Miami quarterback D'Eriq King needs surgery to repair his right shoulder and will miss the remainder of the season, a major blow to the reeling Hurricanes and their hopes of contending in the Atlantic Coast Conference. King was injured in the second half of Miami's loss to Michigan State last month, a game that may end up marking the last appearance of his college career. He left the field after getting hurt, then returned and didn't miss a series but was clearly laboring. The Hurricanes learned t he following day that he likely needed surgery, but both they and King were holding out hope that rehabilitation would give him a chance of playing again this season. That hope is now gone, coach Manny Diaz said Monday. “We're now however many weeks ou t, and I think in D'Eriq's mind we've exhausted that opportunity, that possibility,” Diaz said on his weekly radio show on WQAM-AM. “So, he's going to get the surgery on his shoulder and it's going to be Tyler Van Dyke's team.” King, who was in his sixth college season — taking advantage of a redshirt year at Houston and the NCAA decision to give everyone an extra year of eligibility in response to playing through a pandemic last season — completed 66% of his passes in three games for Miami th is season. He entered the year widely touted as one of the nation's top dual-threat quarterbacks, is the most accurate passer in Miami history and has accounted for 111 college touchdowns, 76 of them passing, 32 more rushing and three receiving. No playe r in college football over the last 20 years has had as many touchdowns in each of those categories. - AP College Football

Miami quarterback D'Eriq King is fully vaccinated, almost fully healed from his torn ACL and meniscus and judging by his words and those around him Wednesday at the 2021 Atlantic Coast Conference Football Kickoff, ready to take that first hit against Ala bama on Sept. 4 in the season opener. Make that 18-point favorite defending champion Alabama. The bigger the bark, the more fun the challenge. "I kind of laugh at it,'' King told three ACC beat writers, when asked during a private interview what he think s of the 18-point spread. But be assured that he's not laughing at Alabama."I like the underdog mentality,'' he said. "My whole life I've been an underdog. So I've taken and run with it. It's just motivation. Obviously, I'm looking forward to ever y single game, but being an 18-point underdog to the defending national champ Week 1, you've got something to look forward to." King, a sixth-year senior who was a Maxwell Trophy semifinalist last season, threw for 2,686 yards with 23 touchdowns and just five interceptions in his 10 1/2 games before the injury. He also rushed for 538 yards and four scores. He completed 64.1 percent of his passes and his 3,224 total yards for the 8-3 Hurricanes ranked 11th in the nation. - Miami Herald

D'Eriq King threw four touchdown passes and No. 13 Miami beat Pittsburgh 31-19 on Saturday. Will Mallory caught two of King's scoring passes as the Hurricanes (4-1, 3-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) bounced back from a 42-17 loss at top-ranked Clemson last week. The Panthers (3-3, 2-3) lost their third straight and were without senior quarterback Kenny Pickett, who suffered an ankle injury against Boston College last week. Pickett leads the nation with 1,389 passing yards but didn't travel with the team to South Florida. Redshirt freshman Joey Yellen replaced Pickett, completing 22 of 46 passes for 277 yards and a touchdown.Alex Kessman kicked four field goals for the Panthers and became Pitt's all-time leader with 57. Kessman surpassed Chris Blewi tt, who had 55 field goals from 2013-16. Pitt rallied from a 21-6 deficit with 10 unanswered points on Kessman's record-setting third field goal and Yellen's 1-yard touchdown pass to Daniel Moraga early in the third quarter. Marcus Williams' 38-yard inte rception return to the Miami 1 set up Moraga's score. But Miami regained its double-digit advantage on King's 45-yard touchdown pass to Mallory. - Miami/AP College Football

Against Clemson, UM's D'Eriq King completed just 2 of 9 passes that were thrown at least 20 yards, with two interceptions. He's now 7 of 29 on those 20-plus-yard passes this season, and that must change significantly for NFL teams to have any interest in him as a quarterback. At this point, King might go undrafted, but it's unclear if he would consider returning for another season at UM - which is permitted because of the NCAA's COVID-19 rules. It's also unclear if he would consider switching positions as a pro, something broached by Senior Bowl executive director Jim Nagy. - Miami Herald

Clemson is once again led by a player who has been described as a generational talent in Trevor Lawrence, while the Tigers defense will have to deal with a dual-threat star in Miami's D'Eriq King. King, who is passing for 245 yards per game and rushing f or 52 yards per game, has generated some Heisman buzz with his outstanding play over the first three weeks of the season. King currently has the third-best Heisman odds at 6-1, behind only Lawrence and Florida's Kyle Trask. Swinney believes it's easy to see why King is receiving so much attention nationally. "It's always a challenge to stop gifted, athletic quarterbacks," Swinney said. "When (King) takes off he's a running back, and that's the mindset he has. You better have your big boy pads on. He wan ts to throw it first. He's a very good thrower. He can throw the ball on the run. He can push the ball down the field. There's really nothing he can't do."While there are some similarities between King and Jackson, there are also some differences. For one, King has accounted for seven touchdowns through three games. Jackson had 51 in 13 games in 2016, for an average of nearly four per game. "(King's) fast, but he's not Lamar Jackson fast. Lamar Jackson was probably the fastest guy on the field, e ither team," Swinney said. "But (King's) a very dangerous player. But they're different in some regards. But the similarities are they've got good people around them. They're well-coached, good schemes. And they challenge you because they can beat you wi th their mind, they can beat you with their arms, they can beat you with their legs. That's a three-phase quarterback." - The State

The Miami Hurricanes didn't even have to play this past weekend to rise in the polls. Miami rose one spot to No. 7 in the AP Top 25 Poll and Amway Coaches Poll to make that top-10 matchup Saturday at the No. 1 Clemson Tigers (7:30 p.m., ABC) even juicier . This will be the highest ranked Hurricanes team (3-0, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) to face a No. 1 opponent since the Canes faced none other than Clemson (3-0, 2-0) on Dec. 2, 2017 in the ACC Championship Game. The Tigers squashed the then-No 7 Canes 38-3 in that game. Late Saturday, ESPN's popular College GameDay announced it will be on site for the UM-Clemson game. It is the second consecutive game for Miami at which College GameDay has set up shop. GameDay came to Hard Rock Stadium on Sept. 26 fo r Miami's 52-10 victory over Florida State. This season, the Canes have victories over Alabama-Birmingham (3-1), then-No. 18 Louisville (1-2, 0-2) and FSU (1-2, 0-2). - Miami Herald

Because of D'Eriq King's size (5-9), scouts want to see exceptional accuracy from UM's quarterback. Without that, he will remain a fringe NFL prospect, according to two scouts. And that's why it would be helpful if King improves his deep passing game. He made a terrific throw to Dee Wiggins for a touchdown Saturday, but for the season, he's just 5 for 20 on passes thrown at least 20 yards in the air, with two touchdowns. But here's the good news, which NFL people should not overlook: No quarterback in F BS has thrown as many passes (94) without an interception … Overall, King is 22nd in the country in passing efficiency...His 66.7 percent completion percentage (63 for 94) is 20th in the country and better than his 63.5 in his great year for Houston in 2018 and enormously better than his 52.7 in four games last season. - Miami Herald

King has heard it for years: He's "too small" to play quarterback in the NFL. He told the Herald he stands just under 5-10 - "The last time I got measured I was 5-9 7/8 during summer workouts," he said. "But if you produce on the field then nothing else should matter. "I've been playing with 6-5, 6-6 linemen since high school. I've never had an issue seeing on the field. My daddy always told me, 'If you're 5-9, 5-10, you've got to do things 10 times better than a guy who is 6-3, 6-4, to even get the sam e shot.' "I've never seen a lineman 6-6, 6-7 play [standing] straight up. They bend. I find my lanes just fine." - Miami Herald

The speedy, agile King, who said he hadn't yet been timed at UM but was previously timed in the "low to mid 4.4s" in the 40-yard dash, also was a receiver and kickoff return specialist during his early Houston career. As a freshman in 2016, despite being a lifelong quarterback, he mostly played receiver, finishing with 29 catches for 228 yards and a touchdown. He became the first Houston player to throw a touchdown, catch a touchdown pass and return a kickoff for a touchdown in the same game (Texas Stat e). As a sophomore in 2017, King ran for a team-best eight touchdowns and started the final four games at quarterback (with three starts at receiver), leading the Cougars with 1,260 passing yards and seven passing touchdowns. He finished third on the tea m with 29 catches for 264 yards and two touchdowns.Last year, after Houston started 1-3 under coach Dana Holgorsen, it was announced that King would play only four games and thus retain his eligibility for another season. Houston finished 4-8, and in what turned out to be King's final game there against Tulane, he set the NCAA's Football Bowl Subdivision record for consecutive games (15) with a passing or rushing touchdown, breaking former Florida quarterback Tim Tebow's record. - Miami Herald

New starting quarterback D'Eriq King, a graduate transfer from Houston and one of the most prolific playmakers in the nation, played like a winner in his first game action with the Hurricanes. UM reported that King completed 15 of 26 passes for 178 yards and four touchdowns. "He's had a great camp so far and had a great night last night,''Diaz told WQAM. "I mean four touchdown passes. And on a couple of those, I'm talking about outstanding coverage, [he] made some really, really good throws."Diaz stressed that the defense was not allowed to tackle King, who nonetheless is also one of the best escape artists in the nation. "The guy is hard to tag. We're still playing tag on him. He's hard enough just to put a hand on, let alone when we have to br ing him to the ground. "What we've been talking about is someone that the entire offense trusts and can rally around, and he's given us that. It was fun to watch him go out there and perform in a setting where you gotta move the ball and make things happ en." - Miami Herald

The University of Miami has a new starting quarterback - though the whole world knew who it would be. Graduate transfer D'Eriq King will take the reins in 2020 for the Hurricanes' new no-huddle, spread offense, if and when the season ever materializes du ring the COVID-19 pandemic. UM released the news Monday. "D'Eriq's hard work both on and off the field has earned him the starting quarterback position," coach Manny Diaz said of the quick, elusive starter, who greatly impressed coaches and teammates dur ing only four days of spring football practice. "His leadership qualities have been evident since he arrived on campus, continuing through mat drills, spring practice, our virtual meetings and summer activities. We're excited to see him lead this offense and I know his teammates are excited as well." - Miami Herald

Miami Hurricanes redshirt senior D'Eriq King is one of 30 quarterbacks named to the watch list for the Davey O'Brien Award - presented annually to the nation's best college quarterback. King transferred to UM from Houston this offseason for his final yea r of eligibility. With the Cougars, King accounted for 78 total touchdowns - 50 passing and 28 rushing - 4,295 passing yards and 1,421 rushing yards in 22 starts. He did most of his damage in 2018 as a junior, when he set the American Athletic Conference (AAC) record for "touchdowns responsible for" with 50. That year, he was a semifinalist for the Maxwell Award and Earl Campbell Award. King maintained his eligibility for a fifth season after only playing in four games in 2019. Miami's two previous Heis man Trophy winners are the only two Hurricanes to win the O'Brien Award: Vinny Testaverde (1986) and Gino Torretta (1992). - Sun Sentinel

Miami Hurricanes football coach Manny Diaz apparently didn't have to hard-sell his previously underachieving program to heralded Houston quarterback transfer D'Eriq King, the coach indicated Thursday in a radio interview four days before the team begins formal strength and conditioning training on campus. "D'Eriq King could have gone to a lot of great schools,'' Diaz told WQAM. "We told him, 'Come watch our guys work out. Come watch our wide receivers go through a lifting session. Come see how hungry ou r guys are.' "You've got a football team that at a couple positions you just need a little better leadership than we've had, a little bit better in terms of a guy that the team can trust - and not just the quarterback, across the board. And these guys st art to see this and they're like 'You know what, I get it. I get that I can push this thing over the edge."King, one of the most prolific players in college football, announced his transfer to UM (6-7 in 2019) in late January after his campus visi t, in time to enroll and participate in the four spring practices before school came to a halt because of the coronavirus pandemic. He has been back on campus informally throwing to his receivers at Greentree Field, which Diaz told the Miami Herald last week opened to players on June 2. - Miami Herald

The Miami Hurricanes intend to play a full college football season this fall and are planning to start bringing players back to campus on a voluntary basis in June, with full-squad workouts by July, according to a UM source briefed on the situation. And even though UM president Julio Frenk said last week that fans "probably" will not be at Hurricanes games this season because of the coronavirus pandemic, Frenk was less adamant about that in his most recent public comments, and UM officials remain hopefu l that at least some fans will be able to attend. The UM source cautioned that dates are not yet set for the return of student athletes to campus - and players hadn't been informed of those intentions as of the weekend - but the plan is to start br inging them back in June for some activities that likely will include a strength and conditioning component. UM athletic director Blake James told The Miami Herald that the Canes expect to play their full schedule this fall and have not discussed postpon ing or canceling non-conference games (Temple, UAB, Wagner and Michigan State). - Miami Herald

King said he's not concerned with matching his 50-touchdown season for Houston in 2018. "I just want to win," King said. "I know for a guy like me, there is nothing more important than winning. I can do the 50 touchdown thing or whatever, but if we don't win, especially at The U, it doesn't mean anything." King, who hopes to play in the NFL and wants to be a college coach eventually, said: "When you're 5-9, you have to prove you can play quarterback. I had to do everything this much better. Even at Hous ton I knew I was playing well, but I was in the moment. If I would have done that and I was 6-3, I'd be declaring" for the NFL Draft. - Miami Herald

King, from Manvel, Texas, set the American Athletic Conference touchdowns-responsible-for-in-a-season record in 2018 with 50 - 36 passing and 14 rushing. And that was done despite missing his last two-and-a-half games with a right-knee injury. He was 219 of 345 (63 percent) for 2,982 yards and his 36 passing touchdowns, with six interceptions. He also had 111 carries for 674 yards, a 6.1-yards-per-carry average. Additionally, in 2019 during Houston's game at Tulane, King set the FBS record for consecuti ve games (15) with a passing and rushing touchdown, breaking former Florida quarterback Tim Tebow's record."So far, D'Eriq has been everything we thought he would be,'' Lashlee said. "He's just a great person. He's a leader. His teammates love him . He comes out and he just works hard. He has a passion for winning for his teammates and for wanting to be as good as he can be. One of the things that he gives us is he gives us great experience and so that can only help him when he's out there competi ng for the job." All bodes well for King, who, barring something very bizarre, is expected to win the quarterback job. - Miami Herald

UM so far has been thoroughly impressed by everything with quarterback D'Eriq King, including - as expected - high marks for leadership, arm strength and mobility. "He's going to bring a different dimension," said one person who watched him closely last week. "He can make all the throws, but you say that about a lot of quarterbacks. His ability to escape pressure will help all of their offensive line issues. Very smooth runner."Beyond throwing a nice deep ball, King is adept at the type of quick throws that new coordinator Rhett Lashlee wants in this spread offense, particularly the intermediate throws that demand anticipating where a receiver is going to be, not where he is when the ball is thrown. And don't discount the leadership, which was l acking at the position last season. Throughout last week, King stayed after practice to work with receivers. He ran sprints and worked on throwing drills. There was no rush to get off the field. - Miami Herald

Former Houston quarterback D'Eriq King announced Monday that he is transferring to Miami, a significant get for the Hurricanes as they try to bounce back from a 6-7 season. King played in four games for Houston this past season before announcing in late September that he would take the rest of 2019 off and redshirt to preserve eligibility for 2020. "Story is still being written..." King wrote in a tweet announcing the move.King had at least one rushing touchdown and at least one passing touchdown in each of his last 15 games with Houston - a streak that broke the FBS record held by former Florida quarterback Tim Tebow. For comparison's sake, Miami quarterbacks have had 15 such games in the last nine seasons combined. King announced a week ago th at he was transferring and visited Miami over the weekend. The Hurricanes struggled with consistency at the quarterback spot for much of the year. King's best season at Houston was in 2018, when he threw for 36 touchdowns and rushed for 14 more. He left the Cougars with 4,925 passing yards, 1,421 rushing yards and 504 receiving yards. King split time between receiver and quarterback in 2016 and 2017, making 58 catches for three touchdowns. - AP College Football

D'Eriq King says he is staying at the University of Houston. The quarterback is denying reports that he intends to transfer after redshirting the remainder of the 2019 season. "That was never a thought," King said Tuesday. "I never thought about leaving, never thought about transferring. To be honest with you, I didn't think about redshirting or doing any of this until everything was on the table. "I'm staying here, I'm here. If I wanted to leave Houston and go somewhere else I could've. I think just me being here is what I want to do and it's the best opportunity for me."Houston lost 38-31 to Tulane on Thursday night, and King met with Cougars coach Dana Holgorsen on Friday morning. The first 30 minutes of the meeting were about the loss to the Green Wave. After that, Holgorsen said options were discussed. One of the options was King redshirting for the remainder of the 2019 season to save a year of eligibility. "I think it's pretty cool that these guys want to continue their college experienc e at the University of Houston," Holgorsen said, referring to King and wide receiver Keith Corbin. "They don't want it to be over in a couple of months. They have the right to get another year, so I respect that. Not only do I respect that decision, I su pport that decision." - AP College Football

Houston quarterback D'Eriq King says he won't play the rest of this season, instead taking a redshirt year, with the intention to return to the Cougars in 2020. Receiver Keith Corbin made a similar announcement Monday. The school released statements from both players. King and Corbin, both seniors, are taking advantage of an NCAA rule implemented last year that allows players to participate in four games and still redshirt, preserving a year of eligibility. Both could end up transferring, as other playe rs have done after using the four-game redshirt. But for now they said they plan to play for Houston next season."I came here to play football for the University of Houston and that is not changing," King said. "After carefully thinking through th is process with my family and Coach (Dana) Holgorsen, I have decided the opportunity to redshirt this season gives me the best chance to develop as a player, earn my degree and set me up for the best success in the future. I'm looking forward to being a part of the success of this program going forward." The new redshirt rule led several players to leave their teams during the season last year. Most notably, current Missouri quarterback Kelly Bryant left Clemson after losing the starting job to Trevor L awrence after four games. Bryant made it clear from the start he planned to transfer as a graduate student, which meant he would be immediately eligible at his new school. - AP College Football
