Austin Kendall threw for a touchdowns and rushed for another, Greg Garner scored three times and Louisiana Tech edged Southeastern Louisiana 45-42 on Saturday night. However, it took a fumble recovery by Cedric Woods in the final minute to secure the win . Southeast Louisiana quarterback Cole Kelley ran for 16 yards on third-and-10 from his 19 but was stripped by Ezekiel Barnett, although the first down would have been nullified by a penalty.Garner had back-to-back touchdowns in the third quarter to give the Bulldogs (1-1) 10-point leads in the shootout. The first came when Kendall threw a backwards pass to wide receiver Kyle Maxwell, who threw the ball into the end zone, where Garner hauled it in while being hit. Garner got his second rushing to uchdown after the second of Kelley's three TD passes. Kelley was 44 of 59 for 453 yards with two interceptions and scored twice on the ground while leading the Lions (1-1) in rushing with 42 yards. CJ Turner had eight catches for 131 yards. The Lions had 556 total yards but 10 penalties cost them 100 yards and they had three turnovers. Kendall was 20 of 28 for 250 yards. - Louisiana Tech/AP College Football

West Virginia University football is on its way back to campus, and the university announced Friday the process necessary for that to happen. WVU will take a phased approach to bringing football players and staff back to campus for voluntary workouts. Th e first phase is a two-week period, June 8-22 for coaches and staff and June 15-29 for players. Student-athletes have been away from their campuses since the coronavirus pandemic began in March. Coaching staffs were eventually allowed to hold virtual mee tings with their players during the week. The Big 12 announced recently that football players would be permitted to return June 15 for voluntary workouts."Phase 1 is the first step to getting Mountaineer football ready for the 2020 season," WVU At hletic Director Shane Lyons said in a university release. "This two-week phased approach enables us to safely get our football staff and players back to campus and will provide the guidance for the return of other student-athletes starting in July. "I wa nt to thank our medical team and department staff who worked endless hours in putting together a plan that puts the safety of our football student-athletes, staff and University first." - Charleston Gazette-Mail

Austin Kendall threw three touchdown passes to lead West Virginia to a 44-27 victory over North Carolina State on Saturday. Kennedy McKoy helped West Virginia's run game break out of a slump with a pair of scores, and the Mountaineers (2-1) had by far th eir highest offensive production of the season one week after looking lethargic in a 38-7 loss at Missouri. Kendall had first-half TD tosses of 20 and 13 yards. His 25-yard run early in the fourth quarter set up his 9-yard scoring toss to freshman Ali Je nnings for a 38-27 lead. Kendall went 27 of 40 for 272 yards with an interception.West Virginia broke a 21-21 halftime tie with the help of its defense, which had been criticized by the coaching staff for 22 missed tackles a week ago. Austin Kendall loved the outcome but wasn't happy that West Virginia's offense struggled for much of the game against a Championship Subdivision opponent. The Oklahoma graduate transfer threw two second-half touchdown passes in his debut for the Mountain eers, who needed a comeback to hold off James Madison 20-13 Saturday. "We've got to be better as a team, especially me," Kendall said. "We've got to be better on offense."Kendall couldn't generate a ton of yards under constant pressure but did jus t enough to give Neal Brown a victory in his first game as West Virginia's coach while preventing the Mountaineers from losing to an FCS opponent for the first time. West Virginia's strengths entering the season were its depth at running back and on the offensive and defensive lines. All of those units underperformed as James Madison dominated the line of scrimmage for a good portion of the game. The Mountaineers averaged just 1.4 yards per rush, leaving it up to Kendall to bail them out. He did - barel y. - AP College Football
