Brandon Johnson, Central Florida, Player News

Growing up in South Florida, UCF wideout Brandon Johnson gravitated toward superstar NFL receivers like Calvin Johnson or Andre Johnson for inspiration on the football field. Another player he idolized was closer to home: Chad 'Ochocinco' Johnson, who ha ppens to be his cousin. "He's a great receiver to look up to," Johnson said of his six-time Pro Bowler family member. Johnson is in his first season with the Knights, arriving as a graduate transfer from Tennessee in December. The former 3-star Fort Laud erdale prospect spent five seasons with the Volunteers, bringing some much-needed experience to the UCF receivers group. "I came here for the storied wide receiver tradition," said Johnson, who has 969 career yards. "Some great wide receivers have come f rom here before I came here, so I just want to come and try to live up to that legacy."UCF has seen a dozen players selected in the NFL draft including Gabe Davis (2019), Tre'Quan Smith (2018), Breshad Perriman (2015), Mike Sims-Walker (2007) and Brandon Marshall (2006). The program has also produced a 1,000-yard receiver in three of the past four seasons including Marlon Williams (1,039 yards) last season. But the departures of Williams, Tre Nixon and Jacob Harris have left the receivers group l acking practical experience. - Orlando Sentinel

Former Tennessee wide receiver Brandon Johnson is set to finish his career in his home state. Central Florida announced on Wednesday the commitment of Johnson as a graduate transfer. He had entered the NCAA transfer portal in December and did not play in Tennessee's regular-season finale. Johnson will have one season of eligibility remaining. Johnson, the son of former major league catcher Charles Johnson, made 19 catches for 231 yards in 2020, and he finished his Tennessee career with 79 catches for 96 9 yards and a touchdown. His 37 catches in 2017 tied for the team lead. He played in 46 games at Tennessee. - Knoxville News Sentinel

Brandon Johnson did a lousy job of easing back into his Tennessee football career. The fifth-year senior hauled in three catches for 73 yards and arguably produced the two most impactful plays during Saturday night's 31-27 opening victory at South Caroli na. Johnson's 30-yard reception during the first quarter ignited the Volunteers, who were already down 7-0 after South Carolina's opening 11-play, 75-yard touchdown march, while his 33-yard catch in the fourth quarter stymied momentum for the Gamecocks, who had turned a 21-7 deficit into a 24-24 tie with 10 minutes remaining."It feels great knowing I can help my team, and that's really what it's all about," Johnson said Tuesday afternoon on a Zoom call. "I want to help my team win - no more, no l ess - and it's the reason why I'm still here." Johnson made the decision last year to redshirt after four games to protect a year of eligibility, which is a rule the NCAA implemented before the 2018 season. Marquez Callaway and Jauan Jennings had become the primary targets for Jarrett Guarantano, so the 6-foot-2, 203-pounder from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, elected to shelve his season having made just two catches for 31 yards. - Chattanooga Times Free Press
