TJ Hammonds' decision to return for another run at his senior season provided a lift to this position group. He produced in the last three games after Rakeem Boyd opted out, particularly in the slot, but also in the run game. The coaching staff was high on true freshman big-back Dominique Johnson, a 6-1, 240-pounder, but he did not have a carry. In fact, outside of top backs Smith (134 carries, 710 yards, 5 TD), Boyd (82-309, 3) and Hammonds (14-101), there were only 4 other carries for running backs, a nd all went to A'Montae Spivey, who has transferred out. Smith proved durable for a 5-9, 185-pounder, and he'll enter 2021 as one of the top returning backs in the SEC. - Northwest Arkansas Times

Arkansas' offense has enjoyed a late-season resurgence from running back T.J. Hammonds. Following what many viewed as a breakout sophomore season from the Little Rock native in 2017, Hammonds' in-game impact has since come in small doses, and not always been beneficial for the Razorbacks. That has not been the case against LSU and Missouri. "He's been showing up these past few weeks and we appreciate that," offensive lineman Myron Cunningham said Tuesday. "He works hard throughout the week and it shows come game time."During Arkansas' loss at Missouri, Hammonds put together his best rushing performance in more than three years, finishing with 52 yards on six carries - an average of 8.7 yards per touch. It was his most rushing yards in a game sin ce he totaled 119 and a touchdown on seven carries against Coastal Carolina in 2017. Hammonds appears to have made the most of his chances in the absence of running back Rakeem Boyd, who missed the LSU game on Nov. 21 due to being in quarantine then opte d out of the final two games of the season. Trelon Smith, who backed up Boyd much of the season, has taken a starting role since his departure. But Arkansas has made an effort to get Hammonds involved both through the air and on the ground. - Northwest A rkansas Times

Arkansas running back T.J. Hammonds has been placed on scholarship, Razorbacks football coach Sam Pittman said Wednesday. On a Zoom call with reporters, Pittman said Hammonds signed scholarship paperwork Tuesday. Hammonds will be a senior in 2020. "We're happy to be able to do that," Pittman said. "The bottom line is he did what we asked him to do in school and he did what we asked him to do in the offseason in the eight-week program when we were here. "He's athletic, and he did what we asked him to do, so, in my opinion, he earned the right to get his scholarship back."A Little Rock native and former standout at Joe T. Robinson, Hammonds played in nine games over the past two seasons. That followed heightened expectations because of a good clos e to his sophomore campaign in 2017 when he rushed for 84 yards at Ole Miss and had 179 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns the following week against Coastal Carolina. In 2018, he participated in four games and did not play after the fifth game. He lat er underwent in-season knee surgery. - Northwest Arkansas Times
