Jarrett Guarantano, Washington State, Player News

Quarterback Jarrett Guarantano, who transferred to WSU out of Tennessee ahead of last season, announced Sunday that he'd signed an undrafted free-agent deal with the Arizona Cardinals. Guarantano came out on top in a four-man QB competition at fall camp last year, but he sustained an injury early in WSU's season opener versus Utah State and backed up Jayden de Laura the rest of the year. Guarantano started in place of the injured de Laura in a 24-13 loss at Utah on Sept. 25. In three appearances as a Cougar, he passed 33 of 49 for one touchdown and three interceptions - all against Utah. Guarantano started 32 games across four seasons with the Volunteers, throwing for 6,174 yards and 38 TDs against 17 interceptions on a 61% completion rate. - Spokesman Review

Washington State's Jarrett Guarantano was named Thursday to the watch list for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, presented annually to the top upperclassman quarterback in college football. The grad transfer from Tennessee landed on the same list last season, when he threw for 1,112 yards and six touchdowns against four picks for the Volunteers, adding four rushing scores in seven games. The New Jersey native was a four-year letter winner with the Volunteers, starting 32 games in that span. Guarantano passed for 6,174 yards and 38 touchdowns on a 61.1% completion rate at Tennessee and was one of just three Vols quarterbacks to throw for over 400 yards in a single game. - Spokesman-Review

None of the four playbooks Guarantano had to master at Tennessee resemble the one he's learning now, but WSU coach Nick Rolovich believes a crash course in the run-and-shoot will be accelerated by Guarantano's experience running a variety of offensive systems. "Very mature kid as far as diving into the offense," Rolovich said. "I think he'd been through a bunch of change offensively in his past, even prior to college. I think he had a real good base of offensive schematics. He's able to translate a lot of the things we do and the things he's done. He doesn't fight it. I think there's parts of this offense that are intriguing to him because it is a little bit different than anything he's ever done."

Guarantano calls the run-and-shoot "a little tricky," but he's established an instant connection with QBs coach Craig Stutzmann - the first coach to reach out when Guarantano was in the transfer portal - and wide receiver Renard Bell commended the graduate transfer on his willingness to ask questions when there's a concept he's not familiar with. "He does a great job of managing his throws and trying to make the right read," Bell said. "If he doesn't, he asks questions." It didn't hurt that two WSU players, running back Max Borghi and center Brian Greene, connected with Guarantano immediately after he announced his commitment to the Cougars, helping the QB feel at ease with his choice. "Just hearing from those guys, those guys are really team captains, team leaders, it kind of helped with the transition a little bit," he said. "This is an older team, too, so there's not too big of an age gap between myself and those guys, but it was very nice to have those guys hit me up instantly as soon as I decided to commit here." - Seattle Times

Jarrett Guarantano is headed to the PAC 12. The former Tennessee football quarterback announced Friday night he is transferring to Washington State. He is the second former Vols quarterback to transfer to the PAC 12, joining J.T. Shrout. Shrout transferred to Colorado. Guarantano entered the transfer portal after Tennessee's loss to Texas A&M on Dec. 19. - Knoxville News Sentinel

Once again, things went south for Tennessee after getting out to an early lead. Auburn closed out Saturday on a 30-7 scoring run after the Vols took a 10-0 lead early in the second quarter. It was the third time in these last five games that Tennessee ended up losing after leading through at least the midpoint of the second quarter. The passing game continues to be the primary issue for the Vols.

Jarrett Guarantano threw for just 156 yards and had a crusher of a pick-six before being pulled during the fourth quarter in favor of freshman Harrison Bailey. The pick-six came late in the third quarter with Tennessee trailing 13-10 and facing a second-and-7 at Auburn's 12-yard line. Instead of a go-ahead touchdown or a game-tying field goal, Guarantano was picked off in the end zone by Tigers safety Smoke Monday, who returned the interception 100 yards for a touchdown. A game-changing play. - Birmingham News

Within a four series stretch during the first half vs. Kentucky, Tennessee quarterbacks produced a lost fumble and three interceptions, including two pick-sixes. Starter Jarrett Guarantano was responsible for three of the turnovers, including pick-sixes on back-to-back drives. It put him at six turnovers over a four quarter stretch dating back to the Vols' Week 3 loss to Georgia and led to Tennessee briefly turning to backup QB J.T. Shrout, who promptly threw an interception of his own on his first pass attempt. It wasn't just Tennessee, though. It was also a tough week for quarterbacks from Auburn, Ole Miss and Georgia. Auburn's Bo Nix was just 24 of 47 with three interceptions during a loss to South Carolina. Ole Miss' Matt Corral, who had thrown for 320 yards or more and only one interception through his first three games, had six interceptions vs. Arkansas and only threw for 200 yards. - Birmingham News

Guarantano was benched after two picks and J.T. Shrout was intercepted on his first attempt by Tyrell Ajian. That pick was turned into a field goal and a 17-0 lead. Guarantano's performance off the bench in last year's 17-13 win at Kentucky fueled his resurgence. That carried him through the final three games of last season and the start of this season. But it's apparent that Tennessee again has a questions at quarterback. Tennessee will entertain No. 2 Alabama next Saturday. - AP College Football

Fifth-year senior quarterback Jarrett Guarantano has taken every snap this season and ranks ninth in the SEC in quarterback efficiency. Guarantano excelled during the first half of Saturday's 44-21 loss to Georgia before losing two fumbles and throwing an interception in the second half. While Pruitt was not pleased with the turnovers, he said that Guarantano "is our quarterback" and "gives us the best opportunity to have success." - Knoxville News Sentinel

Quarterback Jarrett Guarantano is back for another season and will make his third appearance against Missouri. If he can duplicate last year's success, the Tigers will be in trouble. Guarantano shredded Barry Odom's defense last fall in Columbia, throwing for 415 yards, the fourth-most passing yards by a Tennessee quarterback in team history, in a 24-20 victory. The redshirt senior ranks sixth in UT history for career completion percentage (60.9) and eighth in passing yards (5,321). In last week's win at South Carolina, Guarantano completed 19 of 31 passes for 259 yards and a touchdown. - Post-Dispatch

Jarrett Guarantano threw a tie-breaking touchdown to Josh Palmer with 9:35 left and No. 16 Tennessee won its seventh straight game with a 31-27 victory at South Carolina on Saturday night. The Vols appeared to have things in hand when they went ahead 21-7 on Eric Gray's 12-yard scoring run on their opening drive of the third quarter. But South Carolina rallied behind first-time starter quarterback Collin Hill with two touchdowns and a field goal the next four series to tie the Southeastern Conference opener for both teams at 24-all in the fourth quarter. That's when Guarantano, the fifth-year senior, struck with back-to-back big plays for the deciding score.

Guarantano was heavily pressured when he got the ball to an all-alone Brandon Johnson for 33 yards inside South Carolina territory. The next play, Guarantano threw a picture perfect pass to Palmer for a 32-yard touchdown. South Carolina looked like it had a final chance when it forced a Tennessee punt with 90 seconds left. But the punt touched the Gamecocks' Cam Smith after it hit the ground, Tennessee's Jimmy Holiday recovered and the Vols ran out the clock for the win. Guarantano finished 19 of 31 for 259 yards. He also rushed for Tennessee's first touchdown. - Tennessee/AP College Football

Tennessee's quarterback race starts with Guarantano, a fact offensive coordinator Jim Chaney emphasized last week and Weinke echoed Wednesday. The 6-foot-4, 230-pounder from Lodi, New Jersey, had a rocky first half of last season but helped stabilize the Vols as they won their final six games to cap an 8-5 record. Guarantano enters this season with 34 career appearances and 25 career starts, having completed 391 of 642 passes (61.0%) for 5,062 yards with 32 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. His 2.02% career interception rate is the lowest in program history, and program history includes Peyton Manning.

"There is no doubt you see the confidence in Jarrett," Weinke said. "He had the opportunity to spend this offseason studying the offense and watching a lot of film. During this whole pandemic, and I've talked to him every single day, there wasn't a day when he wasn't doing something that would help get him better, whether he was working out or throwing. He came in here about 228 pounds and looked great, and we're trying to keep all that weight on him. "You see a different level of confidence in him because he has a better understanding of what exactly we're trying to get accomplished on every single play." Weinke added that Guarantano "becoming a functional thinker" and his anticipation are the biggest jumps he has performed in the past year. - Chattanooga Times Free Press

Tennessee quarterback Jarrett Guarantano has endured insults and injury during a topsy-turvy junior season. He persevered, and on Saturday night he threw for 415 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Volunteers to a 24-20 victory over Missouri. With its fourth straight win, Tennessee (6-5, 4-3 Southeastern Conference) is bowl eligible for the first time since 2016. Missouri (5-6, 2-5) has lost its last five. After coming off the bench the previous six games, Guarantano started the game and completed 23 of 40 passes. "When you play against these guys, the different looks they give you, you're going to have to check at the line of scrimmage, and he absolutely gives us the best chance to do that," Tennessee coach Jeremy Pruitt said. "And, hey, we've got confidence in him. He's got everything you need to be a good quarterback, and tonight was far and away his best game."

Tennessee had three players with more than 100 receiving yards, a program first. Josh Palmer had six receptions for 124 yards. Jauan Jennings added five catches for 115 yards and a touchdown, and Marquez Callaway had six catches for 110 yards and a touchdown. Missouri's Kelly Bryant completed 16 of 28 passes for 166 yards and a touchdown. Running back Tyler Badie had two touchdown catches, including one from wide receiver Micah Wilson on a trick play. "They battled, they competed, they fought, and we came up short," Missouri coach Barry Odom said. "And I hate it that it resulted in a loss." - Tennessee/AP College Football

Jarrett Guarantano has endured his share of setbacks, which has helped him appreciate the comeback that has Tennessee on the brink of postseason eligibility. Guarantano threw two third-quarter touchdown passes for the lead that the Volunteers' defense preserved with a late goal-line stand as Tennessee rallied past Kentucky 17-13 on Saturday night. Trailing 13-3 at halftime, the Volunteers (5-5, 3-3 Southeastern Conference) replaced Brian Maurer with Guarantano at quarterback to start the third and quickly got two TD drives totaling just 6 1/2 minutes. Receivers had little room for error on both scores, with the second requiring a second look.

Officials initially ruled Josh Palmer out of bounds on his 12-yard catch from Guarantano before replay review showed he got a foot down inbounds on the right sideline on the go-ahead score. His TD followed Marquez Callaway's fine 17-yard TD grab that capped a 75-yard drive covering just 2:57. "Some of the throws were there and we made a change and obviously we were better there," Tennessee coach Jeremy Pruitt said. "We didn't change any calls. We executed better." That says a lot about the growth of Guarantano, a junior who made 22 starts for Tennessee before being benched earlier this season for Maurer. He took heat for a fumble in a loss against Alabama. He broke a bone in his left (non-throwing) hand in a win over South Carolina. Guarantano had no turnovers or injuries this time, just pinpoint accuracy that the Vols needed. Teammates surrounded him at game's end. - Tennessee/AP College Football

Tennessee's Jarrett Guarantano could sense the approaching pass rush just as the quarterback released the pass on the play that knocked him out of the game and put his team ahead for good. If nothing else, Guarantano certainly has proved the last month he knows how to take a hit. Guarantano bounced back from a miserable week and threw two touchdown passes as Tennessee withstood the absence of injured starting quarterback Brian Maurer in a 41-21 victory over South Carolina on Saturday. "I was just very happy with these guys," Guarantano said. "I love seeing the smiles on their faces when they win. That's really the most important thing to me right now." Tennessee (3-5, 2/3 SEC) outscored South Carolina 24-0 in the second half to end a three-game skid in this annual series. The Volunteers threw for a season-high 351 yards as Guarantano and redshirt freshman J.T. Shrout shared the quarterback duties with Maurer unavailable after sustaining concussions each of the last two weeks.

Guarantano broke a bone in his left (non-throwing hand) on his go-ahead touchdown pass midway through the third quarter, and he's expected to undergo surgery on Sunday. Guarantano had been roasted around town and on social media after his fourth-and-goal fumble in a 35-13 loss to No. 1 Alabama last week was returned 100 yards for a game-clinching touchdown. He already had endured a difficult season even before that turnover. After making 22 career starts, Guarantano was benched in favor of Maurer earlier this month. "I've been really happy," Guarantano said after the game with tongue firmly in cheek. "Everything's been going pretty smooth." - Tennessee/AP College Football

Tennessee coach Jeremy Pruitt isn't saying which of his quarterbacks will earn the start Saturday when the Volunteers host No. 3 Georgia. Pruitt said last week that he was giving equal reps to each of his three scholarship quarterbacks. He offered no update on the quarterback situation Monday. Jarrett Guarantano has started each of Tennessee's first four games, but the fourth-year junior was benched to start the second half of a 34-3 loss to No. 10 Florida on Sept. 14. "We're not going to give Georgia a scouting report of what we're going to do this week," Pruitt said. "We're going to rep the guys we feel like give us the best opportunity to have success."

Pruitt had said throughout the preseason that Guarantano was clearly the best quarterback on Tennessee's roster. Pruitt continued making those comments through the first few weeks of the season. But after Guarantano threw two interceptions and missed a wide-open Dominick Wood-Anderson to thwart a potential huge gain against Florida, Pruitt had true freshman Brian Maurer take over for the first three series of the second half. Guarantano did return later in the game. Pruitt said last week that "there's no secret, we have to get better production at that position, just like we do for all of them." - AP College Football

Jarrett Guarantano threw three touchdown passes and Tennessee rolled to a 45-0 blowout of Football Championship Subdivision program Chattanooga as the Volunteers began digging their way out of their slowest start in over three decades. Tennessee (1-2) is trying to bounce back from its first 0-2 start since 1988, when the Vols dropped their first six games before finishing 5-6. The lopsided victory over Chattanooga (1-2) provides Tennessee a momentum boost before the Vols open Southeastern Conference play next week to begin a grueling monthlong stretch.

In its next four games, Tennessee visits No. 9 Florida, hosts No. 3 Georgia and Mississippi State and visits No. 2 Alabama. The Vols do get a week off between the Florida and Georgia games. Chattanooga coach Rusty Wright spent the last two seasons working as an assistant on Shawn Elliott's staff at Georgia State, which stunned Tennessee 38-30 as a 26-point underdog two weeks ago. But Wright's current team couldn't come close to producing a similar stunner. Tennessee instead forced five turnovers and took the suspense out of this one early. The Vols capitalized on Chattanooga's mistakes to grab a 21-0 lead in the game's first 6 1/2 minutes. - Tennessee Football

Tennessee's back-to-back losing seasons have done nothing to limit quarterback Jarrett Guarantano's ambition. "I literally went into the offseason and said I want to be the best in the country," Guarantano said Sunday. "I want to do things that I haven't done yet. I just want to be the best. Going into this season, I want to win a lot of games and I want the team to know that I'm the best in the country. That's really about it." Guarantano's bid to become the best has involved studying guys who currently hold that title. He watched NFL quarterbacks such as Deshaun Watson, Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees and also analyzed some of the college quarterbacks who have enjoyed much more success than him thus far.

2019 PRESEASON MAXWELL AWARD CANDIDATE: QB Jarrett Guarantano, Tennessee,...Guarantano started all 12 games at quarterback in 2018, passing for 1,907 yards and 12 touchdowns with just three interceptions. The Lodi, N.J., native broke the school record for consecutive passes without an interception (166). He was named SEC Player of the Week and National Player of the Week by several organizations following his 328-yard, two-touchdown performance in UT's 30-24 upset at No. 21 Auburn.

Guarantano was recently called an "under-the-radar" player for 2019 by ESPN after he was one of the nation's top signal-callers in the face of a pass rush in 2018. He completed 57 percent of his passes at nine yards per attempt when under pressure according to ESPN. - Tennessee Football
