UCF received the remaining two first place votes. Memphis defeated UCF last season 50-49 in one of their biggest wins of the season and also defeated Houston 30-27 for their fifth consecutive win over the Cougars. The poll was released during the confere nce's media day. The Tigers were picked to finish third in the AAC in last season's poll and they did, going 5-3 in conference play to be tied with UCF. This is the lowest that Memphis has been picked in the preseason poll since they were sixth in total votes in 2016. Memphis was picked to win the AAC West for three consecutive years (2017-19) before the conference eliminated divisions in 2020. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

Sean Dykes has been at Memphis so long, it wouldn't be a shock if younger teammates called him "Mr. Dykes" or "Unc." He's caught touchdowns from Riley Ferguson, Brady White and even former All-American running back Darrell Henderson. He's been a part of two of the greatestcomebacks in school history. Now in his sixth season, the tight end can add more memories before looking to chase professional goals. "The NFL will always be there no matter what when you come out," he said in the spring. "I just wante d to take advantage of a great opportunity." He's already the Tigers' all-time leader in receiving yards by a tight end. But can Dykes build on a career-best season (47 catches, 581 yards, seven touchdowns) and finally be the all-AAC caliber player he's hinted at becoming? Why is Dykes important? Dykes is one of the few proven skill position players returning on offense. As the Tigers' second-leading returning receiver, he should be a favorite target for whoever wins the starting quarterback job. However, Dykes has struggled with inconsistent play. Last year, he had two games with over 100 receiving yards and two games with just one catch. It's been a trend since he arrived where he'll have brilliant performances scattered among quiet ones. - Mem phis Commercial Appeal

Dykes finished with seven catches for 142 yards and two touchdowns. Six of his catches came on third down as he was White's security blanket. Dykes had just three catches for nine yards in his last two games. It was a good reminder why the senior tight e nd has been so effective at the beginning of the season. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

Sean Dykes got a text from former teammate Joey Magnifico before Memphis began its season Saturday. It was two words. Let's go. After missing most of last season with a knee injury, Dykes badly wanted to be the player he was in 2018. He got his chance in the Tigers' 37-24 victory against Arkansas State at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. The senior tight end had two touchdowns, a career-high 10 catches and his first 100-yard receiving game since 2017. Dykes also had the Tigers' longest play from scrimmage , a 38-yard catch that set up a field goal It sure seemed Dykes was back."It felt good to be back out there for the first time, it felt like, in two years. It felt like a big relief off my shoulders because I've been being patient," said Dykes, wh o finished with 137 receiving yards. Dykes' second touchdown gave the Tigers a 34-17 lead in third quarter. He was targeted 10 times and did not record a drop. It was what he hoped to do last season alongside Magnifico and prove that his 161 receiving ya rds in the 2017 AAC Championship game wasn't a fluke. But after he played in the first four games of the 2019 season, the Tigers decided to shut him down to heal. Dykes had to watch the best season in school history as a spectator. - Memphis Commercial A ppeal
