The prime culprit for LSU's woes was the defenseless defense. The Tigers ranked last of 127 FBS teams in yards allowed passing, 124th in total defense, 98th in points allowed. It's hard to say Anthony didn't do his part, though. He had 24 tackles in 2020 , third among LSU's defensive linemen. That total included a team-best 5 1/2 sacks. He also had four quarterback hurries (only fellow end Ali Gaye had more with five), numbers that argue Anthony was the Tigers' most disruptive pass rusher. If only more of LSU's defensive players could have played like Anthony did. Instead, the defense generally looked and performed like a disjointed mess. Much of the blame centered on the one-year pit stop that was former defensive coordinator Bo Pelini's second t enure at LSU after a successful turn under Miles from 2005-07. But Anthony said the Tigers' problems started long before they stepped on the field and got thrown into a paper shredder by Mississippi State's passing attack to the tune of a Southeastern Co nference record 623 yards passing. "Last year with COVID and everything, we didn't really have time to actually bond as a team," Anthony said. "Everyone was going in their separate places, we were quarantining. Guys were at their homes, so we never reall y got to be around each other but like a week or two for camp." - Baton Rouge Advocate

LSU's top pass rusher on the defensive line will return for another season. Andre Anthony, LSU's starting defensive end, announced Sunday that he will return for the 2021 season. The 6-foot-3, 255-pound New Orleans native had just finished his senior yea r, but he will use an extra year of eligibility granted by an NCAA waiver due to the coronavirus pandemic. Anthony led the Tigers with 5½ sacks in 2020, and he was also ranked fourth on the team with 5½ tackles for loss. In 10 games, with eight starts, he totaled 24 tackles and had four quarterback hurries and a pass breakup. - Baton Rouge Advocate

Defensive end Justin Thomas has left the LSU football team, coach Ed Orgeron said Tuesday. Thomas, a junior, entered preseason camp as a possible starter in LSU's new 4-3 defense. Orgeron did not say why Thomas left the team. "Justin Thomas will not be w ith us," Orgeron said. "He left the team, and we wish him the best." Without Thomas, Orgeron said former outside linebackers Andre Anthony and Travez Moore are starting at defensive end. LSU has options at the position this season with junior college tra nsfer Ali Gaye, freshman Phillip Webb, freshman BJ Ojulari and junior TK McLendon in the mix for playing time. "At defensive line, we have a lot of depth," Orgeron said. "We can rotate those guys." - Baton Rouge Advocate
