Bailey Zappe capped his record-setting season in style, and Western Kentucky capped a difficult week with a bowl win. Zappe broke a pair of single-season FBS records by passing for 422 yards and six touchdowns, and Western Kentucky handed Appalachian Sta te its first-ever bowl loss by beating the Mountaineers 59-38 in the Boca Raton Bowl on Saturday. Zappe finished the season with 5,967 yards and 62 touchdowns for the Hilltoppers (9-5).He topped the previous FBS marks of 5,833 yards set by Texas T ech's B.J. Symons in 2003 and 60 touchdowns set by LSU's Joe Burrow in the Tigers' run to the national championship in the 2019 season. "In my opinion Bailey Zappe is the best quarterback in college football, and now he gets to say he is one of the best, " Western Kentucky coach Tyson Helton said. "He'll go down in history as being one of the best, and holds two records. It's just special to be a part of that." Jerreth Sterns caught 13 passes for 184 yards and three touchdowns for Western Kentucky, finis hing his season with 150 catches for 1,902 yards. 2021 CONFERENCE USA MOST VALUABLE PLAYER (COACHES): WKU QB Bailey Zappe was selected as the C-USA Most Valuable Player Award after his stellar season in Bowling Green. Zappe, a Manning Award finalist and Walter Camp Player of the Year and Davey O'Brien A ward semifinalist, has had a record-smashing season for the East Division champion Hilltoppers, breaking the Conference USA and program record for touchdown passes (56) in a single-season, and is within range of potentially breaking the single-season FBS records for touchdown passes (60) and passing yardage (5,833).Zappe helped lead WKU to seven-straight wins during the season en route to the 2021 Ryan Conference USA Championship Game, where he threw for 577 yards and four touchdowns. His 577 yar ds passing were the most in a single game by any quarterback in the country this season, and set a new C-USA Championship Game record. Bailey Zappe threw four touchdown passes - all in the second half - and Western Kentucky spotted Marshall 14 points before pulling away for a 53-21 victory on Saturday, laying claim to Conference USA's East Division crown. In a game between the top two t eams in the East, the Hilltoppers (8-4, 7-1) ran off 36 unanswered points to earn the right to face 15th-ranked UTSA in the conference championship game on Dec. 3 in San Antonio. Western Kentucky managed just two field goals by Brayden Narveson and trail ed 14-6 at halftime. Zappe came out firing in the third quarter. He hooked up with Daewood Davis for a 47-yard TD just 1:19 into the third quarter.Zappe followed that with a 14-yard TD toss to Malachi Corley before firing a 50-yard scoring strike to Davis midway through the quarter. Narveson added a 53-yard field goal and WKU led 29-14 heading to the fourth. Zappe's final TD toss was an 8-yarder to Dalvin Smith 52 seconds in. Davion Williams capped the scoring for the Hilltoppers with a 45-yard p ick-6 in the final minute. Zappe completed 25 of 48 passes for 328 yards with no interceptions for WKU. Bailey Zappe passed for 470 yards and six touchdowns as Western Kentucky rolled to a 52-17 victory over Florida Atlantic on Saturday. The Hilltoppers (7-4, 6-1 Conference USA) lead the East Division and travel to play second-place Marshall in the regular -season finale next Saturday. Zappe had a 1-yard TD toss to Jerreth Sterns to open the scoring and connected with Mitchell Tinsley for an 8-yarder as WKU grabbed a 14-3 lead. Zappe hit Joey Beljan for a 3-yard TD before Teja Young picked him off and retu rned it 62 yards for a score — pulling the Owls (5-6, 3-4) within 21-10. NOV 15 CONFERENCE USA OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: WKU QB Bailey Zappe completed 34-42 passes for 482 yards and five touchdowns (compared to only one interception) in his return to Texas on Saturday, as WKU defeated Rice 42-21. Zappe's 482 passing yards were the most of any FBS quarterback last week, and the most by a C-USA quarterback since Zappe himself threw for 523 vs. UTSA on October 9. Zappe had seven completions of 20+ yards and 20 completions of 10+ yards in the win. Zappe was 20-27 for 330 yar ds and three touchdowns in the first half alone, as the Hilltoppers carried a 28-0 lead into the break. NOV 1 CONFERENCE USA OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: WKU QB Bailey Zappe completed 33-of-45 passes (73.3%) for 393 yards, with four passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown in WKU's 45-13 win over Charlotte on Saturday. As the Hilltoppers led 35-13 at the end of the third quarter, Zappe was already 30-40 (75%) for 361 yards, with all five of his total touchdowns. Zappe did throw two interceptions for the first time this season – one of which was a dropped ball by a receiver that popped into the air and was grabbed by the defense. Overall, Zappe is 279-391 (71.4%) for 3,407 yards (FBS-best 425.9 yards per game) with 33 touchdowns (leads FBS), compared to only six interceptions (one every 65.2 attempts). Bailey Zappe passed for 384 yards and three touchdowns and Western Kentucky pulled away in the second half to beat Florida International 34-19 in Conference USA play on Saturday. OCT 4 CONFERENCE USA OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: QB Bailey Zappe completed 46-64 (71.2%) passes for 488 yards, with three touchdowns and zero interceptions at No. 17 Michigan State. It was the third-most passing yards against a Spartans' defense since 2000 (via Sports-Reference.com). Zappe's 488 yards were the fifth-most in WKU history and the most by a C-USA quarterback since ODU's Blake LaRussa had 495 vs. Virginia Tech in 2018. Zappe's 46 completions tied the WKU all-time record set by Brandon Doug hty vs. Bowling Green in 2014 and were the most by a C-USA quarterback since that same performance. SEPT 13 CONFERENCE USA CO-OFFENSIVE OF THE WEEK: A week after throwing for 424 yards against an FCS opponent, Zappe one-upped himself against one of the FBS' best defenses from a year ago. At Army on Saturday, Zappe completed 28-40 passes (70%) for 435 a nd three touchdowns, compared to one interception, while adding a touchdown on the ground as well. Zappe's 435 yards were the most allowed by an Army defense to a single quarterback since at least 2000 (per Sports-Reference.com). Through two full weeks o f the college football season, Zappe has two of the five 400-yard passing games by all FBS quarterbacks. The Houston Baptist transfer leads the nation with 429.5 yards passing per game with 10 touchdowns against two interceptions. His 458-yard average in 2020 led all of co llege football. There will be no competition for the starting quarterback position at Western Kentucky entering fall camp. WKU head coach Tyson Helton announced Tuesday at the team's media day at Houchens-Smith Stadium that Bailey Zappe would be the team's starting quar terback. "I think we're in a position right now where Bailey Zappe is going to be the quarterback," the third-year head coach said. "He's been here long enough - he was with us during the spring, he was with us during the summer, our staff's been able to make evaluations. I think it's better for us moving into this season having that guy in place and he knows he's the guy. I think we can go ahead and say, 'Yeah, he's going to be the starter." Zappe joined the team during the offseason as a transfer from Houston Baptist - the same program new WKU offensive coordinator Zach Kittley comes from.WKU, which opens fall camp Wednesday, also signed receivers Jerreth and Josh Sterns and Ben Ratzlaff from HBU. With the majority of the FCS season getting canceled amid the COVID-19 pandemic, HBU played just four games, but still put up eye-popping numbers on offense. The Huskies averaged 33.7 points per game, with three of those four games coming against FBS opp onents, and averaged 459.5 yards passing per game. Zappe, a 6-foot-2, 215-pound graduate student, completed 141 of 215 passes for 1,833 yards and 15 touchdowns to just one interception. College football's leading passer in 2020 is coming to The Hill. Western Kentucky announced the signing of quarterback Bailey Zappe, a transfer from Houston Baptist, on Sunday. Zappe joins three other recent Huskies-turned-Hilltoppers in offensive coordi nator and quarterbacks coach Zach Kittley, as well as star wide receivers Jerreth Sterns and Josh Sterns.In an abridged 2020 season, the success of HBU's Air Raid passing offense made headlines throughout the country. In only four games, the Victo ria, Texas, native completed 141 of 215 passes (65.6%) for 1,833 yards, with 15 touchdowns and one interception. Bailey Zappe threw for three touchdowns, Houston Baptist blocked a late PAT for a two-point conversion and the Huskies' completed their four-game season with a 33-30 win over Eastern Kentucky on Saturday. EKU rallied from a 21-point halftime deficit to g et within one with just over four minutes remaining after Parker McKinney threw a 27-yard score to Keyion Dixon. But the point-after kick was blocked and Tra Fluellen, who also had an interception, returned it for two points. The Colonels (1-3) got the b all back with 2:22 remaining but McKinney fumbled on a scramble. Zappe, who came in as the Division I passing leader with 1,453 yards and 12 touchdowns, was 35 of 46 for 380 yards. The senior's season is over, though, with the Huskies' finishing with a w in after losing to three FBS schools. HBU has opted out of the Southland Conference spring season. - AP College Football

The Red Raiders hung on to win 35-33, but Bowman was overshadowed by Houston Baptist's Bailey Zappe. HBU features one of the best quarterbacks playing on the Football Championship Subdivision level in Bailey Zappe. The senior was a second-team selection on the HERO Sports Preseason All-America team. Zappe threw for 3,811 yards and 35 touchdowns last sea son. Jerreth Sterns and Ben Ratzlaff are Zappe's favorite targets. Sterns caught 105 passes last season, while Ratzlaff finished with 1,139 receiving yards. That trio will challenge UNT in its first game under new defensive coordinator Clint Bowen. Bailey Zappe threw three touchdown passes and Houston Baptist held off Lamar for a 31-26 victory on Saturday. Zappe was 14-of-27 passing for 251 yards and threw all three scores to Jerreth Sterns, who finished with five catches for 53 yards. Dreshawn Min nieweather added 129 yards rushing and a touchdown for Houston Baptist (5-6, 2-5 Southland Conference). Ben Ratzlaff had 83 yards receiving on five catches, and Alfred King had an interception for the Huskies. Marcellus Johnson ran for 96 yards and two t ouchdowns, and Bailey Giffen kicked four field goals, including a 51-yarder in the first quarter, for the Cardinals (4-7, 2-6). Bailey Zappe threw a school-record seven touchdown passes and Houston Baptist steamrolled Texas Southern 68-31 on Saturday night. Zappe completed 30 of 45 passes for 342 yards and four touchdowns in the first half alone and finished 43-of-59 passing for 498 yards, 15 yards shy of his career high set earlier this season in a 53-52 road victory over South Dakota. Zappe leads all Division I quarterbacks with 19 TD passes this season. Houston Baptist has won three straight games for the first time since bec oming a D-I school in 2014. Dreshawn Minnieweather started the scoring for the Huskies (4-1) with a 22-yard TD run to cap a nine-play, 94-yard game-opening drive. The Tigers took the opening kickoff and drove to the Houston Baptist 6-yard line before Lad arius Owens' fumble was recovered by Tra Fluellen.The Huskies added Zappe's 15-yard TD toss to Jaylon Johnson and Gino Garcia's 30-yard field goal to lead 17-0 after one quarter. Zappe threw TD passes to Jerreth Sterns and Minnieweather to stretch Houston Baptist's lead to 30-0 in the second quarter. Tylor Cook got Texas Southern on the scoreboard with an 8-yard TD run, but Zappe added a 43-yard scoring strike to Ben Ratzlaff for a 37-7 lead. De'Andre Johnson threw two TD passes in the final 5:16 to pull the Tigers within 37-21 at halftime, but they would get no closer. Minnieweather finished with 125 yards and two TDs on 14 carries for the Huskies. Ratzlaff hauled in eight passes for 131 yards and two TDs, while Sterns had 12 catches for 104 ya rds and two scores. Bailey Zappe threw for 257 yards and four scores as Houston Baptist opened Southland Conference play with its third straight win, a 48-21 victory over Northwestern State on Saturday night. With just two wins in 22 starts over the last two seasons, the Hu skies (3-1) have now won three consecutive games for the first time in their six-year history. They were 4-7 in 2016 and opened this season with a 36-34 loss to UTEP. Ean Beek rushed for 131 yards with a score and Dreshawn Minnieweather totaled 112 yards rushing. Ben Ratzlaff caught five balls for 117 yards and two touchdowns. The Huskies intercepted three passes. Brennan Young had two and Patrick Wolfe grabbed the third. HBU sprinted to a 24-0 lead at the break and increased that to 31-0 early in the t hird before Northwestern State got on the board.
