SEPT 6 OVC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Preston Rice, QB, 6-2, 227, R-Jr., Waynesboro, Tenn., Murray State,...Rice rushed for four touchdowns and accounted for 238 yards of total offense as Murray State blanked Mississippi Valley State in its season-ope ner. The redshirt junior completed 10-of-16 passes for 157 yards and carried the ball 11 times for 81 yards, scoring on runs of 28, 1, 5 and 1 yards. His four rushing touchdowns tied the Murray State single-game record, accomplished 10 times previously. The four rushing scores were the most by a FCS player during Week 1. Preston Rice had four touchdown runs to lead Murray State to a 35-0 victory over Mississippi Valley State in the season opener for both teams on Thursday night. Rice broke loose for a 28-yard score on the Racers' third play from scrimmage and later added three TD runs from inside the 5. He finished with 81 yards rushing on 11 carries and was 10-of-16 passing for 157 yards. Cortezz Jones carried the ball 10 times for 107 yards. Quinaz Turner and Davontae McKee each had an interception for the Racers. Mis sissippi Valley State was held to 162 yards of offense and didn't cross midfield in the second half. Preston Rice scored the go-ahead touchdown and Murray State rallied in the fourth quarter to beat Southeast Missouri State 24-21 on Sunday. Rice's 3-yard run returned the lead to the Racers (2-0, 2-0 Ohio Valley Conference) with eight minutes remaining a fter the Redhawks scored twice earlier in the quarter. With Southeast Missouri trailing 17-7, the Redhawks’ Al Young caught a shanked punt a yard behind the line of scrimmage and returned it 10 yards to the Murray State 30. The short field led to a tou chdown plunge by Zion Custis. A minute later, Shabari Davis returned an interception 33 yards for the lead. A celebration penalty following Davis' score resulted in Murray State starting a drive at the Redhawks' 49. The Racers converted a fourth-and-5 on a 12-yard slant to Dequan Dallas down to the 3. Preston Rice threw for one touchdown and ran for another and Murray State beat UT Martin 14-10 in a spring opener Sunday to give Dean Hood his first win as the Racers' new head coach. Hood has returned to the Ohio Valley Conference where he served as hea d coach at Eastern Kentucky for eight years (2008-15). Murray State led 7-3 with six seconds left in the third quarter when the game was delayed for over two hours because of lightning in the area. Preston Rice threw for 271 yards and three touchdown passes to lead Murray State to a 31-17 victory over Tennessee State on Saturday. Jared McCray and Cory Thomas each added 74 yards rushing for Murray State (4-3, 2-1 Ohio Valley Conference). Cameron Ros endahl was 26 of 43 for 312 yards passing for Tennessee State (1-6, 0-3) but threw three interceptions. Te'kendrick Roberson ran for 76 yards and two touchdowns. Roberson's 3-yard TD run pulled the Tigers to 24-17 early in the fourth quarter. McCray brok e loose for a 58-yard touchdown run that capped the scoring with 2:27 remaining. Preston Rice threw for four touchdowns as Murray State stunned Kentucky rival Morehead State 59-7 on Saturday night. Rice had 214 yards passing and led the Racers (2-2) on the ground with 86 rushing yards. He also caught a touchdown pass from running bac k Jared McCray late in the third quarter. LaMartez Brooks had five receptions for 130 yards and two touchdowns. The Racers scored 45 unanswered points, starting with McCray's 7-yard TD run to cap the first drive of the game.Rice threw three touchd owns in the first half, two to Brooks and one to Sylvaughn Turner, and Zaden Webber kicked a 43-yard field goal to give Murray State a 31-0 lead at halftime. Ty Terrell returned the first punt of the second half 67 yards for another Racers score and Rice followed that up - following a Morehead State fumble on first down - with a short pass to Brion Sanchious to make it 45-0 with 12:22 left in the third. The Racers amassed 566 total yards while holding Morehead State to 249. The Eagles (2-2) committed fi ve turnovers, four of which were quickly converted into Murray State points. Preston Rice threw two first-half touchdown passes, Jared McCray and Rodney Castille each ran for two more scores and Quinaz Turner returned a first-quarter kickoff 95 yards for a score as Murray State routed in-state, NAIA-rival Pikeville, 59-20 in a se ason-opener Thursday night. Pikeville took the opening kick and drove 50 yards in eight plays and Zaniel Phillips connected on a 42-yard field goal to put the Bears up, 3-0, but the Racers took the lead for good on the ensuing kickoff.Two minutes later Rice found Brion Sanchious from nine-yards out and Gabriel Vicente kicked a 44-yard field goal in the final seconds of the first quarter to put Murray State up, 17-3. McCray scored from the 3 and Jacob Bell pulled in a 38-yard pass from Rice for a 31-3 lead minutes into the second quarter. Bowen Smith ran in from the 4 and threw a 48-yard strike to Damian Sutton to bring Pikeville back to trail 31-17 at the half. Castille had two short touchdown runs in the second half and McCray added a 25-yard d ash. Murray State threw for 216 yards and rushed for another 249.
