Trey Smith, Wyoming, Player News
|
Trey Smith can't say he ever expected this. After signing with Louisville six years ago out of Madison Central High School in Mississippi, Smith's initial hopes weren't much different than those of many other Division I football players: Three years and then off to the NFL. Even when Smith arrived at the University of Wyoming in 2019 as a graduate transfer, he expected it to be a one-year pit stop before moving on. Funny how life works. Two years later, he's still at UW as a 25-year-old running back emb arking on his seventh collegiate season. He's easily the oldest player on UW's roster, and his teammates rarely pass up an opportunity to remind him of that, though Smith said he's used to the good-natured ribbing at this point. "Everything I hear, I hea r my age brought up in some form or fashion, so I just embrace it and try to disburse all my wisdom to all the young guys," Smith said. "I just look at it from a positive aspect."Smith said it hasn't always been that easy to take things in stride, particularly when it comes to pursuing his ultimate goal of continuing his family's lineage in the NFL. His father, Jimmy Smith, played 13 seasons in the league and was an All-Pro receiver for the Jacksonville Jaguars in the late 1990s. The younger Smit h admitted it was a tough pill to swallow watching younger teammates at Louisville pass him by in a shorter amount of time while he was buried on the depth chart. Following a redshirt year, he got just 82 carries in three seasons with the Cardinals befor e leaving for UW after the 2018 season. "I feel like I was kind of getting left behind for a while," Smith said. "That just made me more motivated." - Casper Star-Tribune

Count Trey Smith among Wyoming's senior football players who will be back for another season. Smith told the Star-Tribune on Thursday he will return for his third season at UW next fall, keeping one of the Mountain West's top rushing duos intact. The Cow boys' running back has rushed for 715 yards and eight touchdowns in 10 games since joining UW's program as a graduate transfer. Smith, who's on track to receive his master's degree from UW next fall, joins defensive end Garrett Crall and receiver Ayden E berhardt as UW seniors who've publicly announced they will be returning for another season. - Casper Star-Tribune

Lee Williams had three short touchdown runs, Trey Smith rushed for a career-high 164 yards with a touchdown and Wyoming rolled up 399 yards on the ground to breeze past winless UNLV 45-14 on Friday night. Xazavian Valladay kicked off the Cowboys rushing attack on the second play of the game, bursting through a gap up the middle and sprinting 78 yards untouched to score. Valladay finished with 94 yards rushing. Smith broke off the biggest game of his five-season career at Wyoming, surpassing 100 yards ea rly in the third quarter and squeezing past a would-be tackler to score on a 28-yard run. Quarterbacks Max Gillam and Doug Brumfield scored keepers for UNLV, late in each half.UNLV was held to 290 yards of offense with six punts, an interception a nd a fumble. The turnovers resulted in 14 Wyoming points. Junior linebacker Chad Muma had three sacks for the Cowboys. Williams passed for 99 yards and rushed for another 43 with three TDs. It was a rare blowout in this series as Wyoming and UNLV have ba ttled through four overtime contests in Las Vegas, including a 69-66 three-OT slugfest in 2016 that remains the highest scoring game in the Mountain West Conference (No. 5 in FBS). - AP College Football

Trey Smith's breakout game included an 80-yard touchdown scamper amid a personal best 152 yards, helping Wyoming hold on for a 21-16 win over Idaho on Saturday, the Cowboys' seventh straight victory dating to last season. It was the first 100-yard game f or Smith, a graduate transfer from Louisville. On his long score, he bounced off linebacker Christian Elliss at the line, shook a would-be ankle tackler a few yards farther downfield, regained his balance, then won a footrace down the right sideline. Smi th, whose previous high was 98 yards last season while playing for Louisville, credited his offensive line."They kept fighting and finishing their blocks and I'm just really proud of them," he said, adding that the crowd spurred him on. "It felt a mazing. To have the fans behind me on that long run - that's a feeling that I'm going to remember forever." Elliss, the Vandals' second-leading tackler with nine, including one for loss, pinned the defeat on himself for not stopping Smith at the line of scrimmage on the decisive score. The TD put Wyoming up 21-13, but Cade Coffey's third field goal, from 24 yards, trimmed the lead to 21-16 with 7:20 to go after Wyoming's Esaias Gandy batted away a third-down pass by Mason Petrino in the end zone. The Co wboys' Solomon Byrd sacked Petrino to stuff the Vandals' next drive, and Smith rushed for a pair of first downs to allow the Cowboys to run out the clock. - AP College Football
