Virginia Tech defensive end Justus Reed's lengthy collegiate career will come to an end this month. The Hokies host Virginia on Saturday at Lane Stadium in their regular season finale and there's a chance the team could get invited to a bowl game, but Re ed has already made up his mind. "This is it," Reed said, with a smile on Tuesday. "This is my last go around. It's been a long time. I thought about it at the beginning of the year a little bit, but this is it. Seven is enough for me." Reed, who signed with Virginia Tech in April as a grad transfer from Youngstown State, had the chance to play in 2021 with the NCAA granting all fall athletes an additional year of eligibility. His career began back in 2014 as a freshman signee out of Central Catholic Hi gh School at Florida. He redshirted that season and missed most of the 2016 season with a knee injury before transferring to the FCS level.He suffered another injury setback in 2018 - a torn achilles forced him to miss the entire season - but he b ounced back 13 sacks and 19 tackles for loss the next year. The NCAA granted him two years of additional eligibility when he applied for a medical waiver before the season. Reed has 26 tackles this season (16 solo) with a team-high 6.5 sacks and seven qu arterback hurries. "I think I've played alright," Reed said. "I got lost a little bit in the middle of the season, but picked it up towards the end. I feel like I've played pretty well for the most part just getting to know the defense more and playing i nstead of thinking of trying to force plays. That's helped me a lot the last half of the season...I'm happy with my decision and really blessed to be here and the opportunity to come here." - Roanoke Times

Virginia Tech landed a commit from Youngstown State defensive Justus Reed on Friday night. Reed, who entered his name into the NCAA transfer portal in February as a grad transfer, tweeted out his decision. Tech has struggled the last two seasons to gener ate a consistent pass rush edge. Emmanuel Belmar led the defensive ends with four sacks last season, and the group combined for 8.5 sacks. The Hokies defensive ends combined for 11 sacks in 2018. Reed had 12.5 sacks all by himself in 2019 along with 42 t ackles (30 solo) and 19 tackles for loss. He was the first Youngstown State player to earn first-team All-Missouri Valley Football Conference honors since 2016.The 6-foot-3, 270-pounder also has the size new co-defensive line coaches Bill Teerlinc k and Darryl Tapp have made a priority. He signed out of high school back in 2014 with Florida. The Clearwater native sat out two of the three seasons he spent in the SEC. He redshirted as a true freshman and missed most of the 2016 with a knee injury. NOV 25 MISSOURI VALLEY DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: DE Justus Reed, Youngstown State, 6-3, 270, Jr., Clearwater, Fla. (Clearwater Central Catholic),...Reed capped off an impressive season with six solo tackles, including a pair of sacks in the Penguins' 21-3 win over Illinois State. Reed finished the game with four tackles for losses against the Redbirds. He also forced a fumble and had a pass breakup. Reed finished the season with 13 sacks in 12 games and 19 TFLs.
