  09/06/20 - QB Josh JacksonrSr/2022, Maryland, 6-1, 218 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Six Maryland players decided to opt out of the fall season last month, including three starters: quarterback Josh Jackson, offensive lineman Johnny Jordan and offensive lineman Austin Fontaine. Defensive lineman Jalen Alexander, defensive back Vincent Flythe and linebacker TJ Kautai also chose to sit out. They made that decision when the Big Ten planned to play a 10-game conference schedule. With the postponement, Maryland players are instead spending the fall on campus and attending noncontact practices, workouts and meetings. Some of these players, Locksley said, were content with ending their football careers. (Before the Big Ten announced its postponement, Locksley said that Jackson, who transferred to Maryland as a graduate student before last season, had "probably played his last football.")

When asked whether these players who opted out would have the ability to opt back in and potentially play in the winter, Locksley said Aug. 13: "The way I see it, whether we were playing a season or not, the guys that opted out chose to opt out [of] the preseason workouts, so that's not an area that I've even thought about just yet. Obviously we'll handle a lot of them on a case-by-case basis." - Washington Post

  08/07/20 - QB Josh JacksonrSr/2022, Maryland, 6-1, 218 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Maryland senior quarterback Josh Jackson has opted out of the upcoming football season, leaving the Terrapins with very little depth and experience at the pivotal position. Jackson is the most prominent of six Maryland players who have decided not to play in 2020 for reasons related to the COVID-19 pandemic, coach Michael Locksley said during a teleconference Friday. Jackson played in 10 games last year for Maryland after transferring from Virginia Tech. He went 98 for 207 for 1,274 yards and 12 touchdowns with six interceptions. His backup was Tyrrell Pigrome, who transferred to Western Kentucky during the offseason. With Jackson out, Locksley is hoping the NCAA will grant a transfer waiver to former Alabama quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa, the younger brother of Tua Tagovailoa, who starred at Alabama and was selected fifth overall by Miami in the 2020 NFL draft. - AP College Football

  09/07/19 - QB Josh JacksonrSr/2022, Maryland, 6-1, 218 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Using a fast-paced offense that's racking up huge chunks of yardage and scoring at an astounding clip, Maryland isn't content merely to blow out the opposition. The objective Saturday was to pound No. 21 Syracuse into submission. "Our goal was to try to make them quit, and I think we did a good job at that," quarterback Josh Jackson said after the Terrapins rolled to a surprisingly lopsided 63-20 victory. Jackson threw for 296 yards and three touchdowns to anchor another prolific offensive performance by Maryland, which scored 42 first-half points and finished with a whopping 650 yards in offense. After beating Howard 79-0 in their first game under coach Michael Locksley, the Terrapins (2-0) came up with an impressive encore against a highly regarded foe.

The 63 points were the most ever by Maryland against a ranked opponent. Although Locksley eased up after a 64-yard touchdown run by Javon Leake early in the third quarter, the Terrapins finished with 29 first downs and 354 yards rushing. Locksley came to Maryland after serving as offensive coordinator at Alabama, and Jackson transferred from Virginia Tech in February. The two have teamed to form a quick-strike offense that is equally effective on the ground and through the air. Jackson completed 21 of 38 passes, attempting only two throws in the fourth quarter. He has tossed seven TD passes in two games with one interception. - AP College Football

  08/31/19 - QB Josh JacksonrSr/2022, Maryland, 6-1, 218 (DS#999 QB) + More +

The game started with coach Michael Locksley and quarterback Josh Jackson unsure what to expect in their Maryland debut. By halftime, Jackson was done for the day and Locksley' biggest concern was trying to keep from running up the score on defenseless Howard. Jackson threw four touchdown passes and the Terrapins rolled to a 79-0 victory Saturday in a record-breaking performance. With Jackson leading the way, Maryland scored 28 points in both the first and second quarters to shatter the school mark for most points scored in one half. The assault continued in the second half, with the only suspense being if the Terrapins would break the school record for points in game - 80 against Washington College in 1927. Maryland's third-stringers had a first and goal at the 4 in the closing minutes but couldn't push the ball in. - AP College Football
