After two straight emotion-packed weekends, Army coach Jeff Monken and his Black Knights had more drama on Monday - but with a happy ending. The Black Knights shut out archrival Navy at Michie Stadium just over a week ago and finished an undefeated eight-game home season on Saturday by beating Air Force to win the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy. But the good feelings from that accomplishment took a big hit Sunday night when Monken had to tell his players their bowl game was canceled. The letdown didn't last long. The Liberty Bowl extended an invitation Monday night and Army is slated to play West Virginia on Dec. 31 in Memphis, Tennessee, filling the spot left by Tennessee's withdrawal because of COVID-19 test results. - AP College Football

Army has accepted a bid to play in the Independence Bowl, becoming the first team in the country to gain a spot in the postseason. West Point announced the bid after the Black Knights beat Mercer on Saturday to improve to 6-1. Army is slated to face a Pac-12 Conference foe in the Shreveport, Louisiana bowl game. The Black Knights are 3-0 in three previous bowl appearances under seventh-year head coach Jeff Monken. "We deeply appreciate the role they play in our national landscape and will roll out the red carpet for them for their trip to Shreveport," Independence Bowl Chairman Frank Auer said in a statement. The Pac-12 begins its truncated season on Nov. 7. The date of the Independence Bowl will be announced later. Army has made one previous Independence Bowl appearance, a 32-29 loss to the Auburn Tigers in 1996. The Black Knights are off to their best start since they began that season with nine straight wins. - AP College Football

Sandon McCoy had three 1-yard touchdown runs and Army beat Mercer 49-3 on Saturday. McCoy increased his TD total to eight this season and 18 for his career as the Black Knights (6-1) rolled to their fourth straight victory and their 11th in a row over FCS opponents. Cade Ballard threw a 53-yard scoring pass to Tyrell Robinson for Army's first points. It was the first career touchdown pass for Ballard and first scoring reception for Robinson. After Ballard's TD toss, Cameron Jones made the first of three Army interceptions. That led to a McCoy TD as did Reikan Donaldson's block of a punt. Army added three third-quarter touchdowns, on one Jabari Moore's pick-6 of 29 yards.

The final Army points came on Jordan Blackman's 6-yard rush and the senior was mobbed by his teammates after his first career score. Army, with the nation's third-best rushing attack at over 306 yards per game finished with 297 on the ground, outgaining Mercer 360-221. The Bears (0-2) are playing three fall games before an eight-game Southern Conference schedule in the spring. This was their second meeting with Army, the previous coming in 1933 with the Black Knights winning 19-6. Attendance was limited to Army's approximately 4,300 cadets. - AP College Football

Sandon McCoy ran for three first-half touchdowns and Army opened its season with a 42-0 victory over Middle Tennessee on Saturday. McCoy scored on runs of 1, 2 and 4 yards, twice finishing drives that began after Blue Raiders turnovers. Quarterback Christian Anderson added a 24-yard run up the middle in the third quarter and Anthony Adkins' 22-yard run completed a 99-yard drive for the Black Knights' final score in the fourth quarter. Army's longest touchdown came on a 43-yard interception return by Jon Rhattigan. Army's triple-option offense rushed for 340 yards on an average of 5.5 yards per carry on 62 attempts. The shutout was the first since a 21-0 win at Air Force in 2017 and the largest shutout win over an FBS team since a 47-0 victory over Wake Forest in 1963. - AP College Football
