Iowa junior defensive tackle Daviyon Nixon and senior end Chauncey Golston announced Wednesday they are entering the 2021 NFL draft. Senior end Zach VanValkenburg said he will play one more season for the Hawkeyes. Nixon had little if anything left to pr ove as a pro prospect, becoming a consensus first-team All-America and the Big Ten's Defensive Player of the Year after a dominant 2020 season. He tied for the Big Ten lead in quarterback sacks with 5.5, had 13.5 tackles for losses, and anchored one of t he best defenses in the nation."I am very happy for Daviyon and his family," Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz said, in a statement. "I know he put a lot of time into making the choice to take this step. Since he arrived on campus, Daviyon put in a tremendo us amount of work to be a difference maker for us on defense and in the locker room. A year ago he was a part-time player, and today he leaves our program as the Big Ten's Defensive Player of the Year and will likely be a consensus All-American. His team mates love him and his coaches will miss coaching him on and off the field." - The Gazette

On Wednesday, Daviyon Nixon became the 27th player in Hawkeye football history to earn consensus all-American status when he was named a first-team all-America defensive tackle by the Football Writers Association of America. A player needs to gain first- team status on at least three of five specific all-America teams to clinch "consensus" distinction. And Nixon is now 3-for-3 - having pocketed first-team honors from the FWAA, Sporting News and Associated Press - with the American Football Coaches Associ ation team on deck Thursday and the Walter Camp being revealed Jan. 7. - Iowa City Press-Citizen

It'll be very interesting to see what junior defensive tackle Daviyon Nixon decides to do. The smart money is on him turning pro, as he has had a marvelous season Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz said wouldn't surprise him to see end with all-America honors. 2020 BRONKO NAGURSKI TROPHY FINALIST: Daviyon Nixon, DT, Iowa (6-3, 305, Jr., Kenosha, Wis.): Nixon is the rare playmaker tucked in the middle of Iowa's line. He has broken through consistent double-teams to lead the Big Ten with 5.0 sacks and 11.5 tackl es for loss in just seven games in his first season on the Iowa front. His 36 tackles are tied for the most among Big Ten defensive linemen. Nixon opened the season with seven tackles at Purdue and then posted a career-high 11 against West Division champ ion Northwestern, and his 71-yard interception return for a touchdown at Penn State remains a national season highlight. Iowa has not had a Nagurski Trophy winner but linebackers Josey Jewell (2017) and Pat Angerer (2009) are recent finalists. A Nixon wi n would give the Big Ten consecutive honorees after not having a trophy winner since 2006 and Ohio State linebacker James Laurinaitis. As if Daviyon Nixon hadn't expended enough energy on the football field Saturday, there he was on the sideline trying to rev up his Iowa teammates for a crucial late drive. Nixon is a 305-pound defensive tackle who has quickly become the star of this Haw keye team, and maybe the best reason for fans to keep watching even after an 0-2 start to the season. "Even on the sideline, we've got to stay together as a unit and stay together as a team and we've got to just finish," Nixon said after he tried to will the Hawkeyes to a victory over Northwestern at Kinnick Stadium. "I need everybody participating. I need everybody hyped up. I need all the juice from the sidelines, the fans, everybody who's out there."We came out here for a reason, and that's ju st to get the job done. So if we're out there, you've got to be out there in the moment and you've got to love it." Ultimately, Iowa did not get the job done in its home opener, falling to the Wildcats 21-20. This was no fault of Nixon's. The junior who is playing nearly every snap came up with 11 tackles, three of them for a loss, and forced a second-half fumble that may have changed the outcome if the Hawkeyes could have gotten to the football first. Afterward, Nixon said exactly what you want to hear the MVP of a losing team say. "If we don't get the win," a weary Nixon declared, "I never feel like I did enough." - Iowa City Press-Citizen
