This past week's NFL Draft was an SEC reunion of sorts. There were 65 players picked out of the SEC, the most of any conference in the country. The next closest was the Big 10 with 44. The SEC set an all-time record, breaking the previous record of 64 set by, yes, the SEC. It should be no surprise the list of states with the most players in the NFL per capita is dominated by those in the south. Georgia, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida round out the top five. South Carolina and Texas come in at No. 8 and No. 10, respectively. The stranglehold the SEC has on being the top conference in the country in producing NFL players should continue for years to come. Three of the top five 2021 recruiting classes - No. 1 Alabama, No. 3 LSU and No. 4 Georgia - belonged to SEC schools, according to 247Sports. The SEC's slogan is "It Just Means More." That might as well be in reference to NFL Draft picks. - The Clarion Ledger

Kyle Pitts and Kadarius Toney on Thursday night became the first pair of Florida offensive skill players drafted in the opening round since Ike Hilliard and Reidel Anthony in 1997. Pitts played his final collegiate game in Atlanta, and will now begin his NFL career there. The Falcons selected the Mackey Award winner fourth overall, making him the highest-drafted tight end in NFL history. Toney became the first UF receiver since Percy Harvin to go in the first round, heading to the New York Giants with the 20th pick. "I've been waiting for that call my whole life," Pitts told ESPN. "When I saw my phone ring, I felt my heart drop. It's just step one in the right direction." Prior to Pitts, Pro Football Hall of Famer Mike Ditka (1961) and former Denver Broncos All-Pro Riley Odoms (1972) were the only tight ends taken in the top five. Pitts is the first Gators TE to be a first-round pick and the program's highest-drafted player at the position since Ben Troupe, a second-round selection (40th overall) in 2004. - Gainesville Sun

After rewriting the school and SEC record books in his final collegiate season, Mackey Award winner Kyle Pitts made history on the opening night of the 2021 NFL draft. With the Atlanta Falcons selecting him No. 4 overall Thursday, Pitts became the highest tight end taken in the common draft era and the first Gators TE to be a first-round pick. Jordan Reed, who retired in April, was the last UF player drafted at the position (2013) and Ben Troupe had been Florida's highest draftee (second round, No. 40) prior to Pitts. He and Riley Odoms (1972) are the only tight ends to go in the top five of the NFL's common draft era (since 1967). Here's what Pitts will bring to Atlanta, where he played his last college game and broke the UF record for career receiving yards by a tight end - 1,492 yards on 100 catches (second all-time). - Gainesville Sun

Kyle Pitts' All-American brick was put in Thursday ahead of his John Mackey Award ceremony. A day after solidifying himself as a top-10 pick, Kyle Pitts was cemented as a Florida football legend. The unanimous first team All-American received his brick outside of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium on Thursday, UF's first addition since Vernon Hargreaves III in 2015. Florida players named first team All-Americans are honored with a brick in their name, located on the Gator Walk entrance in front of The Swamp. Inside the stadium at Touchdown Terrace, Pitts was also presented Thursday night with the John Mackey Award during a private event. This comes on the heels of Pitts' dominant performance Wednesday at Florida's Pro Day. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.44 seconds and posted the longest wingspan for an NFL receiver or tight end in the last 20 years. - Gainesville Sun

Florida standout Kyle Pitts, the team's best player and the top tight end in the country, is turning pro and skipping a potential bowl game. Pitts made his announcement on social media Sunday, less than 12 hours after the 11th-ranked Gators lost to No. 1 Alabama 52-46 in the Southeastern Conference championship game. The 6-foot-6 junior from Philadelphia finished with seven receptions for 129 yards and a touchdown. He's expected to be the first tight end selected in the 2021 NFL draft and quite possibly a top-10 pick. "I have many great memories during my three years at Florida and I will always be a Gator," Pitts said. "I hope to continue to make Gator Nation proud throughout my career. I will forever miss running out of the tunnel on Saturdays with my brothers in front of 90,000 fans. "I know it's time for me to move on to the next chapter of my life." - AP College Football

Standout tight end Kyle Pitts was scratched from No. 6 Florida's home finale against LSU on Saturday as a precaution. Pitts was dinged up in last week's win at Tennessee, and Florida's medical staff thought it was best to give him an extra week to recover. The Gators did not specify his injury. Florida plays top-ranked Alabama in the Southeastern Conference championship game next Saturday night. Pitts has 36 receptions for 641 yards and a team-leading 11 touchdowns in 6 1/2 games this season. He missed 2 1/2 games because of a concussion and a broken nose, injuries stemming from a hard hit against Georgia in early November. Kemore Gamble started in Pitts' place, and Keon Zipperer also was expected to fill the void. - AP College Football

What might be the best passing combination in college football has been three years in the making. Quarterback Kyle Trask and tight end Kyle Pitts spent 2018 working on the scout team or the second unit, mastering their skills, awaiting their chance and developing an unmistakable synergy. "We obviously go way back.," Trask said. "So chemistry's always been building. " Two seasons later, college football is struggling to break their bond. Trask and Pitts hooked up for three touchdowns against Kentucky, giving them 11 during just 22 quarters in 2020 - a TD pace no tandem in the game can match. The Wildcats' SEC-leading pass defense had no answer for the 6-foot-6, 240-pound Pitts, who finished with five catches for 99 yards. Welcome to the club, Kentucky.

The only thing to slow down Pitts this season was a vicious hit by Georgia safety Lewis Cine that led to his ejection and a concussion for Pitts. The tight end also required nose surgery because his helmet raked across his face and fractured his septum. When he returned to practice Monday, Pitts and Trask went back to work to make sure they were up to speed by Saturday. It was an example, Pitts said, of the commitment of the two players to the Gators and each other. "I can't even describe it for you," Pitts said of his bond with Trask. "But I can just say there's just days like, I feel like it was this whole week, where every day me and him stayed after practice...just getting the plays that we missed and just making sure when we came out here to the game we didn't miss that throw." - Sun Sentinel

Florida tight end Kyle Pitts may have looked at the scoring production by teammates in the position room and decided it was time to return to the lineup. Pitts, injured in the first half of the Georgia game, will play Saturday against Kentucky, UF coach Dan Mullen announced Monday. Pitts was injured late in the first half of the win over Georgia on Nov. 14 after being hit by defensive back Lewis Cine while attempting to catch a pass over the middle. Pitts left the field with a concussion, and Cine was disqualified for targeting on the play. In his stead at tight end, Kemore Gamble has caught three touchdown passes and Keon Zipperer two. "He wanted to go play this past weekend," Mullen said of Pitts, who had nose surgery before last week. Pitts has 24 catches for 414 yards and eight touchdowns through five games. - Times Union

No. 6 Florida could be without standout tight end Kyle Pitts against Arkansas on Saturday because of a concussion. Coach Dan Mullen called Pitts questionable for the game. He was knocked out of last weekend's victory against Georgia in the second quarter when Lewis Cine delivered a crushing blow over the middle. Cine was ejected for targeting. Pitts spent the rest of the game in the locker room. The 6-foot-6 junior from Philadelphia has 24 receptions for 414 yards and a team-high eight touchdowns. His play has been instrumental in making the Gators (4-1) one of the most dynamic offenses in the Southeastern Conference and in the country. Florida ranks 11th nationally in scoring (42.4 points a game) and 17th in total offense (495.4 yards). - AP College Football

Florida quarterback Kyle Trask threw six touchdown passes in the Gators' season-opening win last week against Ole Miss. And people took notice. The performance vaulted Trask into the thick of the Heisman Trophy discussion, with ESPN listing him No. 5 in its Heisman Watch this week (he wasn't even listed among others the week before). Trask completed 21 of 29 passes for 268 yards and four touchdowns Saturday in No. 3-ranked Florida's 38-24 win over South Carolina, surely strengthening his candidacy. Overlooked in all this is the player making Trask look so good: Gators tight end Kyle Pitts. No surprise there. Getting Heisman voters to consider a player who doesn't have QB or RB next to his name is next to impossible. ESPN's 14 Heisman panelists - as well as the more than 900 Heisman voters - should sit up and pay attention to Pitts, who caught four TD passes from Trask against Ole Miss and two more against South Carolina. That means six of his 12 catches (for 227 yards) this season have gone for scores. Most of the others have come when Florida needs a big play. A tight end has never won the Heisman Trophy. - San Diego Union Tribune

After the display Kyle Pitts put on in the win over Ole Miss last Saturday, everyone seems to agree that he is a tight end with wide receiver skills and speed. Many are just finding that out. The UF coaches knew almost right away after he arrived on campus two years ago that he was going to be a potential mismatch for opposing defensive backs and linebackers. "It was in training camp his freshman year," offensive coordinator Brian Johnson said. "It was just a matter of him kind of growing into the position. He was actually (wide receiver) Van (Jefferson's) backup our first year in 2018. We played him a little bit more outside just because he had so much talent - a huge catch radius, he's fast, he can get in and out of breaks. "And then he kind of grew into what we saw in terms of him being an elite tight end. It was fairly early on. He was a guy that as a young player, as a freshman, he played behind Van and really had a chance to learn from him. We put him in the game, he made some plays. He continued to develop and grow, and now he's in a position where he's one of the best players in America."

The Kyle-to-Kyle connection (Trask to Pitts) produced eight receptions for 170 yards and four touchdowns in the 51-35 victory over the Rebels. It looks like this has a chance to become a big deal in college football this season. Pitts said there is no secret to it. "I think our chemistry comes from preparation," he said. "Times during the week where we start practicing running routes, maybe I drop the ball or he didn't like how it looks so we just run it again. And in the offseason, did a lot of talking together, a lot of routes, a lot of work with the receiver corps and tight ends, the whole offense. I feel like our connection is good. It's grown. Each week we put more trust in what we do." - Gainesville Sun

Kyle Pitts' big day in Florida's 51-35 win over Mississippi was the kind rarely seen by a tight end. His eight catches for 170 yards and four touchdowns made him only the third FBS tight end since at least 1996 with at least 150 receiving yards and four touchdowns in a game. The others were Stanford's Colby Parkinson in 2018 and Kentucky's James Whalen Jr. in 1999. Pitts' four receiving TDs were the most by a Florida player since Ike Hilliard had the same number against Tennessee in 1995. His receiving yards total was the highest by a Gator since Demarcus Robinson's 216 against Kentucky in 2014. - AP College Football

It didn't take long for Florida's latest tight ends coach Tim Brewster to make a positive impression on the program. Nor did it take long for him to leave an impression on Gators standout tight end Kyle Pitts. "Coach Brewster is a high-energy guy. He has a great history with tight ends he produced in the NFL," Pitts said. "We're just soaking in knowledge that he's bringing and just adding to what Coach (Larry) Scott already instilled in our minds." While Brewster's arrival comes with much fanfare and excitement, it's never easy to lose a position coach when it comes to the players themselves, especially for the first time - although Pitts acknowledged Scott handled the transition with class. "I talked to Coach Scott, he called me the night he accepted it and he was just saying there's things you have to do in life as far as family and stuff," Pitts revealed. "(Then) I talked to Coach (Dan) Mullen and he told me Coach Brewster was going to be the new coach."

It would make sense that Pitts' expectations for Brewster are high, and that's before considering Scott helped turn him into a bonafide pass-catcher in the SEC as a sophomore. The Philadelphia native hauled in a team-high 54 passes for 649 yards and five touchdowns in 2019, meaning it's safe to say he's Florida's leading returning receiver despite the tight end designation. That versatility isn't going anywhere, although Pitts has made his continued physical transformation a point of emphasis in the offseason. "I'm at 246 right now. Compared to, in season I was playing around 235," he said. "Really just getting heavier and being able to be in-line and very versatile outside and in the slot as well." - Gainesville Sun

Pitts has corralled five touchdowns on the year, good for third on the team, while he leads all tight ends among the Southeastern Conference in receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns. The Philadelphia, Pa. native has tallied five games with at least five receptions throughout the season, while notching five performances of over 60+ receiving yards, including a five-reception and career-high 108-yard performance against LSU on Oct. 12.
