Alabama's defensive problems seem more fundamental than simply Kiffin knowing what the Tide would do. There were plenty of reasons why the defense struggled last season under defensive coordinator Pete Golding. Injuries devastated Alabama, leaving the Ti de with little depth and forcing unproven freshmen into key roles. Players said Golding had to simplify his defensive concepts, and ultimately, it didn't work. There aren't those ready-made excuses available this season. Linebacker Dylan Moses eschewed t he NFL to come back and lead this defense. There is talent all over that side of the ball including multiple likely first-round draft picks in Patrick Surtain and Christian Barmore. Talent shouldn't be the issue with all of the five-star and four-star pl ayers stacked across the defense.I've never seen an Alabama defense look worse than it did Saturday, and yet the Crimson Tide still somehow won. That's a positive though most Alabama fans will likely be focused on the defense's poor performance. U ltimately, if Alabama is going to achieve what it is capable of, it will need a lot more from its defense than it got against the Rebels. Maybe it will be as simple as changing the signals and calls, and we'll see a great defensive performance next week against Georgia. It's fair to say Alabama might not play an offense as good as Ole Miss' for the remainder of its SEC slate, and it can only go up from here. But excuse me if I'm skeptical that's all it will take for a defense that struggles as much as i t did Saturday night. - Birmingham News

Coach Lane Kiffin said the offensive line play has been "very up and down" early on. "I think the center and the tackles have played well at times," Kiffin said Monday. "We struggled at guard so we're gonna have to play a lot better." That's good news fo r the interior pass rush and players like Christian Barmore. The defensive lineman missed the opener with a minor knee injury but was back against the Aggies and Saban said he continues to progress. "He makes a big impact, you know just to have a person who wreaks havoc, just makes big plays," Ray said. "Just to have him back in the huddle as well, it's definitely good to have. Just to work across from him, see how he works, you know, I think that his energy he feeds, other people feed off it too." - Bi rmingham News

Christian Barmore posted a tweet Monday, a message that was likely in reference to his status for Alabama's season-opening game against Missouri on Saturday. "Trust and believe I'll be ready," it read. It's still unclear whether he will be, though. The r edshirt sophomore is still working back from a knee injury he suffered during fall camp and remains questionable for the matchup against Missouri. "I can't really say right now," Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban said of Barmore's status for the game. "He's done a little more each day. I think when you have an injury like this, sometimes the more you do it creates a little soreness. Then you have to back off a little bit. Then you can do a little bit more the next day. He's worked every day this week and he 's made progress and we're encouraged by the progress that he makes." Barmore, the top pass rusher along the Alabama defensive line, is listed as a co-starter at one of the Tide's defensive end spots along with sophomore Justin Eboigbe. Barmore finished last season with 26 tackles, six tackles for a loss and two sacks. - Birmingham News

Alabama defensive lineman Christian Barmore is still working back from the minor knee injury that caused him to miss the team's scrimmage on Saturday. The team hopes to get the redshirt sophomore back to practice in some capacity early next week, but it' s unclear at this point whether he'll be available for the Tide's season-opener against Missouri Sept. 26. "Christian Barmore is doing very, very well," Alabama coach Nick Saban said. "We're hopeful that by Monday of next week he'll be able to do some th ings in practice. You never know for sure exactly how a guy is gonna progress. But at least that's the prognosis for right now. It's probably too early to tell if he'll be ready to play in the first game or not. We'll just have to see how he progresses." Barmore, the team's top pass rusher along the defensive line, finished last season with 26 tackles, six tackles for a loss and two sacks. - Birmingham News

The freshmen on last year's defensive line have shown some of the benefits of that experience in preseason practice. Saban said Justin Eboigbe has been the most consistent of the group and Christian Barmore, while out for a few days with a minor knee inj ury, has been one of the team's best pass rushers. But Eboigbe, Barmore and Byron Young have more growing to do. "We got to get these guys to be good all-around players," Saban said. "Some play the run, got to improve rushing the passer; we got some guys that rush the passer well and they've got to improve on playing the run. It's a group effort to get that group continuing to improve. For the most part, we have been a little more physical up front, and we get challenged every day because we got a prett y good offensive line." - Montgomery Advertiser

Barmore was a trendy breakout player pick for this season after finding a role as an interior pass rusher in the later stages of 2019. He follows the mold of Quinnen Williams, an interior pass rusher who went from 6 1/2 tackles for a loss to 19 1/2 in on e season, using the jump to earn the No. 3 overall spot in the 2019 NFL Draft. A jump of that magnitude is an unfair expectation for Barmore, but Golding singling him out among the most proven parts of UA's defense could forecast the jump that was projec ted for him. It would come with good timing, as well, giving UA another option at nose guard alongside DJ Dale, and one that could be even more valuable in pass-rush packages. - Montgomery Advertiser
