If someone would've told Andre Cisco during his final two years of high school football at IMG Academy in Florida that he would be returning to the Sunshine State four years later as a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars, he wouldn't have believed them. " He would've said when, where and how? Because it was definitely a long road for me," said Cisco, who became the 65th pick in the 2021 NFL Draft on Friday night. "It wasn't clear. It was hard to say how it was going to happen, but I'll say going to IMG is what opened up my eyes to me believing in myself and making that next step to say I'm dedicated."Cisco, a 6-foot-1, 216-pound safety, became the highest-drafted player for the Syracuse football program since 2013 on Friday night. He was in Atlant a surrounded by a group of family and friends when he got the life-changing call. "It means everything. This is exactly what I've been working for," Cisco said during a press conference shortly after he was selected. "I'm somebody that had an unfortunate incident this past season and was still fortunate enough to get drafted this early, so I'm blessed in a lot of different ways." - The Post-Standard

Cisco had surgery earlier Tuesday. "He doesn't h ave any pain or discomfort," his mother said Tuesday morning before the surgery. "He's walking. At the end of the day, that's what I'm happy about." Cisco finished his career with 13 career interceptions, tied with Walt Slovenski for fourth in school his tory. - The Post-Standard

Andre Cisco's playing status for Saturday's game against Duke is unclear after he suffered a lower-body injury during pregame warm-ups last week. Coach Dino Babers would not give more details on his preseason All-American safety during his Monday news co nference. "I've seen him every day," Babers said. "He's smiling. He's been excited. We'll see." Cisco, the nation's active leader in career interceptions, missed SU's 37-20 victory against Georgia Tech on Sept. 26 after colliding with a teammate before t he game. As expected, the momentum from a 10-win season and a nationally televised primetime matchup against one of college football's premier programs proved to be a box office smash for the Syracuse football program last fall. The university drew an average att endance of 42,164 fans to the Carrier Dome in 2019, according to figures compiled by the NCAA. It's the highest mark since the 2002 season, when an average of 42,259 fans showed up for SU's six home games. Syracuse increased its average attendance by 5,1 21 fans from the prior season. Only seven programs saw a higher attendance jump in 2019.The figures are buoyed by a crowd of 50,248 that showed up for the early season home game against Clemson, the program's first home sellout since Donovan McNab b was taking snaps in 1998. A record number of new season-ticket sales also strengthened attendance figures, even as the team's performance waned through a 5-7 record. Kansas led the country with an average attendance increase of 14,451 in Les Miles' fir st season. - The Post-Standard

One of the most productive defensive backs in the nation for the last two years, Cisco is already the FBS active leader in interceptions (12). He followed up an All-American freshman season by earning second-team All-ACC honors in 2019 despite missing th ree games due to injury. Cisco has excellent anticipation, partially a product of his strong preparation, as well as the ball skills to capitalize on the opportunities that provides. An IMG Academy product, Cisco has worked to bulk up since he jumped in as a Day 1 starter and that should help him out in run support this fall. - The Post-Standard

Tony White will be the new defensive coordinator at Syracuse. Orange coach Dino Babers declined to discuss the vacancy on his staff when asked during a signing day news conference on Wednesday, but Arizona State made the announcement on Tuesday night in a release naming Marvin Lewis and Antonio Pierce as co-defensive coordinators for 2020. The school said the two would "fill the role left by previous defensive coordinator Tony White, who assumed the same position at Syracuse University."White con firmed on an Arizona radio show that he would take the Syracuse job. He said it was a “last-second decision” that would allow him to be closer to his mother, who lives in New York City. The position at Syracuse has been open since Zach Arnett accepte d it in January and then changed his mind and took the same position at Mississippi State. Both Arnett and White were on Rocky Long's staff at San Diego State, which uses a 3-3-5 defensive scheme that Babers is ready to embrace as he begins his fifth sea son with the Orange. - AP College Football

Syracuse has hired Sterlin Gilbert as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. The university announced the hire on Thursday. Gilbert is a familiar face. He previously worked with Orange head coach Dino Babers for three seasons, serving in the same role at Eastern Illinois (2012-13) of the Championship Subdivision and at Bowling Green (2014) of the Mid-American Conference. "Coach Babers runs a first-class program. I'm excited to reunite with him," Gilbert, who was head coach at McNeese State last s eason, said in a statement. Gilbert takes over for Mike Lynch, who also was an assistant under Babers at Eastern Illinois and Bowling Green and followed him to Syracuse four years ago. There was no immediate word from the athletics department on Lynch, w ho served as offensive coordinator and running backs coach for four seasons, or Kirk Martin, quarterbacks coach the past two seasons. - AP College Football

Syracuse's quarterback stayed upright and its running backs ran free. The Orange's new-look defense kept its opponent out of the end zone. They only needed one win to avoid being 0-for-the-ACC - and did they ever get it. Syracuse routed Duke 49-6 on Satu rday to snap a four-game losing streak, with Tommy DeVito throwing for two touchdowns and running for another. "It's just one game - that's all it is, one football game - but how important a football game it was to us was extreme based on things that hav e gone on the past two weeks," coach Dino Babers said.Andre Cisco returned an interception 48 yards for a TD to help the Orange (4-6, 1-5 Atlantic Coast Conference) earn their first win against a power-conference team. Syracuse, a 10-point underdo g, pulled away by turning three second-half takeaways into touchdowns and outscored Duke 35-0 after halftime. "I'm really excited that they have the experience of winning again," Babers said. Moe Neal rushed for 115 yards and a 2-yard score, Jarveon How ard also finished with 115 yards rushing with a 28-yard TD and the Orange had a season-best 286 yards on the ground. Syracuse had only one 100-yard rusher in its first nine games, with Neal gaining 123 in the victory over Western Michigan on Sept. 21. - Syracuse/AP College Football

Syracuse coach Dino Babers has fired defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Brian Ward, effective immediately. Babers says in a release Sunday from the university that he felt "a change needed to be made at this time." Defensive ends coach Steve Sta nard has been promoted to defensive coordinator on an interim basis. The move came a day after the Syracuse defense allowed a school-record 496 yards rushing in a humiliating 58-27 home loss to Boston College, which set a school record of its own with 69 1 yards offensively.BC tailbacks AJ Dillon and David Bailey combined to rush for 414 yards and five touchdowns and quarterback Dennis Grosel had three scoring passes in only 10 throws. Stanard, who joined the Syracuse staff in 2017, has spent 20 s easons as a defensive coordinator, most recently at Wyoming where he served as the Cowboys' defensive coordinator and linebackers coach from 2014-16. He's also worked as the defensive coordinator at five other schools. The Orange (3-6, 0-5 Atlantic Coast Conference), who are in a bye week, are the only team in the conference without a league win. - AP College Football
