Cornerbacks Jaycee Horn and Israel Mukuamu, the team's best NFL draft prospects, announced they are each opting out of the final three games to get a head start on their professional training. Safety R.J. Roderick is also opting out for what Bobo labeled "personal/COVID reasons." Horn was likely to leave after the season for the NFL anyway, and Mukuamu had that option as well, although a groin injury against Ole Miss had him doubtful to play the rest of this year. Their decisions along with Roderick to leave now with three games on the table seem to be the consequence of firing Muschamp in midseason, though Bobo wouldn't get into specifics."It's been a long year, it's a different year, when it's told to young kids, 'Hey, you don't have to play t his year, you can opt out and it doesn't count,' it gives them a way out, in my opinion," said Bobo, who doesn't anticipate any more opt-outs before the year but cautioned that one never knows. "This isn't the only place where coaches are having issues w ith a long season and the ability to opt out. There's no hard feelings for anybody." - The Post and Courier

South Carolina has lost another starting cornerback in Israel Mukuamu after he opted out of the season, joining his defensive backfield partner Jaycee Horn in preparing for the upcoming NFL draft. Interim coach Mike Bobo said Tuesday four players have op ted out since the school dismissed coach Will Muschamp on Sunday. Joining Mukwamu and Horn are safety R.J. Roderick and defensive lineman Makius Scott. The Gamecocks (2-5) face Missouri (2-3) on Saturday night. Mukuamu is a 6-foot-4, 205 pound junior who was an all-Southeastern Conference second-team selection in 2019. He and Horn shared the team lead with two interceptions each. Horn announced his decision to opt out Monday. Bobo, the first-year offensive coordinator, was named to take over for Muscham p. Bobo said that defensive line starters Aaron Sterling and Brad Johnson are out for the year with injuries. - AP College Football

South Carolina football cornerback Israel Mukuamu got as far as warming up a bit before the Auburn game. But after he went back to the locker room, he came out without pads, leaving the Gamecocks a little short in the secondary. For the fourth week in a row, there's a question looming if his nagging groin issue will abate, and for the fourth week in a row, USC coach Will Muschamp sounded upbeat about where he was. Muschamp said Mukuamu was out practicing for the Gamecocks on Tuesday. He managed to start against Vanderbilt and Florida, but played sparingly. "I'm hoping to get Cam back tomorrow," Muschamp said. "We'll see tomorrow. Israel practiced today." Smith had a cleat spike go into his heel and went to the hospital as a precaution against infection s (he had to get stitches). Mukuamu was a second-team All-SEC player last season. Without him, sophomore John Dixon has had to step up, as has the rest of the Gamecocks secondary. They held their own against a slew of talented players from Auburn, but we re also extremely thin, with safety/nickel Jammie Robinson, already a starter, being the next man in if either Dixon or Jaycee Horn had been hurt (the pair played basically the whole game). - Rock Hill Herald

In 53 games with the Gamecocks, Muschamp and defensive coordinator/defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson have yet to field a solid, much less outstanding, secondary. It's as familiar to hear Muschamp say the secondary needs to play better as it is to h ear him say he's extremely happy with his latest recruiting class. It's only two games, but this year's secondary is already on pace to set a bad kind of history. "We're averaging eight yards an attempt right now, and that's the most I've ever been aroun d," Muschamp said.The average number of yards USC is allowing per pass attempt is actually 8.7. Tennessee's Jarrett Guarantano and Florida's Kyle Trask are experienced, strong-armed quarterbacks, but that's no excuse when the Gamecocks simply don' t tackle. Toney and several of Florida's other playmakers received hard shoulder bumps in lieu of tackles from USC's defenders Saturday on their way to scoring 38 points. Getting arms around a man, wrapping him up and bringing him down remains an elusive concept. "There was no problem," Mukuamu said about the constant lapses in coverage. South Carolina football coach Will Muschamp struck an optimistic tone. He'd been asked about a pair of key defenders in Jahmar Brown and Israel Mukuamu ahead of the team's game at Florida. Brown has been sidelined for weeks with a knee issue, while a tig ht groin cost Mukuamu the second half of USC's opener vs. Tennessee. But at practice Wednesday, things looked to be OK. "They're all looking good," Muschamp said. "We're all good." Each defender could hold a crucial role in trying to slow a Gators offens e that looked ferocious in Game 1 with more than 600 yards and 50 points. Mukuamu is an anchor in the scondary that is bit short on top-flight reliable players. Without him, they have to dip into a group of younger guys on the bench, and that's before sw itching things up to account for the matchup nightmare that is Gators tight end Kyle Pitts (170 yards and four touchdowns against Ole Miss last Saturday). - Rock Hill Herald

Israel Mukuamu, a starter at corner, who along with fellow corner Jaycee Horn, is drawing NFL draft buzz and considered one of the best corner tandems in the country. But realizing Mukuamu stands 6-4, USC's safeties have often been small, quick players w ho have no chance of outjumping a receiver and have problems tackling those receivers when they come down with the ball, it's often been a social media gripe about why Mukuamu doesn't move to safety. He won't move. But he'll play. "He reps at safety. Isr ael's very smart, he can play anything," Muschamp said. "Let's get the best four DBs out there. Right now, who those four are, I couldn't tell you." Mukuamu started the season opener at safety last year, then J.T. Ibe took over for the duration of the se ason except one game, when he handed off to Jammie Robinson. 2020 PAYCOM JIM THORPE AWARD PRESEASON WATCH LIST: Israel Mukuamu, South Carolina, Jr.,...Mukuamu, a 6-4, 205-pound defensive back from Bossier City, La., was an AP second-team All-SEC selection a year ago. He led the Gamecocks with four interceptions, i ncluding three in the upset win over third-ranked Georgia. A starter in 14-consecutive games, Mukuamu was named to the 2020 Lott IMPACT Trophy preseason watch list. Mukuamu has played mostly corner his first two years and became known as a good one last year, when he intercepted Georgia's Jake Fromm three times and led the Gamecocks to one of the biggest wins in their history. But at 6-4, could Mukuamu's height be o f better use elsewhere? There has been talk of him being moved to safety, and he has started two games there. You could put together a season highlight tape of this guy from just one game last season - USC's overtime upset of Georgia in Athens. In what has to be one of the greatest cornerback performances in SEC history, Mukuamu intercepted UGA quarterback Jake Fromm three times. One of those picks he returned 53 yards for a touchdown. His third and final pick came in overtime. He's a big (6-foot-4, 205 pounds), rangy DB who obviously knows how to make plays. - Gainesville Sun

Israel Mukuamu returned the first of his three interceptions 53 yards for a touchdown and South Carolina took advantage of Jake Fromm's four turnovers to beat No. 3 Georgia 17-10 in double overtime on Saturday. Parker White's 23-yard field goal in the se cond overtime proved to be enough when Georgia's Rodrigo Blankenship was wide left on his attempt from 42 yards. Blankenship's second miss of the game sent South Carolina players charging onto the field to celebrate the upset. White missed a 33-yard atte mpt in the first overtime. "I had confidence that I was going to get to go out there and have a chance to win the game for us in the next overtime," he said.Georgia (5-1, 2-1 Southeastern Conference) suffered a big hit to its national championship hopes. The Bulldogs, favored by 24½ points, could not overcome three interceptions and a lost fumble by Fromm, the senior quarterback known for avoiding mistakes. Fromm did not throw an interception in the Bulldogs' first five games. "You can't beat an ybody when you have a 4-0 turnover margin," Georgia coach Kirby Smart said. "We didn't force any on defense.
