2020 ALL-BIG 12 CONFERENCE FOOTBALL FIRST TEAM: DL Joseph Ossai, Texas,...Ossai, a team captain in 2020, recorded 55 tackles, 16.0 tackles for loss - the most in the Big 12 and second-most nationally - five sacks, three forced fumbles, one recovery, two pass breakups and two quarterback hurries this year prior to declaring for the NFL Draft. His performance on the field helped him become a semifinalist for the Chuck Bednarik Award for the first time in his career. Ossai recorded a tackle for loss in eight of nine games this season, including matching his career high with six TFLs in a road win over then-No. 6 Oklahoma State. - Texas Football

As the pace-setter on the defense, Joseph Ossai continued his career year against the Wildcats. Ossai drew the attention of the offense for most of the game, but still managed to finish with two tackles for loss in the contest, giving him a conference-high 16 on the season, the second-highest total under Tom Herman and the most among all Power Five players. His ability to both impact the blocking scheme and create chaos in the backfield have been a differentiator for the Longhorns in the last two seasons. Texas is 4-1 in games when Ossai has multiple tackles for loss in a game with the lone loss coming this year against Oklahoma. - Austin American Statesman

2020 LOTT IMPACT TROPHY SEMIFINALIST: Joseph Ossai, DE, Texas,...Ossai's best performance of the season came in Texas' come-from-behind road win over No. 6 Oklahoma State on Halloween, as he tallied 12 tackles, six tackles for loss, three sacks, a forced fumble and a recovered fumble. His effort made him the first Power Five player to record at least 12 tackles, six TFLs and three sacks in a game since Nebraska's Ndamukong Suh in the 2009 Big 12 Championship Game (12 tackles, 6.0 TFLs, 4.5 sacks). - Texas Football

Ossai has emerged as Texas' best player this season. He began his career out of position as a linebacker in a 3-3-5 system under former defensive coordinator Todd Orlando. And while the new scheme hasn't fit the tools of Sterns, it has unleashed Ossai. He's back at defensive end, which allows him to get after the passer and set the edge against the run. Ossai's motor is unmatched. He's tied with Sterns for second on the team with 52 tackles. He leads the team with 14 tackles for loss and four sacks. He played in 14 games as a freshman. He finished that year with 20 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble. He became a force as a sophomore, leading Texas in tackles after starting all 13 games. He gave fans a glimpse of his potential back at defensive end in the Alamo Bowl win over Utah to close out the 2019 season by recording six tackles for loss and three sacks. - Austin American Statesman

Ossai was named the Big 12 defensive player of the week for the first time in his career on Monday. This comes after he was named the Walter Camp national defensive player of the week on Sunday. Ossai had 12 tackles, six tackles for loss, three sacks, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery in UT's 41-34 overtime victory over then-No. 6 Oklahoma State. Quarterback Sam Ehlinger told reporters Monday about a phone conversation he had with Ossai after the Oklahoma game in October. Ossai was upset that he didn't make game-changing plays against the Sooners. Ossai closed the Oklahoma State victory with a fourth-down sack of Spencer Sanders. "You can say what you want about our team, but our guys, they don't stop fighting," Ossai said. - Austin American Statesman

NOV 2 BIG 12 DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Joseph Ossai, LB, Jr., Texas,...After logging 12 tackles, six tackles for loss, three sacks, a forced fumble and a recovered one, Ossai helped guide the Longhorns to a comeback victory over No. 6 Oklahoma State. He was the first autonomy conference player to record at least 12 tackles, six tackles for loss and three sacks in a game since 2006 and it marked only the sixth time any FBS player has hit all three of those totals in the same game since 2000. Ossai was also named the Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week. - Big 12 Football

Texas Longhorns head coach Tom Herman expects junior Jack linebacker Joseph Ossai to be available on Saturday in Stillwater against the Oklahoma State Cowboys after Ossai suffered a shoulder injury during the win over the Baylor Bears. Ossai left the game just before halftime, but was able to return late despite suffering the anterior capsule strain. "He'll be braced up and our plan is to have him participate as tolerated in practice tomorrow," Herman said on Monday. "If he can't go tomorrow, then I would imagine Wednesday, he should be good to go, and I would be pretty surprised if we did not see Joseph Ossai play a significant part in this football game on Saturday in Stillwater." Ossai suffered a similar injury last season and played largely with one arm for most of the year until he was finally able to regain his health during preparation for the Alamo Bowl against Utah. In that resounding victory, Ossai earned Defensive MVP honors after posting nine tackles, six tackles for loss, and three sacks. - Burnt Orange Nation

Joseph Ossai applied consistent pressure, forcing a fumble and getting his first sack of the season. He and Keondre Coburn each had 11 tackles. T'Vondre Sweat finished with five. Ossai leads the team with 22 tackles; he also has a sack, a forced fumble, two quarterback hurries and two pass breakups. - Austin American Statesman

On Monday, two members of UT's football team made the cut for the Bednarik Award's preseason watch list. Texas juniors Joseph Ossai and Caden Sterns were two of the 90 names on the annual watch list. The Bednarik Award is given each season to the best defensive player in college football. Ossai led UT last year with his 90 tackles. He ended his sophomore season with a nine-tackle, three-sack performance in the Alamo Bowl. According to Texas, Ossai is the only FBS-level player in the last 20 years to record three sacks and six stops behind the line of scrimmage in a bowl game. Primarily used as a linebacker in 2019, Ossai will soon play off the defensive line more in new coordinator Chris Ash's defense. - Austin American Statesman

Forget about any preseason accolades, which are sure to come. Forget about those NFL mock drafts that have Ossai pegged to go early next spring. A sure-fire team captain believes 2020 has to be the year the Longhorns break through. "It tells me nothing. I know it sounds like, 'Oh, he's … whatever.' But I don't care,'" Ossai told reporters Thursday. "I want to win a national championship. I've never won a championship. We didn't win district in seventh or eighth grade. In high school, we didn't win a state championship, so I want to win a national championship." Strong stuff, for sure. Texas hasn't even won the Big 12 since 2009. The Horns have been in conference title contention only twice since then - 2013 and 2018. And it's early May, so it's OK to dream big.

Still, Ossai talks with an unmistakable passion that's hard to dismiss as empty bluster. "Everybody feels it can be this year," he said. "It can't be lip service, though. You can't just say, 'Oooh, this is national championship year.' You saying national championship year is not going to spin the football gods into giving you a national championship. You have to go work for it. You have to put in the work. You have to do the things you say you want to do." Look at what LSU did, Ossai said. Look at that roster and what the Tigers achieved last season. It can happen in Austin, too, he believes. "I'm sure everybody feels the energy and the excitement and the anticipation coming into it," Ossai said, "but we'll have to wait and see." - Burnt Orange Nation
