Jalen Mayfield hoped to hear his name called in the first round. Then the second round came and went. He'll have to settle for the third. The junior offensive lineman was the second Michigan player to come off the board in the 2021 NFL Draft, taken No. 68 by the Atlanta Falcons on Friday. It was later than where most draft analysts slotted Mayfield, an athletic 6-foot-5, 326-pound tackle with a large reach and high ceiling. He was the second Michigan player drafted by an NFL team this year, joining first-round pick Kwity Paye (No. 21, Colts). "I'm able to play center, guard, tackle. I'm pretty comfortable on the left (side)," Mayfield told reporters in March. "My freshman year, I played left tackle. And then the last two years, I played right tackle. So I'm really comfortable with both sides. "I think the more versatile you are, the better chance you have of lasting longer in the NFL." There's been no indication that Mayfield will play anything other than tackle at the next level. He played the position for three years at Michigan, where he moved from the left side to the right after his freshman season in 2018. - Ann Arbor News

Offensive line coach Ed Warinner said Wednesday that Mayfield was back practicing, but the redshirt sophomore still missed his fourth straight game Saturday. Remember, Mayfield was one of three Michigan players who initially opted out before the season. With just three games remaining in 2020, he could decide to sit out the rest of the year even if healthy to not risk another injury. - Ann Arbor News

There's a chance that the Michigan football team gets two of its starting offensive linemen back this weekend against Penn State. Tackles Ryan Hayes and Jalen Mayfield are back practicing this week and could be available for Saturday's game in Ann Arbor (noon, ABC), position coach Ed Warinner told reporters on Wednesday. "They're both practicing, so we're just seeing how quickly they can come back," Warinner said. "They're bot out there doing practice reps, so it's good to see them out there. I won't say anything other than that - but they are not in the training room during practice."

Warinner added that Hayes and Mayfield - sidelined the last three games with undisclosed lower-body injuries - are "on the field, in gear and working out." "We're moving them along, and they want to get back as quickly as they can," Warinner said. "So, we'll see what that is. Both - or one - might be available Saturday." In their absence, Michigan has started redshirt freshman Karsen Barnhart at left tackle, moved redshirt junior Andrew Stueber out to right tackle and started true freshman Zak Zinter at right guard. - Ann Arbor News

Jalen Mayfield, who announced plans in August to forego his remaining three years of eligibility and declare for the NFL draft, has been granted permission to play during the abbreviated Big Ten season. Head coach Jim Harbaugh revealed the decision Monday on the "Inside Michigan Football" radio show. "Specifically with Jalen Mayfield, he did submit a waiver to be able to come back and play," Harbaugh told host Jon Jansen. "And that waiver has been granted. "I think there's a few stipulations that he has to do, but I think that waiver has been granted that he can return." Harbaugh did not disclose the stipulations, but offensive line coach Ed Warinner said he anticipates having the 6-foot-5, 320-pound Mayfield back this week as the Wolverines begin padded practices. "Everything looks good for Jalen to return," Warinner said on the show. "He's back on campus taking classes. He'll be back in action this week, helping at practice and going through the training." - Ann Arbor News

Jalen Mayfield is moving on from Michigan football. The redshirt sophomore offensive tackle announced Tuesday that he was declaring for the NFL draft and opting out of any potential spring season, marking an end to a career that was just in the process of blossoming. "These last few weeks have been filled with stress and have put me in a place where I have a difficult decision to make," Mayfield wrote in a statement on Twitter. "With that being said, I have decided to enter the 2021 NFL draft. Forever go blue!" - Detroit Free Press

Four of Michigan's five starters on the offensive line last season were NFL draft picks, but the one returner has the potential to be the highest selection of the bunch. It didn't take long after the 2020 draft for right tackle Jalen Mayfield to start appearing on several early 2021 mock drafts as a potential first-rounder. That is certainly high praise for a player entering his redshirted sophomore season with 13 career starts under his belt, but they are projections Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh believes are warranted. "Expectations are really high," Harbaugh told reporters on a Zoom call Wednesday. "He looks great. Since Jalen Mayfield has been here, every time I watch the film of practice, I like watching No. 73. That is a thing. I like the way he plays. I like watching him play football. I think, so far, the offseason indicates he's going to be even better. Super excited for him and his opportunity this year."

Entering fall camp last year, Mayfield and Andrew Stueber were in competition for the starting right tackle job -- the only open starting spot along the line. With Stueber suffering a torn ACL just before the season, Mayfield won the job and never relented. The 6-foot-5, 319-pound Grand Rapids Catholic Central graduate is now the only returning starter heading into 2020, and Harbaugh said he looks the part. "Jalen Mayfield looks phenomenal as a tackle, as a football player," Harbaugh said. "He's another example of somebody who's really done a great job this entire offseason." - Ann Arbor News

While a return to college football this fall appeared to have gained steam last week, University of Michigan president Mark Schlissel says there won't be a football season at UM unless students are able to take on-campus classes. Schlissel, in remarks appearing in a Wall Street Journal story published Sunday, said he will make the decision soon on how the upcoming school year will look. The University suspended on-campus activities in mid-March in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"If there is no on-campus instruction then there won't be intercollegiate athletics, at least for Michigan," Schlissel said to the WSJ. He later added he has "some degree of doubt as to whether there will be college athletics (anywhere), at least in the fall." How Michigan proceeds with classes, online or in-person, for the fall will be in place for the entire school year, he said. "What's going to be different in January?" Schlissel told the paper. This comes on the heels of decisions made last week that strongly suggested a return to college football this fall. - Detroit News

It's going to be awfully lonely on Michigan's campus. In addition to the university joining several other state schools in shifting to online classes amid the global coronavirus outbreak, the athletic department announced several plans Wednesday night. Among them, all Michigan sporting events over the next month will be played in front of limited crowds, which each student athlete allowed a maximum of two family members. That includes the often well-attended baseball and softball games. Media still will be allowed in attendance. Later Wednesday, the Big Ten announced all spring sports would have limited spectators.

Also at Michigan, recruiting will be shut down for all sports, including football, with no on-campus visits allowed, and no off-campus travel by coaches. "The health and well-being of our student-athletes, coaches and staff is paramount as we assess the near and long-term potential impacts," Michigan's athletic department said in a statement. "This is a rapidly evolving situation. "UM officials and medical experts, in close coordination with the state and local public health departments, are closely monitoring for developments and will offer additional guidance and messaging as soon as it is available." - Detroit News
