*Jaycee Horn, South Carolina, Player News

Jaycee Horn remains No. 1. South Carolina's junior cornerback was the first defensive player taken in the first round of the NFL Draft on April 29, the Carolina Panthers believing Horn's pre-draft assertion that he is the best corner among this year's selection. Horn, who wore jersey No. 1 during two of his three seasons as a Gamecock, was the eighth overall pick. He is the 15th USC player taken in the first round, the third in four years, the fifth USC defensive back to be a first-rounder and the 19th USC DB to be drafted since the Gamecocks joined the SEC in 1992. Exact contract terms haven't been finalized, but last year's eighth pick, Arizona Cardinals linebacker (and former Clemson standout) Isaiah Simmons, received a four-year, $20.66 million deal, including a signing bonus of $12.58 million.

As the eighth selection, Horn is the third-highest Gamecock ever drafted. USC has had two No. 1s (George Rogers and Jadeveon Clowney) and two No. 7s (Sterling Sharpe and Troy Williamson). The son of former NFL receiver Joe Horn, Jaycee Horn had a meteoric rise up draft boards midway through his third and final season at USC. A shutdown corner who had dabbled at nickel and safety the previous two years due to injuries to the Gamecocks' other DBs, Horn was named Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week following a 30-22 upset of No. 15 Auburn. - The Post and Courier

South Carolina cornerback Jaycee Horn believes he's the best defender in the NFL draft. He showed the pros he's one of the fast with a sizzling performance at the school's pro day Wednesday. Horn, a 6-foot-1, 205-pound defensive back from Alpharetta, Georgia, is projected as a first-rounder and ran a time of 4.37 seconds in the 40-yard dash. "I feel I'm the best defensive player in the draft," Horn said Tuesday. Horn showcase his speed for 61 NFL personnel including head coaches Matt Rhule of Carolina and Mike Vrabel of Tennessee. He's expected to be among the first cornerbacks chosen and did little to change that image as he worked out Wednesday. Horn, the son of former New Orleans and Atlanta receiver Joe Horn, said he's been matched against some of the best receivers in the Southeastern Conference and came out on top. "I'm versatile, have the size, (have) the speed and athleticism," the younger Horn said. - Rock Hill Herald

2020 ALL-SEC SECOND TEAM (COACHES): DB Jaycee Horn, South Carolina,...Horn, a 6-1 junior from Alpharetta, Ga., played and started in seven games in 2020 and had 16 tackles, six pass breakups, a pair of interceptions and a tackle for loss. Horn's big game came in a win over Auburn (Oct. 17), when he had two interceptions, a pass deflection that led to a third pick, four total pass breakups and three tackles in the 30-22 win. - South Carolina Football

The post-Will Muschamp Era fallout has begun, and the first entry is a big one. Jaycee Horn, arguably South Carolina's best defensive player, is opting out of the rest of the season so he can prepare for the NFL draft. The son of former NFL receiver Joe Horn, Jaycee Horn has raised his stock this season and become a potential first-round pick. He was named National Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 18 after intercepting two passes and deflecting another pass that became a third interception in a 30-22 win over Auburn. Horn has 16 tackles this year, one for loss, and the two picks among six pass breakups. While those two interceptions are the only takeaways of his career, he's had sparse opportunities since teams won't throw to his side of the field. It's unclear if Muschamp being fired had anything to do with Horn's decision, but whatever the reason, the Gamecocks will play their final three games without him. They're looking destitute at corner after Israel Mukuamu, one of Horn's closest friends, re-injured his groin in last week's loss at Mississippi and is expected to be out for a while. - The Post and Courier

With defensive backs Israel Mukuamu and Cam Smith sidelined, Horn and fellow cornerback John Dixon played all 83 snaps. Dixon saw plenty of action, too, against Anthony Schwartz; Auburn's fastest receiver caught 6 passes for 59 yards. But Williams is the designated "go-to" guy, a 6-3 junior who caught 59 passes last season. Muschamp and defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson knew just what was coming from offensive coordinator Chad Morris, the former Arkansas head coach and Clemson play-caller. "When T-Rob gave me the task of following (Williams), I kind of felt that I would have opportunities to make plays on the ball," Horn said.

Horn had four pass breakups to go with his pair of interceptions. He watched Nix give Williams hand signals before the snap. He guarded against deep balls and forced throws underneath. "That's a bad man," South Carolina quarterback Collin Hill said. "I hate going against him." Williams caught four passes for 74 yards. It ruined a Palmetto State homecoming for the Nix family. Auburn sophomore quarterback Bo Nix lived in the Lowcountry from age 10-12 when his father, former Auburn quarterback Patrick Nix, was a Charleston Southern assistant coach on Jay Mills' staff. - Rock Hill Herald

South Carolina, thanks in huge part to Horn's first two college interceptions, won the game. The 30-22 upset before 15,766 fans at Williams-Brice Stadium was the program's first victory over Auburn since 1933 and will knock the No. 15 Tigers from the rankings. The performance proved what head coach Will Muschamp has believed for a long time, that Horn, particularly with his emotions in check, is an "elite" cornerback bound for pro football success. Horn didn't exactly throw gratitude at the NFL, where his father Joe Horn was a star receiver. But he did thank Auburn. "I'm glad (quarterback) Bo Nix threw at me a lot," Horn said. Horn left Williams-Brice Stadium with a football he planned to present to his parents. Truly, it's one of the more deserved game balls in recent South Carolina history. - The Post and Courier

Kevin Harris ran for two touchdowns and South Carolina turned three interceptions thrown by Bo Nix into points to defeat No. 15 Auburn for the first time in 87 years with a 30-22 victory on Saturday. The Tigers (2-2 Southeastern Conference) had won eight straight in the series and jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the opening 10 minutes. But Nix, the sophomore quarterback, threw three picks and the Gamecocks (2-2) cashed in each time to win consecutive games for the first time in more than a year. Shi Smith had eight catches including a 10-yard TD grab midway through the third quarter and put South Carolina ahead for good, 20-19. Auburn was driving on its following series when Nix threw his third interception - and second to cornerback Jaycee Horn who brought the ball down the left sidelines to the Tigers' 8. Harris was in the end zone a play later for a 27-19 lead and Auburn could not recover.

The Tigers closed to 30-22 on Anders Carlson's 22 yard field goal with 6:39 left. Auburn got the ball back once more with 2:15 left and drove to the South Carolina 13. Nix, though, was called for intentional grounding trying to avoid a sack and the Gamecocks held on to beat the Tigers for the first time since 1933. South Carolina had not won back-to-back games since defeating Kentucky and then-No. 3 Georgia last season. That win over the Bulldogs was the last time the Gamecocks had beaten a ranked opponent. Auburn's offense looked unstoppable the first half and doubled up South Carolina in yardage (243-119) the first 30 minutes - except when Nix put the ball in danger. Nix was 8 of 14 for 94 yards on the Tigers first two drives for a 9-0 lead. But Nix threw into triple coverage on the next series and was picked off by Horn, son of longtime NFL receiver Joe Horn. - South Carolina/AP College Football
