The Kentucky football team did not quite make it to the end of the season without a player opting out. Third-year sophomore cornerback Kelvin Joseph tweeted Monday evening he is opting out of the rest of UK's season to prepare for the NFL draft. "Growing up in North Baton Rouge, not many have had the opportunity that I have to play in the NFL," Joseph tweeted. "My family struggled but still managed to raise a successful young Black man. I am taking this opportunity to focus on preparing for the NFL draf t." A former top-50 recruit, Joseph transferred to Kentucky from LSU prior to the 2019 season. He sat out last season per NCAA transfer rules then made his debut as Kentucky's starting cornerback this fall.Joseph leads Kentucky's team with four in terceptions but has also drawn significant criticism for several careless penalties, including a personal foul for Saturday's game at Florida when he shoved a Florida player after the play was finished. Earlier Monday, UK coach Mark Stoops said Joseph wa s still working to understand the culture of Kentucky's program. "Kelvin is a competitor," Stoops said. "He understands once you talk to him and get him on the side and talk to him. He's very competitive in games but some of it is absolutely unacceptable . You know, like the one play on Saturday, there's just no excuses. You can't have it, it's totally unacceptable, and it will be addressed." - Courier Journal

Joseph started UK's previous nine games and was listed as a No. 1 cornerback ahead of the Wildcats' game against South Carolina this week. The former four-star recruit sat out the entirety of last season due to NCAA transfer rules; he played in 11 games as a true freshman at LSU during the 2018 season. The news broke during head coach Mark Stoops' weekly radio show. Host Tom Leach asked Stoops about the decision on the air."He came in and visited with me after my press conference today," Stoops s aid. "Kelvin, he's a good young man and I appreciate what he did for us. He just didn't, I don't know how to phrase it. He didn't really want to opt out but he didn't want to play this week...I can't just have him out there standing around saying, 'I'm n ot playing in this game.' That's not how we're going to do this at Kentucky." Stoops said that he looks forward to aiding Joseph however he can throughout the pre-draft process. "He's got a lot of talent but he's also young and has got a lot of work to d o," Stoops said. "… He doesn't have a lot of tape." - Herald Leader

Kelvin Joseph and Jami Davis returned interceptions for touchdowns in the first half and Kentucky shut out No. 18 Tennessee in the second half to bury the Volunteers 34-7 Saturday. It was Kentucky's first win in Neyland Stadium since 1984, the Wildcats' largest margin of victory in Knoxville since 56-0 in 1893 and their most lopsided victory in the series since 1935. After getting six interceptions and allowing only a safety against Mississippi State last week, Kentucky (2-2) picked off three passes aga inst the Vols (2-2). Tennessee has now followed up an eight-game winning streak with a two-game losing streak. Joseph's 41-yard touchdown and Davis' 85-yard return - both off interceptions thrown by Jarrett Guarantano - helped put Kentucky up 17-0 in the second quarter. With about 5 minutes left in the third quarter and trailing by 20, Tennessee went three-and-out for a second consecutive possession and was showered with boos from the sparse crowd of 22,519. Earlier in the season, Kentucky had shown sig ns of having difficulty recovering from adversity. Against Ole Miss, a missed field goal was followed by 21 straight Ole Miss points and a 42-41 loss. Kentucky seemed to solve that Saturday. - Kentucky/AP College Football

The name of LSU sophomore cornerback Kelvin Joseph is back in the NCAA transfer portal. Joseph, whose father said "he's not transferring" after he entered and exited the portal in May, has returned into the transfer database, according to a report by AL. com. The four-star recruit out of Scotlandville High in Baton Rouge played in 11 of LSU's 13 games in 2018, and recorded 12 tackles and broke up one pass as a true freshman. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Joseph missed one game with an apparent hamstring injury and missed the Fiesta Bowl victory over UCF when he was suspended for a violation of team rules. The most recent report is the latest transfer news in what seemed to be indecision by Joseph back in May. Joseph's name was in the portal, but by late afternoon, there was no trace of the player's name in 247Sports' tracking of the transfer portal after the site was updated just before 5 p.m. "He's not transferring," Joseph's father, Kelvin Sr., told The Advocate then. - Baton Rouge Advocate
