Move over Miami. You have company. Alabama tied the Hurricanes 2004 record for the most first-round NFL draft picks Thursday when six Crimson Tide products heard their names called. Najee Harris to Pittsburgh tied the record with the 24th overall pick bu t he was the last name called. Christian Barmore was left in the green room in Cleveland after receiving multiple first-round projections. He'll be selected in the second or third-round Friday along with former teammates Landon Dickerson with Deonte Brow n and Dylan Moses also on the board."It makes me feel like a proud papa," a smiling Nick Saban said on the ABC broadcast when asked about tying the record with six. Before Thursday, the most first-round picks in a given season for Alabama was four -- a number achieved five times (2020, 2018, 2017, 2012 and 2011). Miami in 2004 saw its six players taken in the first 21 picks. It started with Sean Taylor at No. 5 and included other future stars like Jonathan Vilma (No. 12), D.J. Williams (No. 17) a nd Vince Wilfork (No. 21). - Birmingham News

2020 BRONKO NAGURSKI TROPHY FINALIST: Patrick Surtain II, CB, Alabama (6-2, 202, Jr., Plantation, Fla.): Surtain is regarded as the nation's top cornerback and presents a consistent wall out on the edge, having allowed 25 yards or fewer in eight of nine games this season. Teams have targeted him only 36 times with 14 completions over nine games and he has allowed only one touchdown this season. Opposing quarterbacks have a passer rating of 50.2 when targeting Surtain in coverage, fifth-best in the FBS. Against pass-happy Mississippi State, Surtain was targeted once in 47 attempts, and the junior turned it into a 25-yard pick-six. Top-ranked Alabama has had one Bronko Nagurski Trophy winner, defensive end Jonathan Allen in 2016. The Crimson Tide has had a finalist in nine of the last 10 seasons, most recently nose guard Quinnen Williams (2018), safety Minkah Fitzpatrick (2017) and linebacker Reuben Foster (2016). Going back to cornerback Antonio Langham in the award's first year in 1993, five of Alabam a's 12 all-time finalists have come from the secondary. A Surtain win would give the SEC three of the last five honorees (Allen in 2016, Kentucky linebacker Josh Allen in 2018). - Football Writers Association of America/Charlotte Touchdown Club

Barring any changes of heart, Alabama should have its biggest stars on the field for this fall's football season. Wide receiver Jaylen Waddle and cornerback Patrick Surtain, in their first organized media availabilities since the Citrus Bowl, both said S aturday they do not intend on opting out of the upcoming season, which begins Sept. 26 at Missouri. "I wasn't considering it very heavily," Surtain said during a video conference. "I wanted to be out there with my teammates and play this year, because we have a lot to prove this season. I feel like it was best for me to play this year, to give out some extra film and give another opportunity to play with the guys."Added Waddle: "I honestly never thought about it. I wanted to be here for my team, and wanted to just get out there and compete." Their comments came after wide receiver DeVonta Smith said earlier this week he will play this season, and running back Najee Harris said opting out never crossed his mind. Linebacker Dylan Moses also expres sed a desire to put a "punctuation mark" on his Alabama career by playing this season. - Birmingham News

Alabama's star cornerback, its lone returning starter in the secondary, said he has embraced the leadership role he had no choice but to take. "I know I have to play a big role in that leadership role, provide the guys and give them expectations," Surtai n said. "Come on the field every day and lead those guys to be that dude they can look to, to play ball." It's a different style of preparation for Surtain. In the past, he could simply focus on making himself better as a player - which he did well, tyin g for the team lead with eight pass breakups and adding two interceptions last season.Only 12 SEC defensive backs had more than eight pass breakups last season, and he was a big part of a secondary that lifted UA to a tied for third finish nationa lly in yards per attempt allowed. But now, he has more than his own play to manage. "You have to expect more from yourself. You have to come out with the right demeanor and leading those guys," Surtain said. "I got to speak up more and deliver my message more. I'm living up to that expectation and I'm very excited about it." - Montgomery Advertiser
