Quincy Roche, Miami, Player News

Let's start with a simple premise from this 2021 NFL draft: Transferring from Temple does not improve your draft position. The evidence: edge rusher Quincy Roche, transfer from Temple to Miami, sixth-round selection, Pittsburgh Steelers; tight end Kenny Yeboah, transfer from Temple to Mississippi, undrafted. More evidence: All the non-Power 5 draftees, and the limited number of drafted transfers up to Power 5 schools, showing how the NFL, as always, doesn't care where you came from as long as you've got the goods. Also, the NFL drafts on potential as much as production. Roche moving to the Hurricanes and Yeboah to the Ole Miss Rebels didn't change that.Roche, in particular, is an intriguing case since he was the American Athletic Conference defe nsive player of the year in 2019, before he decided to transfer, rather than declare for last year's draft, which also had been a consideration. Roche was in no way a failure at Miami. He got on the field, was third-team all-Atlantic Coast Conference, co ntributed 14.5 tackles for loss. He got invited to the Senior Bowl, reportedly had some impressive practices. So why the sixth round instead of a couple of rounds earlier as some mock drafts had projected? Hard to say except that, for all his high-motor production, Roche, a tick under 6-foot-3 and 243 pounds, isn't the type of edge rusher deemed a high-end athlete. A jump up to the ACC with even a slight dip in production doesn't suggest a jump up again in deeper NFL waters. - Philadelphia Inquirer/Dail y News

The Miami Hurricanes will be without both starting defensive ends for the bowl game. Two days after news broke that starting UM redshirt junior defensive end Jaelan Phillips was forgoing his senior season to enter the NFL Draft, graduate transfer Quincy Roche announced on Sunday that he will opt out of the Dec. 29 Cheez-It Bowl to also begin training for the draft. Roche, who was the 2019 American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year, played in all 10 games for the Canes (8-2, 7-2 Atlantic C oast Conference), tied with Phillips with 45 tackles.Roche had 14 1/2 tackles for loss (tied for sixth nationally) and 4 1/2 sacks, with one pass breakup, five quarterback hurries, a team-leading three fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles. "I love the way he's taken ownership of the team," UM coach Manny Diaz said of Roche this season. Quincy is just so instinctive on the field. His ability to slip blocks and beat tackles and understand where the ball is serves him well." - Miami Herald

Coaches and players alike rave about Roche's athletic prowess. They also rarely fail to mention his gift of sharing his considerable grit and caring through leadership. "From a physical standpoint we knew what we were getting and he's done a great job,'' said Baker. "He's got an innate ability to rush the passer. He's slippery, he's very instinctual, just a really, really good football player. I've been really pleased and proud to watch him grow over the past four, five, six weeks and I still think he's just scratching the surface." Said Diaz: "I love the way he's taken ownership of the team. It's really helped. We always knew he was a really, really good player. It's easy to see [6-5, 266-pound] Jaelan because of his size - like when we had Rousseau. Quincy is just so instinctive on the field. His ability to slip blocks and beat tackles and understand where the ball is serves him well. But he has also tried week in and week out to play more and more in the framework of the defense. "Sometimes you've got to erase habits when you do things for [the previous] three years. We've had this in the past with some of our grad transfers. His willingness to do that has been really encouraging." Last week, besides dominating on the field, Roche ran "up and down the sideline on the offensive side of the bench," Diaz told WQAM, "encouraging those guys when they were stuck for a little bit - not just making himself better but making his teammates better." - Miami Herald

UM's defense, led by Temple graduate transfer Quincy Roche, held the Panthers to four field goals and a touchdown in five trips to the end zone. Roche , last year's American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year, had seven tackles (four for lo sses) and strip sack (with Jaelan Phillips) fumble recovery. Roche had a huge tackle for loss after King's first interception that Pitt returned 34 yards to the UM 12. The TFL came on third-and-1 from the UM 3, which held Pitt to a field goal to make it 14-6 at halftime. "It was my best game as far as the run is concerned," Roche said. "But I still got to clean it up pass rushing. That's where I can improve coming out of this game." If the Canes maintain that attitude and leadership, they should be in a good place heading into Saturday's matchup with Virginia. - Miami Herald

Canes defensive coordinator Blake Baker said Phillips and Roche were "outstanding" in the opener against the Blazers, citing "10 quarterback hits and 16 pressures," and their finesse "especially vs. the run." Diaz explained earlier in the week when revie wing the UAB game, that "UAB was not going to drop back and throw the football." "They were going to run it [and] there was going to be play-action, quick passes in the flats. There were a couple times we saw if we just used our technique a little bit be tter in some of our coverages, [that if] the quarterback [held] the ball for maybe a half second longer he was about to get hit in the back. "It's about being relentless, its about staying after it. The sacks generally tend to come as that happens." Hurr icanes starting middle linebacker Bradley Jennings Jr. said Tuesday that the defensive line's aggressiveness "helped the linebackers play a lot faster and read better." "They were flying off the ball, keeping the O-linemen off me and letting us run and m ake plays." - Miami Herald

The latest college football development has transpired for the University of Miami and its fellow league members. And though it seems minor on the surface, it's likely rolling toward more significant news. The Atlantic Coast Conference announced Monday t hat it "has postponed its virtual ACC Football Kickoff media event until further notice." The "virtual" event, usually held in person on site in Charlotte, North Carolina, was originally scheduled online for July 21-23 in light of the coronavirus pandemi c. Each ACC school has its head coach speak, as well as two high-profile players. Monday's announcement seems to be snowballing toward what almost seems like the inevitable collapse of the 2020 college football season. And that's knowing that major confe rences such as the ACC have already announced they will only play fellow conference members, should the season proceed. - Miami Herald

The Miami Hurricanes kick off "Phase 1" of bringing athletes back on to campus Monday with the first wave of athletes gaining access to campus facilities for voluntary workouts. Miami is welcoming 65 football players, all of whom already live in South Fl orida, as it kicks off its formal "return-to-campus plan" as Florida continues to reopen amid the COVID-10 pandemic "We are excited to start bringing our student-athletes and staff back to campus," athletic director Blake James said in a release. "We hav e worked diligently with our colleagues on campus and at UHealth to ensure that we have a plan in place to bring them back safely and securely and that is consistent with the broader University plan." The Hurricanes' plan calls for baseline COVID-19 test ing, contact tracing, and daily symptom and temperature screening, the university announced. Miami put together its safety protocol with input from university officials, UHealth physicians and administrators, UHealth Sports Medicine, and local and state officials. - Miami Herald

University of Miami graduate transfer defensive end Quincy Roche, the 2019 American Athletic Conference Player of the Year, said he once 'chased down' new UM quarterback D'Eriq King when King played for Houston and Roche was at Temple. The two are now ro ommates and good buddies, which should make for compelling conversations. "Yeah, we had a couple of run-ins during the game," Roche, who spoke to the media after spring practice Friday, told UM broadcaster Joe Zagacki with a chuckle during a WQAM intervi ew just after signing day in February. "I actually got a sack during that game. Very dynamic with his feet, very dynamic with his arm. I'm really glad I don't have to play against him." King, a prolific signal caller who threw for 36 touchdowns and ran f or another 14 in 2018 alone, was asked that day by Zagacki if Roche "got you one time." "I don't remember that," King said. "I'm not going to admit that." That's because according to the official stats, Roche never sacked King. The two actually pla yed against each other twice, in 2018 when King threw for 322 yards and five touchdowns (with one interception) and ran for another 125 yards and a score in a 59-49 loss; and in 2017 when King played receiver and Houston won 20-13. Roche, the 6-4, 235-po und Sports Illustrated first-team All-American who finished last season with 19 tackles for loss and 13 sacks (tied for seventh most in the country), had three tackles each of his games against King, plus one fumble recovery and forced fumble. - Miami He rald
