Former Boise State football standout Avery Williams was named the 2020-21 Mountain West Male Athlete of the Year, the league office announced Tuesday. Williams was the conference's lone Consensus All-American for the 2020 college football season, and he swept his all-conference nominations, garnering first-team All-MW honors at defensive back, punt returner and kick returner, in addition to being named MW Special Teams Player of the Year for the second-straight season and the 2020 Jet Award winner, given annually to the nation's top return specialist. With Williams' selection as MW Athlete of the Year, Boise State has now claimed seven such awards - among male and female honorees - since joining the conference for the 2011-12 season, more than any other school during that time and nearly double that of second-place New Mexico (four). - Lewiston Tribune

Boise State special teams ace Avery Williams is heading to Atlanta. Williams was selected with the pick No. 39 in the fifth round (No. 183 overall) Saturday during the third day of the 2021 NFL Draft. Most experts projected Williams to come off the board in the seventh round, so getting picked in the fifth even caught him a little off guard. "It was unreal to actually realize I was getting the call and to see the Atlanta area code," Williams told the Statesman on Saturday afternoon. "I couldn't be more excited to be part of a high culture organization and to be able to add my energy to it."

This year marks the first time since 2018 that Boise State didn't have a player picked in the first three rounds, but the Broncos have had a player drafted for 12 straight years, dating back to 2010. Williams was the second Boise State player selected this year, following tight end John Bates, who went to Washington in the fourth round. He spent the third day of the draft with a small group of family and friends at the home of local Pastor Mark Thornton, and Williams said he'll head to Atlanta sometime in the next week. - Idaho Statesman

Former Boise State cornerback Avery Williams could be destined for a position change in the NFL. Williams was one of three Broncos who took full part in the school's pro day Wednesday in Boise State's indoor facility, and he showed what he can do in drills specific to defensive backs, running backs and slot receivers. The two-time Mountain West Special Teams Player of the Year, who made highlight reels with his kickoff and punt returns, said several NFL teams have mentioned to him the possibility of becoming a third-down running back. He started every game the past two seasons at defensive back, but he's fine with showing what else he can do. "I want to be the most versatile player in this draft," Williams told reporters on Wednesday. "I can do it all and I'm willing to do it all." - Idaho Statesman

Williams earned consensus All-American and first-team All-Mountain West honors this year after leading the nation in 2020 with four special teams touchdowns.   The Mountain West Conference Board of Directors met last night and approved plans to resume football competition following the Aug. 10 indefinite postponement of fall sports due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Conference’s amended regular-season schedule will begin on Saturday, Oct. 24, with the intent to play eight games. The MW Football Championship Game is slated for Saturday, Dec. 19. Any return to competition is subject to state, county and local approvals.

The Mountain West has partnered with Quest Diagnostics to implement testing protocols across all member institutions. The agreement with Quest delivers frequent testing with rapid results, providing a major step forward for sport competition to resume. The Mountain West will require all football student-athletes, coaches, trainers and other individuals that are on the field to undergo testing three times per week. - Mountain West Football
