 John Raine, Northwestern, Player News

  12/16/20 - FB John RaineSr/2021, Northwestern, 6-1, 231 (DS#6 FB) + More +

2020 ALL-BIG TEN FOOTBALL HONORABLE MENTION (COACHES): John Raine,...In his first season with Northwestern, Raine stepped in and made an immediate impact for the Wildcats at the tight end position. The Miami, Fla. native is tied for fourth on the team with 14 receptions for 122 yards, including a go-ahead receiving touchdown he caught in the 'Cats' 21-13 win over Nebraska on Nov. 7. - Northwestern Football

Even Pat Fitzgerald will admit it: Northwestern tried to keep John Raine a secret. Despite an impressive resume of two bowl wins and nearly 350 receiving yards in his senior season at Florida Atlantic, the tight end was relatively unknown to a Big Ten crowd until this April, when the whispers of a connection between him and the Wildcats first came about. After four years with the Owls, Raine was looking to use his fifth year of eligibility somewhere new. But when he told 247Sports that NU was among his top four - alongside Florida State, USF and Arkansas - it came a bit out of left field. Twelve days later, Raine announced his commitment to the Cats. He'd bypassed schools who had two of his former offensive coordinators at FAU and bought into what Fitzgerald and new play-caller Mike Bajakian were selling up in Evanston.

"We tried to keep John really quiet," Fitzgerald said at a press conference earlier this season. "(I've) probably got to coach the guys up to be a little bit more coy, but John's a really good player. A really, really good player." Six months since his commitment, Raine is quiet no more. Through the Cats' first four games of the 2020 season, he's debuted as one of fellow graduate transfer Peyton Ramsey's favorite targets, pulling in 11 catches for 112 yards and one touchdown. - The Daily Northwestern

FAU's tight end contingent has taken another big loss. John Raine announced on social media that he's entered the transfer portal as a graduate transfer. He recorded 38 receptions for 343 yards and six touchdowns last year en route to the Owls winning the 2019 Conference USA title and 2019 Boca Raton Bowl. "I am thankful for everything, FAU," Raine tweeted on Saturday. "Excited for the next chapter!"

Raine's departure leaves a significant hole in FAU's tight end unit for the 2020 season with the Owls having zero career receptions returning at the position next year. Harrison Bryant, who became the first FAU football player in program history to be a unanimous All-American after leading all FBS tight ends in receptions (65) and yards (1,004), while scoring seven touchdowns last year, used his final season of eligibility in 2019 and has his sights set on the NFL. The Owls have three tight ends on their official roster and received a commitment from one in February that should be able to contribute immediately. Redshirt junior Logan Peterson, and redshirt freshmen Ryan Cameron and Rahmod Smith are expected to return to FAU next season. - Sun-Sentinel

2019 ALL-CONFERENCE USA HONORABLE MENTION (COACHES): TE John Raine, Sr., Florida Atlantic,...Florida Atlantic University football earned five First Team All-Conference USA honors, tied for the most for any team on offense and defense, added a Second Team recognition, and had 10 players pick up 11 honorable mention nods as well. Those six honorees join honorable mention recognition for Deangelo Antoine at both wide receiver and kick returner, alongside fellow offensive members in left guard Desmond Noel and tight end John Raine. Defensive tackle Ray Ellis and defensive end Tim Bonner, linebacker Rashad Smith, and a trio of defensive backs - safety Zyon Gilbert and corners James Pierre and Chris Tooley - were also recognized, as was long snapper Jonathan Sullivan. - Florida Atlantic Football
