Surratt is the fourth key ACC player, the first to play offense, to opt out. The others have been Virginia Tech cornerback Caleb Farley, Miami defensive end Gregory Rousseau and Pittsburgh defensive tackle Jaylen Twyman. Surratt is the second star receiv er nationally to opt out, along with Rashod Bateman of Minnesota. Surratt, one of the ACC's premier playmakers, is a 6-3, 215-pounder who had 66 catches for 1,001 yards and 11 touchdowns in nine games last season. He suffered a season-ending shoulder inj ury at Virginia Tech and missed the final four games.Surratt's breakout season featured a touchdown catch in each of the first six games, culminating with a three-touchdown performance against Louisville. After redshirting in 2017, Surratt had 41 catches for 581 yards and four touchdowns in 2018 - including a one-handed catch that sparked the Deacons' win at N.C. State in Jamie Newman's first start - and a touchdown in the Birmingham Bowl. Though his Deacons career was only two seasons (22 games) , Surratt is tied for ninth in career receiving touchdowns (15). His 1,000-yard season a year ago was only the sixth in program history. - Winston Salem Journal

2020 PRESEASON BILETNIKOFF AWARD WATCH LIST: Sage Surratt, Wake Forest,...During his sophomore campaign, Surratt recorded four games of 150 or more receiving yards. No other Wake Forest player has ever had more than two in a season or four in a career. S urratt had one of the most explosive receiving games in Wake Forest history when he went for 196 yards against Louisville. The cancellation of Wake Forest's spring football practices and shutdown of campus put Sage Surratt back in high school, at least in one sense. Surratt has spent a lot of time in Chapel Hill for the past couple of months, staying with his brother Chazz, a linebacker at North Carolina. Both Surratts were named to the All-ACC first-team last year - Sage at wide receiver, Chazz at linebacker. And so the Surratt brothers have gone back to pushing each other through workouts. "Just working out with him and g etting better every day with him. Pushing each other, he pushes me, I push him," Sage said last month. "It's kinda like old times, I guess you could say."Sage is coming off a season in which he had 66 catches for 1,001 yards and 11 touchdowns in o nly nine games. A shoulder injury in the fourth quarter at Virginia Tech cut his season short, and it's an injury from which he hasn't fully recovered. "I'm close though, I'm a lot better obviously than the last time y'all saw me," he said. Because the C OVID-19 pandemic has seemingly affected all areas of everyday life, especially sports, it's played a factor in delaying Sage's rehab. "It was a little wrench. I had actually gotten back to school to do rehab after spring break. And I was there until ever ything got shut down completely," Sage said. "You've just gotta make the most of it. But our training staff, they've done an extremely good job of keeping everybody updated and working through this." - Winston Salem Journal

Whether a close game or a blowout, Wake Forest always seemed to find a way lately to lose to Florida State. This time, the Atlantic Coast Conference's highest-scoring offense found a way to beat the Seminoles -- by kicking a bunch of field goals. Nick Sc iba kicked a 25-yard field goal -- his school-record-tying fifth of the game -- with 4:18 remaining, and Wake Forest beat Florida State 22-20 on Saturday night. "It stinks that our offense wasn't able to get in the end zone, but I'm glad that I was able to do my part and do my job in order to help us get a great team win, which I think was a big, pivotal win for us," Sciba said. Cade Carney had a 3-yard touchdown run on the second play of the fourth quarter, Sam Hartman was 21 of 38 for 308 yards in his first start of the season and Sage Surratt had seven catches for 170 yards -- his fourth game of the season with at least 150.The Demon Deacons (6-1, 2-1), who average an ACC-best 39.7 points and 540.5 total yards, were held to a season-low point total. Yet they won a game with three lead changes in the fourth, snapped a seven-game losing streak in the series and bounced back from their record-setting 62-59 loss to Louisville. Wake Forest lost its previous two home games against Florida State by a combined 15 points, and lost by 21 in Tallahassee last year. This was just its second victory over the Seminoles since 2008 and first since 2011. "We've had some good wins here over the last 3-4 years, but I thought that was as gritty of a win as we'v e had," coach Dave Clawson said. "Just kind of refusing to give up and finding a way." - Wake Forest/AP College Football
