Could another football team from San Diego make itself at home in Carson? It's one possibility San Diego State - which is growing increasingly frustrated by the process of acquiring the Mission Valley land from the city - says it plans to investigate if it is unable to complete its purchase in a timely manner. John David Wicker, SDSU's director of athletics, said he would explore opportunities throughout Southern California for the 2021 football season before committing to play again in aging SDCCU Stadium.

The largest football venues in San Diego besides the Mission Valley stadium are at Southwestern College, Mesa College and USD. Each seats approximately 6,000 people, roughly 25 percent of what the Aztecs averaged for their six 2019 home games. This explains widening the search to Orange County and Los Angeles, which include several stadiums that would meet the Aztecs' needs. That includes Carson's Dignity Health Sports Park, which hosted the Chargers the past three seasons after the NFL franchise relocated from San Diego. - San Diego Union Tribune

Rocky Long is retiring as San Diego State's football coach after taking the Aztecs to nine straight bowl games. He will be replaced by Brady Hoke, a former head coach at Ball State, SDSU and Michigan, the school said Wednesday. Hoke will be elevated from defensive line coach. The Aztecs were 10-3 last season, capped by a 48-11 victory over Central Michigan in the New Mexico Bowl. Hoke hired Long as his defensive coordinator at SDSU in 2009. Long became head coach after Hoke took the Michigan job before the 2011 season. Hoke was fired after four seasons at Michigan and returned to the SDSU staff last fall. Long was 81-38 and took the Aztecs to a bowl game in all nine seasons. That extended the school-record streak to 10 after Hoke took them to the Poinsettia Bowl in 2010. SDSU won 10 or more games in four of the last five seasons, and also won three Mountain West Conference championships under Long. Long, who turns 70 on Jan. 27, was 65-69 in 11 seasons as head coach at New Mexico. Hoke was 31-20 at Michigan and 13-12 at SDSU. - AP College Football

On the season, Thompson is tied for the league lead and ranks fifth in FBS with three fumble recoveries, while ranking in a tie for eighth in the MW in passes defended per game (0.92).   Redshirt freshman Carson Baker threw for the go-ahead score in his first career start and Tariq Thompson had a strip-sack fumble recovery and an interception for San Diego State, which beat BYU 13-3 Saturday night in a matchup of former conference rivals. SDSU (9-3) rebounded from a loss at Hawaii that cost it the Mountain West Conference West Division title and a spot in the league's championship game. BYU (7-5) had its five-game winning streak snapped and lost to SDSU for the first time since 2005. The Cougars had beaten the Aztecs six straight times, including in their final regular-season matchup, in 2010 before leaving the MWC and going independent. BYU beat SDSU 23-6 in their most recent encounter, in the 2012 Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego.

The teams didn't come close to recreating their wild, high-scoring matchups in the wacky Western Athletic Conference. Ty Detmer famously rallied BYU from a 28-point third-quarter deficit for a 52-52 tie in 1991 at San Diego, throwing for 599 yards and six touchdowns. Baker, who played at nearby Helix High, had never taken a college snap before getting the start in place of senior Ryan Agnew, who's out with an injured left calf. Baker completed 19 of 24 passes for 172 yards and a 25-yard scoring pass to tight end Daniel Bellinger. BYU's Zach Wilson threw for 316 yards, completing 31 of 53, but overall had a tough night against SDSU stingy defense. He was intercepted twice and lost one fumble. - San Diego State/AP College Football

Tariq Thompson had an interception and a pass breakup in the closing minutes to help San Diego State beat Weber State 6-0 on Saturday night in the season opener for both teams. Redshirt freshman Matt Araiza made a 34-yard field goal late in the second quarter and a 29-yarder early in the fourth. It was SDSU's first shutout since beating Hawaii 55-0 on Nov. 5, 2016. The Aztecs defense allowed 154 total yards, including 35 rushing, and just five first downs. Weber State, which came in ranked No. 8 in the STATS FCS poll, went three-and-out six times, crossed midfield only once and punted 10 times. Jake Constantine completed 21 of 31 passes for 119 yards.

Jordan Byrd, who finished with five carries for 50 yards, had back-to-back runs of 13 and 15 yards before Araiza's first field goal. Ryan Agnew ran for 14 yards on third-and-9, hit Daniel Bellinger for a 12-yard gain on third-and-8 and then scrambled for a first on third-and-6 to set up the second. Dwayne Johnson had 12 tackles, including 1 ½ for losses, for San Diego State. - AP College Football
