Air Force coach Troy Calhoun spent time as an NFL assistant, and while he couldn't speak to any team's specific evaluation plans this year, he would expect as a general rule that teams will be scouring film from 2019 and earlier as they set their draft b oards. "This is going to have to be a year where you're going to go to other seasons, I think, for any prospect," Calhoun said. "There's some that you're going to be able to pull from this year. And hopefully there's going to be a good bit (to come)." In considering Laufenberg as an NFL prospect, Calhoun noted his movement, strength and power that he's developed in his lower body. His speed could make him suited for roles on special teams such as kickoff return or field goal as well, the coach noted. "T here's upside, too," Calhoun said. "In a lot of ways, his best days, even physically, are in front of him." - Colorado Springs Gazette

Air Force will be without preseason All-American offensive guard Nolan Laufenberg on Saturday as the result of COVID-19 contact tracing, The Gazette has learned. Laufenberg has not tested positive for the coronavirus, but his exposure through an academy class to a cadet who tested positive led to the protocols that will keep him from traveling to San Jose State. "To ensure the protection of cadet athletes' medical privacy, the academy will not comment on test results," an Air Force spokesman said. The 6 -foot-3, 315-pound Laufenberg, a Castle Rock native, was named a preseason second-team Walter Camp All-American this past summer and is on the Outland Trophy Watch List. On Tuesday the Mountain West released a video of the top five offensive linemen in t he conference, and Laufenberg occupied the top spot. - Colorado Springs Gazette

The NCAA's decision to grant an extra year of eligibility for fall athletes will not impact Air Force cadet-athletes. Friday's ruling was intended to provide aid amid uncertainty caused by the coronavirus, with some teams choosing to play seasons and oth ers postponing fall sports until the spring. This allows athletes an extra season of eligibility regardless of how many competitions their school is able to play during the 2020-21 school year.At Air Force, however, cadets will still graduate in e ight semesters and move on to active duty service, regardless of their NCAA eligibility status. The only athletes who would be impacted would be those granted specific medical turnbacks or other "stops" to their time for issues, such as family hardships, that would extend their time at the academy beyond the typical four-year framework. The NCAA's Division I Board of Directors also announced it would explore hosting scaled back fall championships in the spring, provided it could do so safely. That could impact Falcons sports such as volleyball, cross country and soccer. However, football's championships are handled by the College Football Playoff and not directly by the NCAA. - Colorado Springs Gazette

One of Nolan Laufenberg's aspirations for 2020 came to fruition on Thursday, more than two months before the start of the season. The Air Force left guard was named a preseason second-team All-American by the Walter Camp Football Foundation, becoming the first Falcon to earn Walter Camp All-American honors since Carlton McDonald in 1992. A first-team Mountain West selection as a junior, the Castle Rock native told The Gazette in February that national recognition was the next logical step for him. "All- American is the goal," he said. "But my mind doesn't need to be on stuff like that. I'm just trying to get better and working. I think they'll come if I stay focused." - Colorado Springs Gazette
