Navy's Brigade of Midshipmen gave the University of Houston an earful during Saturday's game and, apparently, one text message after. "The cadets were talking a whole bunch of mess," UH linebacker Grant Stuard said after the 37-21 win. "One of them texte d my phone somehow after the game." Asked if Navy possibly used the National Security Agency (NSA), which is located less than 30 minutes from Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, to obtain his number, Stuard chuckled. "I don't know what they did," he sai d. Saturday's game was the first on the road for the Cougars during the coronavirus pandemic. The crowd was limited to the Brigade of Midshipmen, the student body that numbers about 4,400. "We haven't been in enemy territory yet, so that was fun for us," Stuard said. "We embraced that. We canceled the noise and just went out there and played." Stuard did not reveal what the text said. - Houston Chronicle

Linebacker Grant Stuard will be the first UH player to ever wear No. 0 in a game after the NCAA's rule change that allows players to wear that number. Back in 1972, linebacker Bubba Broussard attempted to wear the game. A few days before the season opene r, SWC director of officials Cliff Speegle informed head coach Bill Yeoman that only numbers 1 through 99 were allowed under NCAA rules, according to an account in the Chronicle. At the same time, linebacker Charles Evans had attempted to wear "00." Brou ssard instead wore No. 2 and Evans returned to his old No. 59. Stuard, a senior team captain, said he chose to wear No. 0 because it's the number of his favorite basketball player, Russell Westbrook. "Honestly, I always wanted to wear No. 0," Stuard said . "When 0 became available I just felt like that was for me." - Houston Chronicle

Houston coach Dana Holgorsen says he had never given out a game ball before handing one to defensive back Grant Stuard in the locker room on Saturday. Stuard had 15 tackles, including a touchdown-saving effort to stop a 58-yard run by UConn's Kevin Mensa h in the Cougars' 24-17 win over the Huskies. Stuard caught Mensah on Houston's 4-yard line, leading to goal-line stand that preserved a 17-10 lead. Houston (3-4, 1-2 American) had just taken that lead on a 58-yard-touchdown pass from Holgorsen's son Log an to Jeremy Singleton. "You've gotta make them snap it again," said Stuard. "If it's one yard, a half a yard, they've still got to get that yard. They've still got to get that touchdown. And our defense prides itself on playing every single play, regard less of the situation."The younger Holgorsen threw for 123 yards and had just 37 yards passing before finding Singleton wide open down the left sideline. "I thought he did fine," Dana Holgorsen said of his son, a walk-on freshman making his first start. "He's not fazed on the sidelines. It's not too big for him. He's not wide eyed. He's been there for 19 years now. He's used to me yelling at him." Houston (3-4, 1-2) stretched its lead with a late 13-play touchdown drive that ended with a 2-yard r un from Bryson Smith. - Houston/AP College Football
