Ragin' Cajuns running back Elijah Mitchell announced Sunday he will enter the 2021 NFL Draft. Mitchell, a fourth-year senior from Erath High, follows in the footsteps of the other half of UL's senior running back duo, Trey Ragas, who declared the same Thursday. A Senior Bowl invitee, Mitchell opted to turn pro rather than use the extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA to all FBS players because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Mitchell ran for a season-high 164 yards and two touchdowns including the game-winner in overtime during a victory in September at Georgia State, and had 127 yards and a TD on 19 carries en route to winning MVP honors in UL's Dec. 26 First Responder Bowl win over UTSA. - Daily Advertiser

Elijah Mitchell's 2-yard touchdown run with 1:13 remaining gave Louisiana-Lafayette a 27-20 victory over Arkansas State on Saturday. Mitchell set up his winning TD on the previous play with a 21-yard run. The six-play, 61-yard drive took just over a minute and came after Arkansas State's Layne Hatcher found Brandon Bowling up the middle for a 47-yard score. A conversion pass tied the game with 2:24 on the clock. Trailing 6-0 at halftime, ULL's Levi Lewis avoided a rush and sprinted up the middle for a 33-yard score. The Ragin' Cajuns added another third-quarter touchdown when Lewis tossed the ball to Dontae Fleming who went around left end for a 52-yard TD. Early in the fourth quarter, Arkansas State's Jamal Jones ran for a short TD but a conversion pass failed and the Wolves trailed by two. Kenneth Almendares then extended ULL's lead with two field goals Lewis threw for 244 yards for ULL (6-1, 4-1 Sun Belt), which has won three in a row. Lincoln Pare had 121 yards rushing for Arkansas State (3-5, 1-4), which has lost three straight. - AP College Football

His performance was his 11th career game with over 100-yards and his ninth career game with two or more touchdowns. The 164 yards mark the second-highest rushing output of his career. The 164 yards is currently tied for the fourth-highest rushing output in the nation this year. His second touchdown was the game winner in overtime, a 12-yard rush. His first touchdown went for 59 yards, his longest rush since going for 65 yards against Arkansas State on Oct. 27, 2018. It was just the second touchdown of 50 or more yards in his career.   Elijah Mitchell rushed for 164 yards, including the winning touchdown in overtime, and No. 19 Louisiana-Lafayette beat Georgia State 34-31 on Saturday. The Ragin' Cajuns (2-0, 1-0 Sun Belt Conference) were ranked for the first time since 1943 following last week's 20-point win at Iowa State. Louisiana-Lafayette was a 17-point favorite, but trailed 14-7 at intermission and Levi Lewis then threw an interception on the opening drive of the second half. The Panthers (0-1, 0-1) answered by taking a 21-7 lead on Marcus Carroll's 2-yard run, but the lead didn't last long.

Lewis, who completed 21 of 37 passes for 279 yards, rolled left to complete a 4-yard pass for a touchdown that cut the lead to 21-14 midway through the third quarter, and then Mitchell got going. The senior running back burst free down the left side for two long gains; a 59-yard touchdown run that tied it at 21 late in the third, and a 53-yard run early in the fourth that set up Trey Ragas' 2-yard touchdown run. Georgia State tied it at 28-all on Coates' 4-yard run with 7:37 remaining. In overtime, Mitchell ran 12 yards around the right side and was untouched as he crossed the goal line for the final score. He finished with 16 carries. - AP College/Louisiana-Lafayette Football

Louisiana-Lafayette and Appalachian State were among 10 new teams ranked Sunday in first regular-season Associated Press college football poll, which was stripped of the teams not yet scheduled to play a fall season. There was no change at the very top: Preseason No. 1 Clemson received 60 of 61 first place-votes this week. After all Division I teams were eligible to be voted on for the preseason Top 25, the panel of 61 voters was permitted to consider only teams playing in the fall now that the season has started.

That meant preseason No. 2 Ohio State, No. 7 Penn State and No. 9 Oregon, along with six other Big Ten and Pac-12 teams, dropped out of the rankings. The Big Ten, Pac-12, Mid-American Conference and Mountain West have delayed their seasons, but the Big Ten is taking some steps toward a possible mid-October start. With those teams gone, Alabama moved up to No. 2. Oklahoma is No. 3, followed by No. 4 Georgia and No. 5 Florida. Defending champion LSU, with one first-place vote, is No. 6. Among the new teams in the rankings were Sun Belt powerhouses Louisiana-Lafayette at No. 19 and Appalachian State at No. 24. - AP College Football

The proof is rooted is in the same backfield they've shared for a few seasons now. Ragin' Cajun running backs can get their shot at the NFL if they play things right, and Elijah Mitchell and Trey Ragas - slated to get going when UL opens its 2020 season Sept. 12 at No. 25 Iowa State - need look no further than the very room from which they work to be reminded of that. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected their teammate, running back Raymond Calais Jr., out of UL in the seventh round of this year's NFL Draft. And in 2017, after Mitchell had finished his 2016 senior season at Erath High and Ragas was coming off a season in which he redshirted as a freshman at UL, the Jets drafted Elijah McGuire, who played two seasons with New York and spent last year on the practice squad of the Super Bowl-winning Kansas City Chiefs.

"Me and Eli, we talk about it all the time," Ragas, an Archbishop Shaw High product from New Orleans, said when asked about the inspiration he and Mitchell get from Calais. "That's somebody in our own room who got drafted. "Eli McGuire, he got drafted. It's showing us it's real - like we've got the power to reach the next level. And it's in our hands." In their heads, too. Because make no mistake: Ragas is not shy to admit that getting an NFL shot of their own is constantly on his and Mitchell's minds. "Just about every day we talk about it," he said. - Daily Advertiser

After extensive discussions and careful deliberation among the Sun Belt Conference Presidents and Chancellors, Athletics Directors, SBC COVID-19 Advisory Panel, medical advisors, and other governance groups, the Sun Belt Conference announced today that its football season will begin over Labor Day weekend. Sun Belt member institutions have focused since June on a safe return to athletic activities. We believe this timetable will allow for the healthy integration of the entire campus community for each Sun Belt member.

The 2020 Sun Belt Conference football season will be comprised of an 8-conference game schedule with an option for each member to add as many as four non-conference opponents, beginning with Week Zero. The Sun Belt will host a football championship game on December 5 between the East Division and West Division champions. If necessary, the date of the championship game may be adjusted. - Sun Belt Football

Louisiana-Monroe and Cal Poly remain on track to open the 2020 college football season at Malone Stadium despite the unknowns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. ULM athletic director Scott McDonald told the News-Star no scheduling changes are anticipated at this time. Kickoff between the Warhawks and the Mustangs is set for 7 p.m. Sept. 5. "I started visiting with (Cal Poly's) athletic director back in March when the storm clouds first appeared for all of us. We've been in contact throughout this whole period and they do plan to report to practice and play the game in September," McDonald said. "Obviously, things can change. If we've learned nothing over this time, it's that things change, but all you can do is keep those lines of communication open."

Speculation that the game would not be played began when the California State University System, which includes Cal Poly, announced its schools would continue administering online classes through the fall semester. Despite some reports to the contrary, the CSU system is not moving to a virtual-only format and will offer some in-person courses. Cal Poly began voluntary offseason in mid-June. - The News-Star

While some schools elsewhere in the country are cutting sports teams to address budget concerns, UL is not considering eliminating any of its intercollegiate programs, Ragin' Cajuns athletic director Bryan Maggard said. Akron of the MAC announced Thursday that is cutting its men's golf and cross country and women's tennis teams, and on Friday MAC-member Bowling Green announced it was eliminating its baseball program effective immediately "as part of a plan for a $2 million reduction to the operating budget of the intercollegiate athletics department." The MAC is one of the NCAA's Group of Five Conferences for football, as is the Sun Belt Conference, to which UL belongs. Asked by The Daily Advertiser on Friday if UL was planning anything similar, Maggard said, "No." That confirms what a UL spokesman told The Advertiser in late April. UL sponsors football, basketball, baseball, softball, women's volleyball, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's track-and-field and cross country, men's golf and women's soccer. - Daily Advertiser
