AJ Parker, Kansas State, Player News

  01/03/21 - CB AJ ParkerSr/2021, Kansas State, 5-11, 182 (DS#52 CB) + More +

AJ Parker won't take advantage of an extra season of eligibility. Parker, a fifth-year senior defensive back at Kansas State, announced Saturday he was moving on from Manhattan, turning his attention toward preparing for this year's NFL draft. Parker revealed his decision in a letter posted to his personal Twitter account. Parker played in nine of K-State's 10 games this fall, totaling 39 tackles (3.5 for loss) to go along with an interception and four pass breakups. The interception came in the team's win at TCU in October, which he returned 37 yards for a touchdown. - Manhattan Mercury

Senior defensive back AJ Parker didn't travel with the Wildcats for Saturday's game. Parker, who injured his ankle in the second quarter of last week's win over Kansas, was day-to-day all week. When K-State departed Manhattan on Friday, Parker stayed behind. With Parker unavailable, Will Jones stepped in at nickelback. He notched four tackles (three solo, one assisted) in Saturday's loss. Parker began the season at cornerback and shifted to nickelback during K-State's first open date. He moved to the spot beginning with the Wildcats' come-from-behind win at Oklahoma last month, and remained there in the subsequent three games (Texas Tech, TCU and KU). Though he sat out Saturday, Klieman said earlier this week the team felt "pretty good that it's not going to be a long-term injury." Ironically, Parker suffered an ankle injury against KU in 2019. That turned out to be far more serious, though, as he missed the rest of the season after undergoing surgery to repair a fracture. - Manhattan Mercury

For the second year in a row, Kansas State's AJ Parker left the Sunflower Showdown early. For now, his status is unknown. "(Doctors) said he was not going to be available for the second half," K-State head coach Chris Klieman said during his postgame press conference. "It was 34-7, and I said, 'That's fine." Klieman said the Wildcats will "find out more probably Sunday or Monday" regarding Parker's injury. Last season, he suffered a season-ending ankle injury during the Wildcats' 38-10 win in Lawrence. On Saturday, Parker just before the end of the second quarter of K-State's 55-14 victory at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. Parker's injury came on a play that ultimately didn't count, as KU was assessed a false-start penalty. He limped off the field with the help of team trainers; Parker appeared to be favoring his left leg. Parker, who started at nickelback, had three tackles at the time of his injury. - Manhattan Mercury

AJ Parker already has worked through the range of emotions one deals with during an injury. Frustration. Loneliness. Depression. Now, he's feeling differently - eager and enthusiastic. Parker, a rising senior cornerback at Kansas State, saw last season end prematurely after he fractured his ankle in the team's 38-10 win at Kansas on Nov. 2. Parker's rehab is on schedule, according to cornerbacks coach Van Malone. "As we were in our workouts, he would do some things," Malone said during a teleconference Wednesday. "So I thought he was progressing along well. ... He did participate at different times in our morning workouts."

Parker started the first eight games of the 2019 campaign at corner prior to his injury. At the time he went down, Parker had a team-high three interceptions, a total that had been tied for second most in the Big 12. He ended the season with 28 tackles (2.5 for loss) and five pass breakups to go along with the three interceptions, numbers good enough to earn him an All-Big 12 honorable mention accolade from the conference's coaches. While Malone conceded that Parker is doing well working on his own - because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, K-State's campus is shut down, preventing Parker and the rest of the Wildcats' players from visiting with coaches, trainers or the medical staff - the coach said it didn't compare to the type of care and treatment the senior would have received at the football facility. - Manhattan Mercury
