Charles Snowden, a lightly recruited prospect who turned into an impact player at Virginia, has elected to pass up his final season of eligibility and make himself available for the 2021 NFL Draft. Snowden suffered a broken ankle against Abilene Christia n in UVa's eighth game of the season and was unable to play in the Cavaliers' final two games. "To coach [Bronco] Mendenhall and his coaching staff, thank you for giving me an opportunity," Snowden, one of the team captains, said on Twitter. "They took a chance on me, a basketball player with zero football offers and pushed me well beyond what I was capable of." Charles Snowden's father, Chuck, confirmed that his son completed his graduation requirements in 3 1/2 semesters, including summer work. University of Virginia senior linebacker Charles Snowden has decided to forgo his last season of eligibility and declare for the 2021 NFL Draft. The Silver Spring, Maryland native made the announcement via Twitter on Sunday afternoon. Snowden played in f ive games this season, tallying 30 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, 1 sack and 3 pass break ups. His season ended after breaking his ankle during the Abilene Christian game. During his career, Snowden exhibited unrivaled leadership ability which led to him being named a captain and top defensive player for the Cavaliers. UVa linebacker Charles Snowden served as a leader all season. The NFL prospect was arguably the Cavaliers' best defensive player when he suffered a season-ending injury against Abilene Christian. While Snowden couldn't take the field for Senior Day, that didn't stop the Wahoos from honoring their captain. Simpson decided to wear No. 11 on Saturday to honor the injured linebacker and delivered a dazzling 73-yard kickoff return while wearing the number. "I asked Charles if I could play for him, and he sai d he loved the idea and then I asked Coach Mendenhall and he approved of it, so I'm thankful for both of them," Simpson said.After the victory, Snowden broke the rock to celebrate the win. "I didn't know how to pay tribute to him and thank him any more than allowing him to do that in front of his peers," Mendenhall said. Mendenhall acknowledged Armstrong's elite performance at quarterback, but he felt the need to give Snowden the chance to break the rock after the team's Senior Day win. The award goes to the best linebacker in college football, and Snowden is one of 16 semifinalists. Before suffering his inju ry, Snowden tallied 44 tackles, including 10 tackles for loss and six sacks. After a slow start to the season, he caught fire in October. Virginia linebacker Charles Snowden will miss the rest of the season with a broken right ankle. Snowden's father shared the news on social media Saturday night, and UVa head coach Bronco Mendenhall shared Monday that Snowden underwent surgery on the inju ry, knocking him out for the year. The recovery is expected to take about six months. Snowden could return next season for a final year with the Wahoos due to NCAA eligibility relief, but he may instead decide to turn pro and prepare for an NFL career. H e'll make that decision in coming weeks and months. "Charles' influence on our program has been breathtaking in terms of maturity and growth, and in a lot of ways his own maturity and growth has matched that of the program," Mendenhall said. "He came in as tall and thin and a basketball player, and he's blossomed into a future NFL player with amazing leadership skills and a captain of our team in a four-year period."Snowden suffered the injury of the first quarter of Saturday's victory over Abile ne Christian. He missed the rest of the game, returning to the sideline for the second half wearing a cast and using crutches. His loss removes an on-field leader and NFL-caliber linebacker. D'Angelo Amos, Charles Snowden and Nusi Malani all left the win with injuries. Snowden's looked the most serious, as he appeared to injure his right ankle in the first quarter. He came onto the field in the second half, sitting on the sideline with crutc hes and what appeared to be a cast on his right lower leg. Defensive lineman Jowon Briggs entered the transfer portal earlier this week, leaving the defensive line especially thin with Richard Burney out for the season with health issues. Malani adds imp ortant depth along the line when healthy. Safeties Joey Blount and Brenton Nelson both missed Saturday's win as they attempt to recover from injuries plaguing them for most of the fall season. Charles Snowden put together one of the most dominant individual performances of any ACC player this weekend. The linebacker finished with 10 tackles, four sacks and a forced fumble in the UVa football team's 44-41 upset victory over North Carolina on Sa turday. The stellar showing earned Snowden ACC Linebacker of the Week honors. "I had gotten off to a slow start this year and now to finally be producing and making plays, it feels great," Snowden said after the game. "Sacks always are a great thing." On the season, Snowden's sack tally sits at five. All five of the sacks have come in the past two games. After recording 22 tackles and one tackle for loss in UVa's first four games this season, Snowden posted 18 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss and five sack s in the team's previous two contests. On Thursday, the redshirt sophomore was named Virginia's starting quarterback for the start of the 2020 season after competing for the job with Mississippi State graduate transfer Keytaon Thompson. Just one day after winning the starting QB job, Armstron g was named a team captain. The Maxwell Football Club announced its watch list for the Chuck Bednarik Award, which is given annually to the best defensive player in college football. Two Wahoos made the watch list, and they'll look to become the first UVa winner of the award since its inception in 1995. Both of UVa's players are on the watch list come from the linebacker position. Senior Charles Snowden and junior Noah Taylor made the list. In total, 18 ACC players earned spots on the watch list, including six linebackers from the conference. There are 90 players on the list and 20% of them come from the ACC. That's the most of any conference.Interestingly, Virginia is the only program in the nation to put two linebackers on the list. Snowden finished last season with 72 t ackles, 11 tackles for loss and five sacks. Taylor racked up 57 tackles, including an impressive 13.5 tackles for loss and seven sacks. Voluntary workouts for returning University of Virginia football players will begin July 5, the school's athletic department announced Friday. Required activity will begin July 15 and allow players to work for no more than eight hours, including weight t raining, conditioning and film review. That will increase to 20 hours from July 26-Aug. 8, with fall camp to start one day later. There will be an acclimatization period before a 25-day fall practice period gets under way. Standing 6-feet-7-inches tall and weighing 235 pounds, Snowden possesses a blend of speed, size and length that makes NFL scouts drool. He finished the 2019 season with 72 tackles, including 11 tackles for loss and five sacks. Long arms aren't just good for tackling - he's broken up 15 passes in the past two seasons. A menace in passing lanes and a disruptor in the backfield, Snowden has started in all 27 of Virginia's games in the past two seasons. Athlon Sports named him a preseason second team All-AC C player entering the 2020 season. He's a star on the gridiron. A rising senior, Snowden's physical traits should thrill NFL teams. Standing at 6-foot-7 and weighing 235 pounds, Snowden is a beast of a man. His frame still looks lean, and Snowden hopes to add a few pounds before the start of the next college football season. "Ideally I'd like to start the 2020 season in the low 240s," Snowden said. "Maintaining weight during the season has always kind of been my thing, so getting to the low 240s, that way, at the end of the season I can still be around 240." Snowden 's length and size led to a good junior season. He finished with 72 tackles, including 11.5 tackles for loss and five sacks. He uses his length well to get into passing lanes. He recorded 11 passes defended as a sophomore. At his size, those numbers show he's capable of turning physical traits into on-field production. A senior season similar to his junior campaign should put Snowden squarely in the NFL Draft discussion. If the coronavirus pandemic has made a mess out of 2020 college football preparations, Virginia football player Charles Snowden isn't sure that the Cavaliers will suffer. "I know coach [Bronco] Mendenhall loves consistency," said Snowden, an outside line backer coming off a breakout season in 2019. "I know this definitely throws him off a bit. I also know he loves challenges and creating chaos. Although he doesn't have any control over it, I think he's excited to see how we react." Snowden was in South F lorida when he learned that spring classes had been canceled as a result of the coronavirus and that classwork would be handled online."Initially, I thought it was going to be for a couple of weeks," he said. "I've been home, finding different way s to kind of work out, and talking to my coaches and teammates because they're trying to figure it out, too." Snowden had heard from team nutritionist Randy Bird earlier in the day Wednesday. "I personally don't have a strict diet," said Snowden, listed at 6 foot 7 and 235 pounds. "No weight is kind of bad weight for me right now." Physically, Snowden would like to weigh 240 pounds when the season comes around. "My sack number wasn't anywhere close to where I wanted it to be," said Snowden, whose five s acks ranked him third on the team behind Jordan Mack and Noah Taylor. Bronco Mendenhall isn't big on fiery halftime speeches. So, with his team trailing visiting Old Dominion by 10 points at halftime, the Virginia coach's message to his players was simple. "All I said was, 'Now that that's over, we'll start playing,'" Mend enhall said. His defense certainly did. Linebacker Zane Zandier returned an interception 22 yards for a touchdown, part of a dominant defensive second half, as the 21st-ranked Cavaliers rallied past the Monarchs 28-17 on Saturday night to remain undefeat ed. Old Dominion's failed fourth-down try in its own territory set up Virginia's go-ahead score, a 7-yard touchdown run by Wayne Taulapapa with 10:16 to go for a 21-17 edge.After the game, Monarchs coach Bobby Wilder defended the decision. "We cam e in here to win and that is how we tried to play today," he said. The Cavaliers (4-0) are off to their best start since opening 5-0 in 2004. The Monarchs (1-2) have lost two in a row, both to in-state ACC opponents. They lost to Virginia Tech two weeken ds ago, a year after stunning the Hokies in Norfolk. Linebacker Charles Snowden finished with a game-high 15 tackles, including two of the five sacks on Old Dominion quarterback Stone Smartt. He echoed Mendenhall's sentiment that the halftime mood was mo re about getting reset than getting motivated. "Just kind of gathering ourselves in the locker room, settling down, taking a breather," Snowden said. "Wasn't a lot of 'rah-rah.'
