After a breakout junior season, Indiana wide receiver Whop Philyor contemplated declaring for the NFL draft. But Philyor was convinced to stay after a conversation with his mother, Holley Mouling. "Nobody in my family ever graduated college before," said Philyor, who is on track to earn a degree in liberal arts. "Nobody ever made it to college, so me and my sister, we wanted to be the first people to graduate from college, so that's probably the main reason. "The speedy Philyor also wanted to spend more time with his teammates and to try to do something special in his final year with the Hoosiers. Coming off a 2019 season that included 70 catches for 1,002 yards and five TDs, Philyor won't be sneaking up on teams this season.

Philyor was the focal point of Tennessee's game plan in the Gator Bowl last January, and the Vols held the second-team, All-Big Ten wide receiver to just one catch for 1 yard. IU co-offensive coordinator and receivers coach Grant Heard has challenged Philyor to read and understand coverages designed to stop him. "I feel comfortable about him knowing our playbook and what we ask him to do from our end," Heard said. "Now I'm putting pressure on him to know more defenses. What they're trying to do to take him away, to take certain plays away, why we're calling certain stuff, just to open his mind up and become a more well-rounded football player." The 5-foot-11, 177-pound Philyor said he's ready to face more double-teams, and expects there to be a trickle-down effect to the rest of an IU offense that ranked second in the Big Ten in passing last season. Philyor had three games in which he had 10 or more catches and four games in which he had 100 or more yards receiving. - Herald Bulletin

Indiana athletics has made clear to its student-athletes that they will not lose their scholarships if they choose not to compete due to COVID-19 concerns. In an email Tuesday from outgoing athletic director Fred Glass and incoming AD Scott Dolson, athletes received an outline of what to expect as they return to campus. It was stressed that workouts are currently "strictly voluntary," but it's also an athlete's choice whether or not to compete at all. "If notwithstanding the protocols of the Restart Plan you are unwilling to participate in intercollegiate athletics because of concerns about COVID-19, we will continue to honor your scholarship," the email reads. "This is your decision based on medical considerations. If after discussing your concerns with the Chief Medical Officer you do not want to participate in intercollegiate athletics, we will still honor your scholarship."

COVID-19 continues to spread throughout the United States, with case numbers spiking significantly in several states. IU's football team returned to campus earlier this month, along with the men's and women's basketball programs. In an initial round of 187 tests, IU reported that no one tested positive for COVID-19. But that's not been the case everywhere. At Clemson, 37 football players have tested positive. A week ago, it was reported more than 30 members of LSU's football team were quarantined following positive COVID-19 results. - Indianapolis Star/News

Citing unfinished business, Philyor announced in January he would return for his senior season after a breakout junior year that included 70 catches for 1,002 yards and five TDs. In becoming the seventh IU receiver in school history to post a 1,000-yard season, Philyor earned second-team All-Big Ten honors from coaches and third-team All-Big Ten honors from the media. The speedy, 5-foot-11, 177-pound Philyor got open early and often last season, posting 10 or more catches in three games. He finished the year third in the Big Ten in catches per game at 5.8. How Philyor adjusts to being more of a focal point to opposing scouting reports will determine his effectiveness as a senior. New offensive coordinator Nick Sheridan will need to continue to find creative ways to get him open as the Tampa, Fla., native could end up facing more double coverage compared to last season. - Herald Bulletin

2019 ALL-BIG TEN SECOND TEAM (COACHES): WR Whop Philyor, Indiana,...Philyor, who also netted third-team honors from the media, is second in the Big Ten with 6.3 receptions per game (T-22nd nationally) and third with 91.0 yards per game (T-21st). He sits third in the conference with 69 catches (T-31st) and fourth with 1,001 yards (T-24th) to go along with five touchdowns. The Tampa native became the seventh Hoosier with 1,000 receiving yards and his 1,001 yards are seventh on the single-season list. Philyor ranks sixth on the program's single-season receptions chart and his four 100-yard games share sixth. One of 10 FBS players to record three double-digit reception games in 2019, his 489 yards after the catch top the Big Ten (21st nationally), according to PFF College. Scott owns 845 yards (5th in the Big Ten) on 178 carries (5th) with 10 rushing touchdowns (T-4th) and a 4.7 average. He is also fourth in the conference with a 76.8 average per game. - Indiana Football
