Conference USA announced its 2020 All-Conference football teams today, as selected by the league's head football coaches. Nine schools placed at least one player on the first team, with Marshall producing a league-high nine selections, followed by C-USA Champion UAB with six and WKU with four. Marshall and UAB each had the most combined first and second-team members with 12, followed by Louisiana Tech with nine, UTSA with seven and WKU with six.

The nine Marshall first team selections include five from the Thundering Herd offense, three on their defense and one from special teams. Freshman QB Grant Wells leads C-USA in passing yards (1,977) and passing touchdowns (18), junior RB Brenden Knox has 887 rushing yards and nine rushing TDs, with both operating behind an offensive line led by seniors Josh Ball and Cain Madden and alongside redshirt senior TE Xavier Gaines. - Conference USA Football

Grant Wells threw three touchdown passes, Brenden Knox ran for two scores and No. 16 Marshall pummeled Massachusetts 51-10 on Saturday. The game was added to Marshall's schedule last month after several other opponents had previously pulled out due to the coronavirus pandemic. Marshall (6-0) continued to produce a season-long balance on offense that keeps opponents guessing. Knox scored on first-quarter runs of 45 and 14 yards and got nearly all of his 118 yards in the first half. It was his fifth straight game over 100 yards.

Massachusetts (0-2), in its fourth season as a Bowl Subdivision independent, has 22 true or redshirt freshmen on its depth chart. Wells took advantage of a UMass secondary that consisted entirely of freshmen and sophomores and completed 21 of 30 passes for 228 yards. Massachusetts freshman Will Koch moved the ball at times in his first career start, but it was a lot to ask a young quarterback to do against the nation's sixth-best defense. Both of the Minutemen's scoring drives came in the first half with the help of some trickery. - AP College Football

Brenden Knox rushed for 101 yards and caught one of redshirt freshman Grant Wells' two touchdown passes to lead No. 22 Marshall to a 20-9 victory over pandemic-depleted Florida Atlantic 20-9 on Saturday. Marshall (5-0, 3-0 Conference USA) managed enough offense to hold off the pesky Owls (1-1, 1-1). FAU brought 57 players on its first trip of the season, just above the mandated minimum of 53 available scholarship players during the pandemic. The Owls even held a third-quarter lead before Marshall scored the final 13 points. With FAU missing both of its starting offensive tackles due to the virus, the Owls were limited to 234 yards of offense. Marshall came up with another solid performance in stopping the run. FAU quarterback Nick Tronti, who ran for 94 yards in the Owls' only other game on Oct. 3, was held to minus-45 yards on 11 rushes and was sacked five times. The Thundering Herd entered Saturday third in the nation in rush defense at 68.5 yards per game. Marshall trailed in a game for the first time this season after Vladimir Rivas kicked a 43-yard field goal to put FAU ahead 9-7 midway through the third quarter. - AP College Football

FAU (1-0) knows from firsthand experience how dangerous Brenden Knox can be. In the Owls' lone conference loss last year, Marshall's redshirt junior running back ran for a career-high 220 yards and two touchdowns on 23 attempts. And that performance wasn't an aberration. Knox received first-team All-Conference USA recognition for the 2019 season after recording 1,387 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns on 270 attempts (5.1 yards per attempt). He already has seven rushing touchdowns (tied for third-best in the nation) in addition to 455 yards on the ground on 93 attempts (4.9 yards per attempts) this season entering FAU's matchup with Marshall (4-0, 2-0) on Saturday in Huntington, W.Va. "He's as good of a back we'll see this year," FAU defensive coordinator Jim Leavitt said about Knox. "He's got great vision, balance and explosion. He's one of the better backs I've seen in a long time. And then you got the big offensive line - they're big, strong and [Knox] finds those creases. It's a challenge." With Marshall's offense being built around its rushing attack, the Owls have emphasized the importance of tackling to slow down Knox, who easily breaks through tackles with his 6-foot, 223-pound frame. "You're not going to have arm-tackles bring [Knox] down," Leavitt said. "He's just too big, strong and explosive. You're going to have to get a number of people to him and keep him from hitting creases. He gets through them so fast. You're going to have to wrap him up." - Sun-Sentinel

Marshall head coach Doc Holliday always says that road games in conference require teams to pack their toughness with them. On Saturday afternoon, Holliday watched his Thundering Herd team get tough in big situations, using a goal-line stand at the end of the first half and registering six sacks to help propel a 35-17 win over Louisiana Tech at Joe Aillet Stadium. "When you hold somebody to 7 yards rushing, you played great defense," Holliday said. "Obviously we did that, and offensively we had some guys that stepped up there and played - they probably didn't think they were going to play, but they played extremely well."

While the defense continued its strong play that has led the team early in the season, the Marshall offense featured a balanced attack with quarterback Grant Wells and running back Brenden Knox each seeing success. Wells finished the game 19 of 24 for 222 yards with two touchdowns and one interception while Knox carried the ball 32 times for 125 yards and two scores - his second straight multi-score game. Knox said the key to Marshall's offensive success was being patient and taking what was given. The Herd parlayed that into a 13-of-16 performance on third down. "There were a lot of jabs, a lot of jabs," Knox said. "We just kept it going like it was supposed to." - Charleston Gazette

While Knox enjoyed the weekend festivities, he's much more focused on the future. He feels his best days are ahead of him. "It was pretty cool, I can't lie, but there's so much room for much more," Knox said. "I'm definitely grateful - you know, a great thing - but when you know there's room for much more, that's all you can really think about." Part of those plans for Knox include helping the Herd in its work for a Conference USA title, which takes the next step at 6 p.m. Saturday, when the team heads to Ruston, Louisiana, to take on Louisiana Tech in a battle of undefeated cross-divisional opponents. The game will be aired on CBS Sports Network. Knox said celebrations from last week are over. Now it's time to get back to work preparing for an opponent that he said will challenge the Herd. To get a second road win in league play, Knox said the Herd must continue the efforts from last week. "Take in your fundamentals, carry that in every week," Knox said. "Take your toughness, which is something you probably hear with everyone in our program. Just remember what you're fighting for. It's going to be four quarters." - Charleston Gazette

Brenden Knox ran for three touchdowns and Marshall's defense stifled Western Kentucky in a 38-14 win on Saturday night. Knox's 45-yard touchdown run within the first minute of the game set the tone. He added two more scores - on runs of 1 and 9 yards in the last 2:14 of the first half - and the Thundering Herd (3-0, 1-0 Conference USA) led 28-0 at intermission. Defensively, Marshall stuffed the Hilltoppers by holding them to 294 yards of offense and 2 of 12 on third down conversions. Despite not committing a penalty, the Hilltoppers (1-3, 1-1) lost three fumbles. Kevaris Thomas had a 2-yard touchdown run and 148 yards passing, including a 26-yard touchdown to Dalvin Smith with six seconds left. - AP College Football

Marshall coach Doc Holliday and his young quarterback saw the two injured Appalachian State players on the ground after a collision. So they knew what to do next. Holliday called for redshirt freshman Grant Wells to run toward the side of safety Ryan Huff's replacement. Wells scored on a 12-yard run late in the third quarter, Marshall's defense came up with stop after stop and the Thundering Herd beat No. 23 Appalachian State 17-7 on Saturday. Marshall (2-0) defeated a ranked opponent for the first time since winning at No. 6 Kansas State in 2003. It also was the Thundering Herd's first victory over a ranked opponent at home since 1976. Appalachian State (1-1) squandered a couple of late opportunities and was held scoreless in the second half. "For our program, it's huge," Holliday said. "I thought our guys accepted that challenge. I thought the defensive play was special."

Wells had a lackluster game but put together consecutive big plays that made the difference late in the third quarter. He threw a 67-yard pass down the middle to a wide open Xavier Gaines to the Appalachian State 12. Huff and Mountaineers cornerback Shaun Jolly were shaken up on the tackle. Holliday told Wells to keep the ball on the next play, and Wells trotted into the end zone untouched. "We called that play knowing they had a new safety in the game," Holliday said. Wells finished 11 of 25 for 163 yards after throwing four TD passes in his debut two weeks ago, a 59-0 win over Eastern Kentucky. - Marshall/AP College Football

For Knox, the focus is never on what he's done; instead, it's about what he hasn't done or what he feels he doesn't do well. Knox credited that demeanor to a coaching staff that accents areas of needed improvement while keeping him grounded and hungry for more. He showed no hesitation when asked about the areas where he can improve in his second full year as the starting running back for the Herd. "Route-running, little things, you can always get better at pass protection," Knox said. "Tedious things as a running back. The end goal is to be complete, so whatever gets me closer to that goal."

With a new quarterback behind center for 2020, Knox knows his presence is likely elevated for the Herd's success. Knox also knows that other teams will devise game plans to take him away from the offense as best as possible by trying to find weaknesses in his game and force the Herd into those situations. Therefore, the goal over the next four weeks is to train as hard as he's ever trained to be ready for whatever is asked of him in 2020. For Knox, it's one thing to make it to the top. It's another to stay on top. "You've just got to take it where it's at," Knox said. - Charleston Gazette

Brenden Knox scored on a 1-yard run in overtime to cap a 146-yard day and Marshall edged Florida International 30-27 on Saturday. Knox ripped a 24-yard run up the middle on the previous play, his 32nd carry, to set up his winner. The Panthers had taken the lead on a 35-yard field goal by Jose Borregales on the opening possession of overtime. His 41-yarder with 21 seconds left, which capped a 12-play, 48-yard drive in the final two minutes, sent the game to overtime. Marshall (8-4, 6-2 Conference USA), had a 17-7 lead entering the fourth quarter. Anthony Jones closed a 75-yard drive with a 9-yard TD run on the first play of the period.

On the next snap, Alexy Jean-Baptiste recovered a fumble on the Marshall 22. The next play James Morgan dumped the ball over the middle to Tony Gaiter IV, who took it to the end zone for a 21-17 FIU lead. Isaiah Green found Xavier Gaines wide open in the end zone for an 18-yard score that gave the Herd a 24-21 lead with 2:16 remaining. Gaines had a rushing and receiving touchdown for the Thundering Herd, which would play for the Conference USA title if East Division leader Florida Atlantic falls to Southern Mississippi later in the day. Morgan threw for 236 yards and Gaiter had nine catches for 107 for FIU (6-6, 3-5). - AP College Football

Isaiah Green and Brenden Knox accounted for two touchdowns apiece and Marshall handed Louisiana Tech its first Conference USA loss 31-10 on Friday night. Green was 14-of-26 passing for 213 yards with an 18-yard touchdown pass to Willie Johnson and added a rushing touchdown. Knox rushed for 113 yards on 25 carries and scored twice. The Herd (7-3, 5-1), who won their fifth straight, moved into a tie with Florida Atlantic atop the East standings. The Bulldogs (8-2, 5-1), who hadn't lost since falling to Texas in their season opener, are a half-game ahead of Southern Mississippi in the West. Louisiana Tech opened the scoring with a 5-yard run by Justin Henderson, but a field goal and the touchdown pass put Marshall on top in the second quarter. In the final minute of the first half, Kevin Murphy recovered a fumble by Brady Farlow at the La Tech 1 and Knox punched it in with 40 seconds to go for a 17-7 lead. The Bulldogs kicked a field goal in the third quarter but that was all they could manage. Marshall piled up 405 yards of offense, while La Tech was held to 261. - AP College Football

OCT 21/WEEK 8 CONFERENCE USA OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Marshall sophomore RB Brenden Knox ran 23 times for a career-high 220 yards (the nation's second-highest rushing total last weekend) and two touchdowns in Marshall's 36-31 win at Florida Atlantic. The final score came on a 17-yard run with 36 seconds left to propel the Thundering Herd past the Owls. It was the sophomore's second touchdown of the evening after plunging in from one yard out in the waning seconds of the first half. Of those 23 carries, none went for negative yardage. He also caught one pass for four yards. The Columbus, Ohio, native has scored a rushing touchdown in five of the last six games and has 11 rushing scores in his 12 career games.

His 220 yards ranks eighth on the Marshall list for most rushing yards in a game and he became just the fifth Marshall player with multiple 200-yard games. His 226 all-purpose yards at Florida Atlantic are the most by a Marshall player since Tyre Brady had 248 yards at NC State in 2017. Knox is No. 4 nationally for rushing yards this month (423) and ranks No. 7 nationally in rushes of 10+ yards this season with 24. - C-USA Football

Brenden Knox scored the go-ahead touchdown with 36 seconds left in the fourth quarter and Marshall beat Florida Atlantic 36-31 on Friday night. Knox finished with 23 carries for 220 yards and two touchdowns for the Thundering Herd (4-3, 2-1 Conference USA). His game-winning 17-yard TD run capped a 10-play, 77-yard drive and was the fourth lead change of the fourth quarter. Robison scored on a 1-yard keeper to give the Owls (4-3, 2-1) a 24-22 lead with 10:09 left in the game. Less than a minute later, Isaiah Green's 60-yard TD pass to Willie Johnson put Marshall ahead 30-24. Marshall failed on the two-point conversion and FAU took the lead on Malcolm Davidson's 2-yard TD run with 3:36 left. Robison passed for 369 yards. - Marshall/AP College Football

2019 PRESEASON WUERFFEL TROPHY WATCH LIST: Brenden Knox, Marshall, Sophomore, RB,...Knox, a second-team all-conference preseason pick by Athlon, exploded toward the end of 2018, ripping off 578 rushing yards and four touchdowns in the final five games of the season. In fact, his 297 rushing yards in December led all of college football. He averaged 115.6 yards per game in those final five games, which would have ranked No. 8 nationally for the entire season, but his rushing average includes production from all 13 games because he played on special teams. - Marshall Football
