Penei Sewell is the first Oregon offensive lineman selected in the first round of the NFL draft since Kyle Long in 2013. Penei Sewell spent draft night at the family home in St. George, Utah, eating Pizza Hut in front of the television instead of bear-hu gging NFL commissioner Roger Goodell on the stage in Cleveland. Mario Cristobal, the head of the 6-foot-6, 330-pound left tackle's Oregon football family, flew in for the festivities with defensive line coach Joe Salave'a after the Ducks' spring practice Thursday. About an hour into the first round, Sewell was selected by the Detroit Lions with the No. 7 overall pick in 2021 NFL draft."It's the world," Sewell said after realizing his American dream after spending most of his childhood living in a one-bedroom house in American Samoa. "Every time I think of this moment, I go back to that shack on the island with all my family. When we were all in the living room sleeping on that floor in that shack, and now look at us. "I'm in a position to really change my family dynamic and also play at the level I wanted to play my whole life. To be a part of the NFL and the Detroit Lions organization is nothing but a dream come true." - Register Guard

With quarterbacks expected to go with at least the top three picks in the draft and Cincinnati at No. 5, numerous projections have Sewell headed to the Bengals. With Taylor running one of the drills at Oregon's pro day, Sewell admitted to feeling some ne rves at first but said being able to turn to his brother Gabe, a former linebacker at Nevada going through pro day at UO as well, helped. "At the end of the day, football is football for me," Sewell said. "Going out there clear-minded, not really getting those logos and those people's teams get over my head about that, not to overthink about that. At the end of the day, going out there and performing and doing what I do, being between those lines at pro day definitely brought a lot of memories."S ewell felt people forgot about him a little bit after not playing last season and wanted to reaffirm that he's the best offensive tackle in this year's draft. The 2019 Outland Trophy winner and unanimous All-American felt his performance last week did th at but above all, believes his film from albeit just 21 career college games, shows he's the best in class. "Go put on the tape," Sewell said. "Everybody go ahead and watch what I can do and nobody can do what I do in this draft in the offensive tackle r ooms. I bring something totally different to the table and I think people know that. People will say whatever they want to say. All I have to say is put on the tape and watch me work." - The Oregonian

Penn State linebacker Micah Parsons and Oregon tackle Penei Sewell are among 11 players selected to The Associated Press preseason All-America first team who are not slated to play this fall. The team was selected by 47 AP poll voters, who were asked to consider all Division I players - even those who had already opted out of the season or whose teams had postponed football. The results show just how much star power will be missing from this pandemic-altered college football season.Twelve second- team All-Americans will also not play in the fall, including quarterback Justin Fields from defending Big Ten champion and preseason No. 2 Ohio State. The Big Ten, Pac-12, Mid-American and Mountain West conferences have decided to try to play football in the second semester. As of now, Fields has given no indication that he won't be with the Buckeyes if they do. Same goes for Sewell, the Outland Trophy winner and potential top-five NFL draft pick, and Oregon teammate Kayvon Thibodeaux, a sophomore defen sive end. - AP College Football

Sporting events in Oregon are likely to be without large crowds through at least the end of September. Oregon Gov. Kate Brown announced Thursday the steps the state will take as it begins reopening next week. Brown asked those planning large gatherings, such as concerts, festivals, sporting events and conventions, to cancel or significantly modify plans for anything scheduled through at least September. That is likely to impact the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers, the Portland Timbers of the MLS, and Ore gon and Oregon State college football. While the NBA and MLS have no firm plans of a restart yet, Oregon and Oregon State both have three home games scheduled in September. - AP College Football

The University of Oregon offensive line recently participated in a Zoom meeting. Former Ducks offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz was invited to join, and the current UO lineman had a chance to ask questions to a guy who played eight NFL seasons. Penei Sewe ll had questions, of course. I'm told he usually does. But what's surprised me, and some others, is that Sewell also has some critics. In fact, when I told Oregon coach Mario Cristobal about a recent discussion about it he said, "Critics? Last I checked, he's projected No. 2 overall." Cristobal was talking about the 2021 NFL Draft.I realized some point early last season that Cristobal isn't wired like most football coaches. I told anyone who would listen that Oregon's coach might be thrilled, for example, if one of his players won the Heisman Trophy. But he'd be even more jazzed about a Ducks' offensive lineman bringing home the Outland Trophy. By the end of the season, most of us knew Sewell was going to win the award annually given to the best interior lineman in the country. "The No. 1 thing," Schwartz told me after that virtual meeting, "he wants to be better. He wants to be great." - The Oregonian

Rece Davis is "more optimistic" than his ESPN colleague about the 2020 college football season in terms of the coronavirus pandemic. Last week, "GameDay" analyst Kirk Herbstreit made headlines when he questioned whether there would be a college football season in the wake of COVID-19. On Monday, Davis joined "First Take" and was asked about Herbstreit's opinion. "I'm far more optimistic and more hopeful than Kirk's quote there at this point," Davis said Monday. "I just think that's a little bit prematur e at this juncture while offering the caveat that there is so much unknown out there. Kirk's right based on everything I've read in terms of medical experts, in terms of the vaccine. I'm hopeful and optimistic that with so many people working on this tha t we're going to have, at least, some kind of treatment, some type of break over the next several weeks that will, perhaps, make it far more feasible to have football. At this point, I'm far more optimistic. Might there be adjustments in the schedule? Mi ght things change a little bit in terms of how the business is conducted? Sure."Last week, Herbstreit said he would be "shocked" if there would be football this fall. "I'll be shocked if we have NFL football this fall, if we have college football. I'll be so surprised if that happens," Herbstreit said. "Just because from what I understand, people that I listen to, you're 12 to 18 months from a (coronavirus) vaccine. I don't know how you let these guys go into locker rooms and let stadiums be fill ed up and how you can play ball. I just don't know how you can do it with the optics of it." - Birmingham News
