Samuel, the son of former UCF and NFL standout Asante Samuel, played at powerhouse Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas before signing with FSU. He picked FSU over Miami, bought into former coach Willie Taggart's system and most recently was one of the few bright spots for a talented defense that struggled during coach Mike Norvell's first season. Samuel was known for being vocal in practice and banding together with fellow class of 2018 recruits, known as Tribe18, trying to set higher expectations for th e program. Samuel has 30 tackles, six passes defended and three interceptions during eight games this season. He has 97 career tackles, 29 passes defended and four interceptions during three seasons. - Orlando Sentinel

Corner Asante Samuel Jr. has been absolute ball hawk for FSU's secondary, with three interceptions already this season after snagging just one as a sophomore. He's the leader of a mid-tier pass defense that, interestingly, is coming off its best game. Th e Seminoles held Notre Dame to 201 passing yards, although game flow played a role in that number. - Raleigh News Observer

Through two games, the Florida State defense knows it isn't living up to expectations. Entering the season, the Seminoles' defense was expected to be the strength of the team led by a number of projected future NFL players. That hasn't been the case, how ever, as a number of standout individual performances haven't saved a unit that has allowed 477.5 yards per game to opposing offenses so far this season. "As a team, I feel like we just have to go out there and play more physical and with more effort," F SU cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. said. "We didn't play to the Florida State standard effort-wise and physicality-wise. We just have to go out there and basically play with pride." Whatever metric you consider, it has been a tough start to the season for t he FSU defense. In two games, FSU's defense has fallen 17 spots in ESPN's SP+ defensive rankings from 33rd to 50th.FSU hasn't impressed in many defensive categories, but their third-down defense has been especially startling. Even though FSU force d Georgia Tech into an average third-down distance of 8.9 yards and Miami faced an average third-down distance of 5.9 yards, the Seminoles have allowed their first two opponents to convert 59.8% of their third downs. That's the worst mark in the ACC and tied for 65th out of 72 FBS teams that have played this season. "On third downs it really was just missed assignments and guys not winning the 1-on-1. You've got to win your 1-on-1 and know what you are doing," Samuel said. "I feel like if we did those t wo things, the (Miami) game would have gone a lot more different." - Tallahassee Democrat
