Johnny Johnson III was the last Oregon Ducks player to leave the field after the Fiesta Bowl. It could have been the final college game for the wide receiver. "Seeing that confetti go in the air and it wasn't us celebrating, I think that sat with me the wrong way," Johnson said. "I was taking everything in for my decision and ultimately that helped make my decision because I didn't want to end that way as a Duck. I want to do great things here." Johnson, who had 19 receptions for 267 yards and two touch downs in the shortened 2020 season, chose to come back for one more. Even among Oregon's super seniors he's one of just three to have spent their entire career at UO.And he's the most accomplished of the group, boasting 114 career catches for 1,61 7 yards and 14 touchdowns, while emerging as one of two Pac-12 players with 100 receptions, 1,500 receiving yards and 10 TDs. "Johnny's played so much ball," receivers coach Bryan McClendon said. "His attention to detail and his attitude and his approach to every single day is really, really, really great to have. Not just for my room but for the team in general." Johnson has played all of the receiver roles for the Ducks and that versatility is part of what allows him to stay on the field regardless of Oregon's personnel package. Having a defined spot could be preferable, but Johnson said he'll "play any of them." Ducks cornerback Dontae Manning called Johnson a "technician" and said he's the toughest matchup in practice. "He breaks everything down," Manning said. "No wasted movement, no false step, gets in and out of the breaks, good hands, great speed." - The Oregonian

Oregon wide receiver Johnny Johnson III has 114 career receptions for 1,617 yards and 14 touchdowns. He's closing in on Oregon's top-10 career lists in all three categories. The next generation of Oregon wide receivers has already arrived on campus and a couple of touted prospects started flashing their talents during the spring game. But super senior Johnny Johnson, who was named to the preseason Biletnikoff Award watch released Thursday, is still the headliner of the group entering fall camp. Johnson enters the 2021 season with 114 career receptions for 1,617 yards and 14 touchdowns. He needs 20 catches, 431 yards and four touchdowns to crack Oregon's top-10 list in all three categories, The Ducks also return fifth-year senior Jaylon Redd and third-y ear sophomores Mycah Pittman and Devon Williams. - Register Guard

Johnson had 19 catches for 267 yards and two touchdowns last season, which was a significant drop on a per game basis and he didn't have a 100-yard game. How much of that was due to the short season, new starting QB, new offense or relatively low number of plays? All of the above. Johnson came back for a fifth year and he's going to be a major contributor, whether at X, Z or Y. "It's good to have good dudes in the room and more athletes that you got to compete with to ensure that you got to earn your jo b; it's not just given to you," Johnson said. "That's something I'm going to have to do when I get to the next level, deal with competition. That's something I thrive off of and it's going to continue to get this room better." - The Oregonian

Johnny Johnson thought playing in the Fiesta Bowl would be the perfect ending to his career at Oregon. The homecoming was supposed to be a full-circle moment for the senior wide receiver from Chandler, Ariz. Johnson led the team with four receptions, but the Ducks ended up on the wrong end of a 34-17 loss to Iowa State on Jan. 2 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz. While watching the Cyclones celebrate their victory over the Pac-12 champions, Johnson started to think seriously about using the extra year of eligibility being offered by the NCAA. "The decision was weighing heavy on me, whether to come back or not," Johnson said Thursday. "Just seeing that confetti go in the air, and it wasn't us celebrating, I think that kind of just sat with me the wrong way. I was just kind of taking everything in for my decision. "Ultimately, that helped make my decision because I didn't want to end that way as a Duck. I want to do great things here." Johnson, along with fellow super senior Jaylon Redd, are leadi ng what they believe could be a special wide receiver unit in 2021. - Register Guard

Oregon has needed to overhaul its receiver corps for the past few seasons and the pieces to make that happen are coming in with Franklin, Thornton and Brevard. Spring will give an early indication if the freshmen will challenge for prominent roles this f all but they're likely going to have a chance to contribute immediately regardless. Johnson and Redd are atop the depth chart but both have plenty to improve before they leave college. Johnson was probably underutilized last season but is certainly capab le of producing consistent numbers and he is probably Oregon's best blocking receiver. Williams and Pittman both need to have a full season of games to showcase their skills to the max. - The Oregonian

Oregon senior Johnny Johnson is expected to be Tyler Shough's No. 1 wide receiver this season. Of course Johnny Johnson watched Justin Herbert steal the Monday Night Football spotlight. Oregon's leading returning wide receiver knows what it feels like fo r Keenan Allan, Mike Williams and the other skill players the Los Angeles Chargers' rookie quarterback is featuring on the highlight reel. "I've watched every game," Johnson said of Herbert's hot start in the NFL. "He's going to be a 10-plus (years) guy in the league, and I'm excited to see what he can do in the future."Right now Johnson is focused on finishing his four-year career with the Ducks. As other key players opted out of the 2020 season to focus on turning pro, the senior announced publ icly that he was playing. With Herbert taking the snaps last season, Johnson finished with a team-high 57 receptions for 836 yards and seven touchdowns to bounce back from a sophomore slump. "It was hard seeing some of my brothers leave. That was tough," Johnson said. "I always wanted to play for four years here. That was something I wanted to do." Oregon will have a new starting quarterback for the first time since Herbert established himself as the No. 1 QB during the 2016 season. When the Ducks were sent home in March due to the pandemic, Johnson spent a lot of time working out with fellow Arizona import Tyler Shough, the favorite to win the job. "He has a heart for the game and he gets guys together and gets guys juiced and ready to play," Johnson said of Shough after Tuesday's fall camp practice. "I'm excited to see what he can do this year. He's doing a great job right now. We'll see how this thing goes." - Register Guard

Not only is Johnny Johnson III coming off a junior season in which he led the Ducks in almost every receiving statistic, he's the No. 3 returning receiver in the Pac-12. That's a credit to Johnson, but also underscores the scale of overhaul Oregon and th e Pac-12 at large will be going through this offseason. Johnson led the Ducks with 57 catches for 836 yards and seven touchdowns last season. That's third among returning Pac-12 receivers in yards and tied for second in touchdowns. In other words: Johnso n is firmly in the conversation for preseason all-Pac-12 honors. For a player who entered last season with questions as to reliability due to drops in 2018, that's a huge jump. If Johnson is going to take the next step both for the Ducks and to improve h is NFL prospects, he's going to have to become a 1,000-yard receiver. - The Oregonian
