Michigan defensive end Kwity Paye has found a new home after being drafted No. 21 overall by the Indianapolis Colts in the first round of the NFL Draft, and now his mother can retire. Paye was the second defensive lineman taken in the three-day draft tha t began Thursday night. His main goal has been to take care of his mother, Agnes, who fled with her family from the Liberian civil war and relocated them in 1999 to Rhode Island, where Paye was raised. "That was my goal my whole life," Paye told reporter s late Thursday. "Seeing how she worked her whole life, that made me work harder." During a brief television interview after his selection, Paye announced his mother is "done working." "She's retired," he said, his mother beside him looking overjoyed. - Michigan Live

Michigan continues to rotate a few defensive linemen in the absence of its two star defensive ends Aidan Hutchinson and Kwity Paye. Hutchinson is out for the season with a lower-leg injury, while Paye missed his second straight game last Saturday and is out indefinitely. "Questionable is a word everybody understands," Harbaugh said of the injured group. "As of Monday, guys are still working through things, and we'll see where we are later in the week." Harbaugh isn't scheduled to talk with reporters the rest of the week, so any further updates likely won't come until just before Saturday's kickoff. Asked Monday about McGrone and Hawkins specifically, Harbaugh said, "We have some updates. Nothing to release at this time." - Ann Arbor News

The 2020 season is sure to present its own set of challenges, with the Wolverines set to debut a new starting quarterback and four new starters up front. Growing pains could be in the forecast again for the offense. But the defense, particularly up front , is emerging as a potential strength of the team, head coach Jim Harbaugh said Monday night. "Kwity Paye and Aidan Hutchinson, two wow-tremendous players," Harbaugh said on the "Inside Michigan Football" radio show. "They're having great camps. When I k ind of look over, that's what I see the identity for our defense."Paye and Hutchinson, both defensive ends, have received heavy praise from coaches and teammates this offseason for their improved play and smash mouth style. Hutchinson, a junior an d third-team all-Big Ten selection in 2019, says he's trying to become "a matchup nightmare." Paye, a second-team all-conference selection, has made a concerted effort to improve his edge rushing. "Just those two talented, great, high-effort type of play ers," Harbaugh continued, describing the depth of Michigan's defensive line. "Caro Kemp and Chris Hinton, and now Donovan Jeter also is really, really surging and doing great. Just a natural, great football player." - Ann Arbor News

Michigan players continue to participate in voluntary practices four days a week, preparing for the program's version of the NFL combine on Oct. 24 at Michigan Stadium so players can be tested by NFL scouts. Defensive end Kwity Paye has his NFL future to consider while he continues to go through practice. Like everyone else in the program, he's curious what the Big Ten's next move will be. If the season is pushed to January, there's a strong likelihood many upperclassmen across the Big Ten who have NFL aspirations will leave to prepare for the draft. "I'm just waiting on like what decision the Big Ten and the NCAA's going to make because we don't know what's going on yet," Paye said Thursday. "I would have to obviously go back and talk to my mom and se e what would be the best choice for me and my family."I'm not all too worried about making the big decision just yet, just because I'm trying to enjoy my last couple months with the boys if these are my last couple months with them." Before the de cision to postpone was made, Paye said he paid close attention to what was going on with the Big Ten. Would the conference delay? Would it play on? "But they kept giving false hope," Paye said. "I stopped getting my hopes up and stopped looking into all that stuff. Just been doing what I had to do here to help the team. When they make their decision, I'll be ready." - Detroit News

Michigan defensive end Kwity Paye has never wavered when it comes to his desire to play football this fall despite all the uncertainties. The Big Ten on Wednesday announced a 10-game composite schedule although there are no guarantees the season will be actually played because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Michigan opened preseason camp on Friday and the Wolverines' season begins Sept. 5 against Purdue at Michigan Stadium. Paye briefly considered leaving for the NFL after last season and most certainly will be a coveted prospect in next year's NFL Draft. He remained in Ann Arbor after all on-campus activities were suspended in mid-March and worked out on his own focused on the fall. "I'm playing. If we have a season, I'm playing," Paye told The Detroit New s Thursday night. "I see a bunch of other guys opting out. I came back for a reason. I came back to play." - Detroit News
