An old friend will be joining Trevor Lawrence in Jacksonville. The Jaguars on April 29 selected Travis Etienne with the No. 25 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, pairing the former Clemson running back with his old quarterback. The Jaguars took Lawrence earlier in the night with the first pick. The selection marks the first time in program history two Clemson players were selected by the same team in the first round, and the first time a quarterback and running back from the same program were selected in the first round. Together, Etienne and Lawrence will look to help turn around a Jacksonville team that went 1-15 in 2020. Many believed Etienne was destined to be a first- or second-round selection in last season's draft, but he elected to return to Clemson for his senior season and put the finishing touches on one of the most prolific careers in ACC history. - Charleston Post Courier

Etienne worked out at Clemson's on campus pro day Thursday and was timed at 4.41 in the 40-yard dash by NFL scouts. (Wisconsin's Jonathan Taylor was the only running back faster at last year's NFL Combine. He was drafted in the early second round.) The speedy Etienne said he thinks he's worthy of being a first-round pick. "I'm one of the best skill guys in the draft. I'm able to do it all. I feel like I add that component to take teams to the next tier," Etienne said. "I feel like me being in the game, I just possess a lot of things that are God-given that most guys don't possess."

Etienne, who was named an All-American in 2020, averaged 7.2 yards per carry over the course of his career. As a senior this past season he rushed for 914 yards and had 588 receiving yards. The Louisiana native, who played in an option offense in high school, leaves Clemson as a complete back who can beat you with a handoff, out of the backfield or on special teams. "You see on the film I'm able to be out there three downs," Etienne said. "I'm able to play special teams. So just being able to impact the team each and every down I feel like is what makes me different and worthy of the first round." - The State

One year after many NFL draft analysts expected him to bolt for pro dollars, Travis Etienne is moving on. The Clemson running back on Friday officially declared for the 2021 NFL draft. He leaves the Tigers as the program's all-time leading rusher (4,952 yards). Etienne earned ACC Player of the Year honors in 2018 and 2019. He surprised many fans and media members by returning to Clemson in 2020 for his senior year. He could have returned in 2021 as the NCAA granted all 2020 players an extra year of eligibility. - Charleston Post Courier

Etienne was awarded the O'Rourke-McFadden Trophy, given annually to the best player in the Clemson-Boston College game. The senior set a pair of records Saturday, becoming the ACC's career leading rusher (4,644 yards) and scoring a touchdown in his FBS-best 42nd career game. With Lawrence out, offensive coordinator Tony Elliott challenged Etienne to be more of a leader Saturday; Elliott said Uiagalelei needed to feel a confident presence next to him in the back field. Etienne hadn't carried the ball more than 17 times in a season before Saturday, but against the Eagles he had 20 carries and seven catches for 140 yards. Expect Clemson to use Etienne heavy again next weekend. - Charleston Post Courier

After the Tigers' 42-17 win over the Hurricanes, reporters asked Trevor Lawrence which Tiger would get his vote after four games. Without hesitation, he admitted that though he may be the favorite, his running back's impact and stats give him a better case, "I don't even know if you can argue that (with) the way he's playing right now," Lawrence said. "I'd vote for him. He's special. I think he's going to keep getting better because that's the type of guy he is. He loves playing ball, learning from his mistakes and getting better every week." Etienne has scored a touchdown in an FBS-record 39 consecutive games and has already tallied 392 yards and four scores. He's also added 245 yards and a touchdown as one of Lawrence's top options in the passing game with 17 catches. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

Trevor Lawrence threw for three touchdowns and rushed for another as No. 1 Clemson proved once more who's boss in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 42-17 beatdown of seventh-ranked Miami on Saturday night. Travis Etienne rushed for 149 yards and two scores, including a 72-yard burst down the left sidelines as the Tigers opened 4-0 for a sixth straight season. This is was billed as an ACC showdown where the Hurricanes (3-1, 2-1 ACC) could prove the swagger had truly returned to "The U." Instead, Miami's offense was suffocated by the Tigers (3-0 ACC) and held without an offensive touchdown until the fourth quarter.

Hurricanes quarterback D'Eriq King came in alongside Lawrence as the ACC's dominant, dynamic playmakers. The Houston transfer, though, was swarmed by Clemson all game and completed just 12 of 28 passes for 121 yards and his first two interceptions of the season. Miami entered as the ACC leader in offense at 499 yards a game. It was held to 210 and never truly came close to challenging the Tigers. Clemson got out fast with touchdowns on its first two drives, on tight end Braden Galloway's 24-yard catch and a 2-yard run by Etienne. - AP College/Clemson Football

Saturday, UVa's defense put Clemson in third-down situations. The Tigers faced 11 third downs in the first half. Unfortunately for Bronco Mendenhall's squad, the Tigers dominated in those situations. Clemson went 7-for-11 on third down in the opening 30 minutes and 3-for-5 on third downs with at least nine yards left to go. The Tigers scored two of their three first-half touchdowns on third down. Travis Etienne turned a third-and-1 carry into a 16-yard touchdown scamper after spinning off a Virginia tackler. The rushing touchdown put Clemson up 10-0 at the end of the first quarter. The Tigers started the scoring with a 47-yard B.T. Potter field goal after Lyn-J Dixon returned the opening kickoff past midfield. "I think he's one of the best players in college football," UVa safety Joey Blount said of Etienne. "He showed his toughness today. I have a lot of respect for him and what he does. There were a lot of plays that we left on the field that we had him in a position that we wanted, but using his athleticism, his game, he got out of the situations that we had him in." - Charlottesville Daily Progress

Remember when Travis Etienne's hands were a weakness? Early on in his career, Etienne struggled with drops, but he has gotten better and better at catching the ball each season. The senior hauled in five passes for 114 yards and a touchdown against Virginia, finishing with more receiving yards than rushing yards (73). Clemson entered the matchup with the game plan of getting Etienne the ball in space as often as possible, and the Louisiana native made the most of his opportunities, averaging 9.8 yards per touch. - The State

The Tigers' star running back was given one opportunity to return a punt against The Citadel and he made the most of it, going 44 yards to set up a Clemson touchdown. Etienne is as dangerous as anyone in college football with the ball in his hands, and he showed why during his punt return, juking and dodging would-be tacklers. Etienne could be a nightmare for opposing special teams coaches to defend against, and he could also help his draft stock by showing off his versatility. It's "something he's been working on really all fall camp and kind of earning my trust a little bit. I wanted to get him a live rep. It's just another opportunity for him to touch it," Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said. "He did a great job. That's a good option for us moving forward to know he can not only be a kick returner guy but a punt return guy as well if we need him. That puts a lot of pressure on people." - The State

Trevor Lawrence and top-ranked Clemson racked up another dominating win against Wake Forest. Lawrence threw for 351 yards and combined for three touchdowns, and No. 1 Clemson continued its dominance over Wake Forest with a 37-13 victory night in the season opener for both teams. Trevor Etienne ran for 102 yards and a touchdown for Clemson, which improved to 70-5 since the start of the 2015 season under coach Dabo Swinney. Clemson has now outscored Wake Forest 152-19 over the last three seasons, holding the Demon Deacons to just one touchdown. The Tigers have won 12 straight against Wake Forest. - AP College Football

Etienne was named the ACC Player of the Year each of the past two years. And with uncertainty surrounding this season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, going home to Louisiana and training while not being on a college campus might have been the best decision for his future. But it was actually when Etienne was back home this summer that he made the decision to play college football this fall. He decided that sitting out while his teammates and friends played was not something he could do. "Just going back home and seeing my nieces and my little brother, them playing sports and just seeing how pure the game was, the reason why we get into sports. Just remembering why I started playing football and why I fell in love with the game and just getting back to that," Etienne said of what factored into his decision.

"Just seeing my brothers out here grinding, it just forced me to want to get better and grind with them and just be the best player I can be." Etienne's love for the purity of college football is also partly why he surprised many by announcing in January that he would return for his senior season. "I wouldn't have any regrets because it was my decision to come back. I definitely came back and got better on the field, off the field, mentally, physically, spiritually. I've learned so much more coming back, and I was able to show my little brother and my family there's just so much more things to life than money," Etienne said. "If the season doesn't happen I'm still grateful that I came back. No looking back on the decision. I can't change it. So I just made the most out of it, whether we have a season or not." - The State

The Associated Press intends to rank teams if major college football games are played this season. A most unusual season is less than a month away and the preseason AP Top 25 presented by Regions Bank is scheduled to be released Aug. 24, marking the 85th year of its existence. The AP will also release its preseason All-America team the following day. The AP has asked its voters to consider all Division I teams when filling out their ballots, so the preseason poll is expected to include teams from conferences that have decided not to play this fall. After games begin, voters will rank only teams that are scheduled to play. - AP College Football

Clemson's Travis Etienne is closing in on the ACC career rushing record N.C. State's Ted Brown has held for more than 40 years. Officially, Etienne needs 565 yards this season as a senior to surpass Brown's record of 4,602. That's how the record book sees it, anyway. Brown, though, actually gained an additional 399 yards in bowl games during his Wolfpack career, which if counted would make his record tougher for Etienne to break. But those yards aren't counted for Brown even though the yards Etienne has gained playing in three ACC championship games and five College Football Playoff games are counted toward his total.

That's right - the NCAA, and ACC by extension, each counts eight additional games for Etienne that it wouldn't have counted for Brown. Etienne rushed for 625 yards in those eight games. If Clemson makes the postseason this year, Etienne can possibly end his career having played in 11 postseason games that count toward his statistics - almost a full season's worth - while Brown's three bowl game performances don't count at all. Is this fair? And how can this be? Well, it's a statistical oddity of the NCAA's creation that remains a source of debate within college football circles. While some want it fixed, others are against it. - The State

Coach Dabo Swinney on Wednesday night pushed back against critics who question the role Christianity plays in the Clemson football program. In April 2014 the Freedom from Religion group filed a complaint to Clemson, claiming Swinney and his staff had engaged in "unconstitutional behavior" for not creating a clear separation between church and state at the public university. "I always tell everybody, my job is not to save 'em. My job is to win football games," Swinney said during an FCA video call Wednesday. "I've come under fire many times from different organizations and things like that because of my faith. They want me to just shut that off and not be a Christian. "But God says in Ecclesiastes 3:23, whatever you do, you do it with all your heart as if you're working for the Lord."

On Wednesday, Swinney pushed back on "myths" about him, including that he requires players to attend church on a mandatory basis. But he did say he feels responsible to serve the "hearts and souls" of his players. "If I get a young man that comes to Clemson and he's strong in his faith, and he leaves Clemson and I didn't help him grow stronger, shame on me," he said. "If I get a young man that comes to Clemson, and he doesn't know anything, or he's searching, and I don't cultivate that...Shame on me. - Charleston Post Courier

There will be no Clemson spring football game in 2020 and no more practices the rest of the spring. The ACC announced Tuesday morning that all athletic-related activities through the end of the 2019-20 academic year have been canceled because of the coronavirus outbreak. The Tigers completed nine practices, their most recent last Wednesday, before shutting down for spring break. Clemson coach Dabo Swinney was asked about the possibility of COVID-19 altering spring practices following Clemson's pro day last Thursday and said he felt good about what the Tigers accomplished if their spring ended up being over. "We're in good shape," Swinney said.

"A lot of valuable development," he said of what was accomplished during the nine workouts. "We've got 15 midyears and it's a lot of development for those guys. They've been in a lot of meetings. A lot of corrections, a lot of installation. So a lot of just team building. A lot of team meetings and things, the way we build our team. We've gotten a lot of that done...I'm glad we were able to do that." Clemson, which has reached the College Football Playoff five consecutive years, is expected contend for the postseason again in 2020 behind junior quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Tigers star running back Travis Etienne is also back, opting to pass on the NFL to return for his senior season. Clemson will open the 2020 season on Thursday, Sept. 3 at Georgia Tech. - The State

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney believes it's way past time to lighten up on quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Lawrence accounted for four touchdowns, Travis Etienne ran for 212 yards in a record-setting performance and No. 4 Clemson rolled to its 24th straight victory, 59-14 over FCS opponent Wofford on Saturday. Lawrence had three TD passes for a fourth straight game, leading the Tigers to a season-high 702 yards. And Swinney things people should start focusing on that instead of finding fault in Lawrence's play. "He's had about eight bad plays and they just can't let it go," Swinney said. "They can't let it go. They can't forgive him."

Lawrence, the 6-foot-6 long-haired sophomore, gets plenty of forgiveness from his team Tiger fans. He heard outsiders pick at his career-high eight interceptions -- double what he threw during Clemson's 15-0 national championship season a year ago -- and he shrugs it off as the Tigers (9-0) keep winning. "We've used it for fuel," Lawrence said, smiling. Etienne, the reigning Atlantic Coast Conference player of the year, helped the Tigers put it away early with scoring runs of 47 and 86 yards in the first 15:12. Clemson improved to 34-0 against FCS programs. It was the Tigers' sixth straight win over Wofford (5-3), which fell to 1-21 against FBS schools. Etienne became Clemson's first rusher with three 200-yard games in his career. He also surpassed James Davis for Clemson's career record for rushing TDs with 48. Lawrence had TD passes of 35 yards to Amari Rodgers, 22 yards to Tee Higgins and 34 yards to Justyn Ross. Lawrence also rushed for a 2-yard score that put Clemson up 42-0 at the half. - Clemson/AP College Football

Diondre Overton finally got his moment. It came in Clemson's best offensive showing of the season. The reserve receiver, who had only four touchdowns in his previous three seasons, caught three scoring passes to help the fourth-ranked Tigers win their 23rd straight game, 59-7 over Boston College on Saturday night. Travis Etienne ran for three TDs as Clemson built a 38-7 by halftime on the way to their fourth 8-0 start in five seasons. And Overton, part of two Clemson national title teams, at last had a starring role. "Like I told my team, it's just been a long time coming," he said, smiling.

Overton had scoring catches of 22, 63 and 34 yards, nearly equaling his career mark coming in. He finished with a career-best 119 yards receiving as part of what Swinney said was Clemson's most complete game of the season. "I could've transferred, could've left, could've let my team down," Overton said. "But I just kept the faith." Etienne had scoring runs of 3, 4 and 5 yards as the Tigers (6-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) easily extended their program best streak. They jumped on the Eagles (4-4, 2-3) early and never let up -- Clemson had the ball six times in the first 30 minutes and scored each time. "I think the offense set the tone tonight," Swinney said. "We wanted the offense to be fast and efficient and that's what we had tonight." Trevor Lawrence completed 16 of 19 passes for 275 yards with three touchdowns. - Clemson/AP College Football

Travis Etienne ran for a career-high 205 yards and three touchdowns, including one from 90 yards out, and No. 1 Clemson overpowered Georgia Tech 52-14 Thursday night for its 16th straight victory. On an offense filled with stars, it was Etienne who shone brightest for the defending national champions. His 90-yard score tied for the longest rushing TD in Tigers history. Etienne added scoring runs of 14 yards and 48 yards as Clemson opened a 35-0 lead and was never pressed by the Yellow Jackets in the season opener for both Atlantic Coast Conference teams.

It was not the flashy return that most of college football expected out of Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence. The 6-foot-6 sophomore, so poised and polished in leading the Tigers to a 15-0, title-winning season, threw two interceptions in the first half. Lawrence had just four picks all last year. Still, Lawrence had his moments. His hustle after a bad interception knocked defensive back Tre Swilling out of bounds at the Clemson 3, and the Tigers defense kept the Yellow Jackets from scoring. Lawrence opened things with a 6-yard rushing score and threw a perfect pass to Tee Higgins for a 62-yard touchdown. Lawrence finished 13 of 23 for 168 yards. - AP College Football
