2020 ALL-BIG 12 CONFERENCE FOOTBALL FIRST TEAM: OL Samuel Cosmi, Texas,...Cosmi, who was entrenched as one of Texas' starting linemen since the beginning of his redshirt freshman season in 2018, appeared in all 35 possible games for the Longhorns prior to declaring for the NFL Draft, while starting at one of the tackle spots in the last 34 outings. In 2020, he was recognized as a Preseason All-American by the Walter Camp Football Foundation and the Associated Press, among others, in addition to being a watch list candidate for the Outland Trophy. Cosmi led the team this season in total first down/TD blocks, total knockdown blocks and total intimidation/dominant blocks, and entering his final game had only allowed one QB hit, one TFL and one sack. He also received honorable mention as the Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year in Thursday's announcement. - Texas Football

Cosmi is regarded as a first-or second-round pick in the upcoming draft. With Texas essentially eliminated from contention for a conference championship, he turned his attention to preparing for the NFL. LSU receiver Terrace Marshall and Minnesota wideout Rashod Bateman made the same decisions. Noting Cosmi's contributions over the past four years and the degree he will receive next month, Herman defended the lineman's decision on Monday. Herman also said he didn't believe that any of Cosmi's teammates would follow the junior's lead.

"I don't think that sets any kind of example to anybody on our football team because everybody's situation is unique," Herman said. "I want to reiterate the appreciation and gratitude that we have for Sam and his family...We are very, very proud to have had Sam. He's going to be a college graduate, he's going to have his degree from the University of Texas, and the plan is for him to go make us very, very proud in the National Football League." - Austin American Statesman

For Samuel Cosmi, the decision to play this fall was made in January. Eight months ago, the Texas left tackle took to Twitter to announce that he'd return to for his redshirt junior season. He tweeted that it was a dream for both him and his family to earn a degree. He also wanted to chase a championship with his teammates. Cosmi hasn't wavered in his decision. Not even during a pandemic. When asked on Tuesday if he had thought about focusing on the NFL draft instead of a college season that has plenty of unknown variables, he replied, "I haven't thought any of opting out."

"I'm all in right now," he added. "I still see myself as the kid walking on campus and trying to get a spot and figure out what am I going to do and how am I going to get on the field. I still have that mentality. None of this has really hit me. I'm here to play football." Had Cosmi had a change of heart, he wouldn't have been alone. A few players that will likely be chosen early in the 2021 draft won't be playing this fall. - Austin American Statesman

2019 ALL-BIG 12 FOOTBALL SECOND TEAM (COACHES): OL Samuel Cosmi, Texas,...Cosmi, a Humble, Texas native, has started every game at left tackle this season. He, like Shackelford, has played a key role in helping the Texas offense put up record-breaking numbers this season. After the season opener against Louisiana Tech, Cosmi was named to Pro Football Focus' Eckrich National Team of the Week. Cosmi had 47 pass-blocking attempts that game and did not allow a single quarterback pressure, according to PFF. Against West Virginia, Cosmi became the first Texas offensive lineman since 2011 to score a touchdown, as he caught a backwards pass from Ehlinger and ran the ball in from 12 yards out. Cosmi's 12-yard touchdown run is tied for the longest by an offensive lineman in Big 12 history, and is the longest touchdown by a UT offensive lineman since 1947, the start of when the Longhorns' individual stats are available. - Texas Football
