Over the years, he went from a 6-foot-1 running back frame to a defensive tackle's body and reached 371 pounds, his heaviest weight. He is now 355 pounds with a goal to lose 25 pounds. More importantly, after undergoing multiple tests, including stress tests and an EKG, Whittley said he was medically cleared to play football. He said he had passed out once at Oregon State, and then another time while working out at home, which is when he wound up in the hospital. "Everything is good now," he said. Whittley chose Michigan in part, he said, because the Wolverines were the first to contact him after his name appeared in the portal. Michigan needs bulk in the interior of the defensive line and quickly identified Whittley. He shared that first offer, as well as one from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in social media posts.

"Michigan kept in touch and they were consistent," Whittley said. "After I posted my Michigan offer, I got probably 25 more offers, I just didn't post them. I feel like it was piggyback offers, like, 'Oh, we're gonna offer him because they offered him.' Ohio State called me when I committed, like 'You sure you're going to Michigan?' Like, yeah. That was mind-blowing, like dang, you're really only trying to get me because they want me? "Michigan did the background research, they did all the stuff to triple-check, double-check, check my heart stuff situation. They cared about what was going on with me as far as why I wanted to leave, and making sure the place I went was a place I wanted to go." - Detroit News

Defensive tackle Jordan Whittley hasn't played a football game at Oregon State since 2019. He hasn't taken part in an official team practice in more than a year. Why then did Whittley put his name into the transfer portal and immediately find interest? Last week, the 6-foot-1, 358-pound seventh-year senior committed to Michigan. It's not like Oregon State couldn't use a large, athletic player to fill the middle of its defensive line. OSU coach Jonathan Smith says he likes Whittley. But because of weight and health issues, the team's medical staff declined to clear Whittley for practice. Smith said he was "surprised, but not shocked" that Whittley decided to move on.

Whittley came to Oregon State in 2018 as a junior college transfer, and a potential answer to the Beavers' issues along the defensive front. Whittley, who originally signed out of high school as a running back at San Jose State, got down to 324 pounds in 2019 and showed some flashes of a dominant defensive tackle. Injuries limited his playing time, but Whittley vowed prior to the offseason to get in great physical shape and show what he could do for the Beavers in 2020, and perhaps in the NFL in future years. Then came the pandemic. Whittley battled knee injuries, followed by ballooning weight. - The Oregonian

Michigan football has landed another graduate transfer, and this one's in an area of need. Defensive tackle Jordan Whittley announced his commitment to Jim Harbaugh's program on Friday, posting a graphic of himself in a Michigan uniform with the phrase "the big man is coming to the Big House" on it. Whittley, who was listed at 6-foot-1 and 358 pounds, comes to Michigan from Oregon State. He did not play in 2020 and served as a rotational player in 2019, appearing in all 14 games for the Beavers but only starting one of them. In those 14 appearances, Whitley recorded 14 tackles (3 1/2 for a loss), a quarterback hurry and pass breakup. The Richmond, Calif., native was a three-star recruit out of Castlemont High School, where he was a three-time all-conference selection and two-time area all-star game selection. - Ann Arbor News

The seventh-year defensive tackle announced on social media that he plans to put his name in the NCAA transfer portal. Whittley, who received a medical redshirt year of eligibility, never played again. Whittley had physical and health issues, including what he reported on social media as a tumor near his heart. Whittley's weight significantly ballooned over the past two years. He didn't practice during the 2020 season. Whittley was often seen at spring practice, but wearing workout clothes as he trained away from the field with the strength and conditioning staff.
