Washington has pulled out of the Pac-12 football championship game due to COVID-19 issues in the Huskies program, and Oregon will now play No. 13 USC in the conference title game on Friday in Los Angeles. Washington (3-1) announced it was withdrawing fro m the championship game after determining the Huskies did not have at least 53 scholarship players available and did not meet minimum number of scholarship athletes at specific positions. Washington had to cancel its game last weekend against Oregon (3-2 ) that would have determined the Pac-12 North champion due to COVID-19 cases in the program that caused the Huskies to pause practice in the middle of last week. - AP College Football

Elijah Molden had two fundamental reasons to return for his senior season. Of course, Molden - a 2019 first-team All-Pac-12 performer and Walter Camp first-team preseason All-American - could have just as easily opted out, turning his focus instead to th e NFL draft. He could have followed fellow Washington defensive standouts Levi Onwuzurike and Joe Tryon out the door. He could have prioritized a professional future, citing the rampant uncertainty surrounding the sport. Instead, when the Pac-12 announce d a seven-game fall football season last week, Molden tweeted, "See ya'll Nov. 6." And local media members actually saw him much sooner. In a Zoom call following his team's second fall practice Tuesday, Molden explained why he chose to remain on Montlake ."From the very beginning when it was declared that we weren't going to have a season, I think the name of the game was patience. And naturally, I'm not a very patient person," he said. "So that was something that was difficult for me. But right n ow I think it was a very valuable lesson, just because you don't know what the future's going to look like. I don't want to make an emotional decision, when I want to play football. "Everyone like Levi, Joe - everyone who has opted out - had their own pe rsonal reasons, and I've heard from those guys. They have very valid reasons for opting out. But for me, I think I just love the game so much that I wouldn't be able to sit out any longer knowing that I could have played. So that was my motivation for co ming back. Especially with a new (head) coach in Coach (Jimmy) Lake, I believe in him entirely and I feel like it's my last year at UW, but it's his first (as head coach). I wanted to start him off on a good note." - Seattle Times

The University of Washington is still trying to make its fall football game against Michigan happen. On Friday, Washington athletic director Jennifer Cohen told The Seattle Times that she's "working towards a plan" to still play the game, scheduled for S ept. 5 at Husky Stadium in Seattle, Wash. The game is the first of a two-game series agreed to in 2014, one that includes a 2021 matchup in Ann Arbor. In both cases, the traveling team stands to receive a $1 million guarantee. "I was actually just sendin g messages to Warde (Manuel), their athletic director, this morning," Cohen said in a story published on Monday. "They're of that same time frame and plan, too. So I think the question to me is as much, 'What will it look like in the venue?' as it is whe ther or not we're going to play it."Cohen's comments come as the college football world awaits plans from their respective universities this fall. The common belief is that football, and other fall sports, cannot happen without on-campus instructi on and other students present. While the University of Michigan has said it plans to have a on-site, "public health-informed" fall semester, Washington has not committed to such a plan yet. And according to Gov. Jay Inslee's plan to reopen the state, lar ge gatherings and sporting events may be limited until July. - Ann Arbor News

As far as football media days this summer go, the Pac-12 is falling in line with its FBS brethren. A league spokesman confirmed to The Salt Lake Tribune late Thursday evening that the Pac-12 will not hold its football media day as planned on July 29 at t he Hollywood & Highland Entertainment Center. Instead, the league will hold virtual media days. Of the 10 FBS conferences, seven have said they will go to a virtual format. Of those seven, the Pac-12 and Big 12 are the only Power Five conferences to anno unce their plans. The Big 12 said on Wednesday it will bail on in-person media days July 20-21 at AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys. The SEC (July 13-16, Atlanta), ACC (July 22-23, Charlotte) and Big Ten (July 22-23, Chicago) are the remaini ng FBS outliers. An exact format is still being worked out by the Pac-12, as is a date or dates for the event. On Thursday, the league announced a series of 30-minute, media-only webinars next week involving the league's 12 football coaches. Each day fro m Monday through Thursday, three coaches will participate with a different topic slated for each session. - Salt Lake Tribune

Following a meeting of its CEO Group, the Pac-12 announced Monday that organized team activities, with limited exceptions, are not allowed through May 31 due to the coronavirus pandemic. That puts an end to any possibility of spring football practice, wh ich Oregon State and Oregon had not officially cancelled. Through the end of May, Pac-12 teams are not allowed to have organized team practices, voluntary workouts, film study sessions, meetings or technique drills. Football teams are permitted two hours per week of virtual group activities, including film study. Other sports are allowed four hours. The Pac-12 says it is appealing to the NCAA to increase the two-hour time limit for football. Coaches are allowed to provide self-directed workout plans and demonstration videos, but they cannot watch or supervise. - The Oregonian
