Three more players from the Colorado football team, including two on scholarship, put their names in the NCAA transfer portal on Thursday. Starting safety Derrion Rakestraw and running back Jaren Mangham are intending to transfer, along with freshman wal k-on quarterback Michael Chandler II. Rakestraw was one of just five players remaining from CU's 2016 recruiting class. A three-star recruit from Sequoyah (Ga.) High School, he came to CU as a receiver, but shifted to cornerback in 2017. Among the Colorado safeties, Derrion Rakestraw is known as the "old man." Rakestraw has earned that badge not only because he's the lone senior among the group. He's also the guy that many of the others lean on. "He's the guy that gets them lined up, he' s the guy that communicates with them," CU defensive coordinator Tyson Summers said. "He's been an example to them and done a great job with his leadership. "He's one of my favorite guys, and obviously having been his position coach last year he's specia l to me. He's special to me for a lot of different reasons, but he's playing at a high level, communicating well and I'm really proud of everything he's done to this point in time."CU opens the season Nov. 7 against UCLA and Rakestraw is one of th e keys to their success because of his leadership in the back of the defense. Rakestraw has played in 36 games (11 starts) and is one of only eight seniors on the roster. He's one of only three remaining from the 2016 Pac-12 South championship team (alon g with linebacker Akil Jones and quarterback Sam Noyer). With all that experience, Rakestraw has a new level of confidence. "I'm pretty confident going into this season, just because the experience I got last year really helped me be able to play a lot f aster," he said. "Really with the whole defense we're trying to pick up where we left off last season, so I'm confident with the calls we got; I'm confident with our coaches and everybody out on the field with me." - Daily Camera

In a little more than two years, Rakestraw has evolved from a player adjusting to the second position change of his collegiate career to a steadying force at the back end of CU's defense. Recruited as a wide receiver and moved to cornerback after his red shirt season, Rakestraw eventually settled at safety, recording his first career interception in his first start at Arizona in 2018. He added three more last year while starting the season's final nine games. "I'm extremely comfortable back there now," R akestraw said. "I'm starving. I'm ready to get back on the field. This is my last go-around, so I'm ready to go out there and show people what I can do. Go out there as a team and just win some games. You saw what we were doing at the end of the season. I'm ready to just continue that trend into the next season." After juggling positions during the first half of his career, Rakestraw goes into his senior season as the only player on the spring two-deep roster with starting experience at either of the sa fety spots. - Daily Camera
