A decision to opt out and take a cash advance from his agent cost Nico Collins the opportunity to play at Michigan in 2020. The Wolverines' star receiver opted out of the abbreviated season last fall, after the Big Ten Conference announced plans to scrap fall sports amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Collins quickly made the decision, privately, to begin preparing for the NFL draft and signed with Rosenhaus Sports, led by high-profile agent Drew Rosenhaus. "Opting out, that gave me time to focus on the things I needed to improve my game," Collins told reporters on Wednesday, ahead of a scheduled pro-day event Friday in Ann Arbor. "I really self-evaluated my way of playing from last year. Just studying the things that I felt I needed to improve on. So, that's really what I worked on while opting out. That gave me a couple months to really focus on the things I really needed to improve on, and that's what I did." In an October interview with ESPN's Adam Schefter, Collins called the move to opt out of the abbre viated 2020 season a "business decision," citing "too many knowns" for his reason for hanging it up. - Ann Arbor News

Michigan's football team isn't ready to close the door on a potential return, but receiver Nico Collins won't be suiting up this week for the Wolverines. Nor, it appears, anytime soon. Head coach Jim Harbaugh told reporters on Monday that Collins, a two- time all-Big Ten honorable mention who was forecasted to be Michigan's top option in 2020, "is not participating in football right now." "And I don't have a crystal ball as to if his mind would change or not," Harbaugh said. "But I know he's not currentl y on the team." Michigan recently updated its roster to reflect changes, including Collins' decision not to play in 2020. Reports say the 6-foot-4, 222-pound wideout hired an agent and has started the process required to declare for the 2021 NFL Draft. - Ann Arbor News

Michigan's Nico Collins will no longer be wearing the jersey No. 4. The senior wide receiver posted on his Instagram story Monday that he is switching to No. 1. Some of the top receivers in Wolverines history have donned the No. 1, including Anthony Cart er, Greg McMurty, David Terrell and Braylon Edwards. All four rank among the top 11 in career receiving yards at Michigan. Collins is the first Michigan receiver to wear No. 1 since Kekoa Crawford, who transferred to California after the 2017 season. Mic higan senior cornerback Ambry Thomas also wears No. 1. The 6-foot-4 Collins has been one of the team's most consistent receivers over the past two seasons, catching 75 passes for 1,361 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns -- all team highs during that span. - Ann Arbor News

Josh Gattis has worked with some big-time receivers. At Penn State, he helped mold Chris Godwin into an NFL third-round pick. He coached Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs III, a pair of first-round picks, at Alabama. So when Michigan's offensive coordinator di shes out praise, it deserves some paying attention to. And that's exactly what Gattis did last week when the topic of Michigan receiver Nico Collins came up. "Nico Collins, I firmly believe, is one of the best receivers in all of college football," Gatti s, who is also Michigan's receivers coach, told reporters in a video conference call on Thursday. "And when you look at it statistically, his numbers match up there."It's hard to decipher what Gattis was referring to here - a follow-up question wa s never asked - as Collins failed to finish in the top 50 nationally in receiving yards, receptions or yards per game in 2019. Still, the 6-foot-4, 222-pound Collins put together respectable seasons in back-to-back years, earning honorable mention all-Bi g Ten honors the last two. This past fall, the Birmingham, Ala., native caught 37 passes for 729 yards and seven touchdowns, leaving a talented and busy Wolverines receiving group in receiving yards per catch (19.7) and per game (60.75). And he did it wh ile navigating injuries. "He was another guy that missed all the offseason last year," Gattis said. "So, when Nico started off the season, he had just gotten cleared two weeks before the season started. "He's a tough kid, because he played the previous y ear (2018) kind of beat up a little bit." - Ann Arbor News
