Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger has yet to say if he'll enter the NFL draft or return for the additional year that the NCAA has approved. The senior ranks second on most of UT's significant career passing records, but won't catch Colt McCoy's marks for pa ssing yards (he's 1,978 short) or touchdowns (he needs 20). And he's six touchdowns away from McCoy's total touchdowns record of 132. Ehlinger has accounted for six scores twice this season against Texas Tech and Oklahoma. - Austin American Statesman

With the NCAA granting an extra year of eligibility to all players this year, Texas senior quarterback Sam Ehlinger could return next season. Although not regarded as one of the top quarterback recruits in the 2021 NFL Draft, he is a pro prospect who is likely to get a good shot at the next level. This week, Ehlinger said, "I haven't come to a conclusion yet. I'm trying to enjoy these last few weeks, but I haven't closed one door on anything yet. No senior has really been in this position to where they' ve been granted an extra year of eligibility. Both options are incredible options." Ehlinger, who is 26-16 as a starter, is one of only two Power 5 quarterbacks in history to pass for over 11,000 yards in a career and add 1,500 rushing - joining former T exas star Colt McCoy. Ehlinger has thrown for 11,276 yards and 93touchdowns and added 1,912 yards and 33 touchdowns on the ground. - Daily Camera

Texas stopped West Virginia on fourth-down passes into the end zone twice in the fourth quarter, enabling the No. 22 Longhorns to escape with a 17-13 victory on Saturday. Texas (5-2, 4-2 Big 12) overcame an offense that produced nearly 100 yards and 27 p oints fewer than its average. Sam Ehlinger, typically the Longhorns' offensive star, completed just 15 of 31 passes for 184 yards, but he connected with Brennan Eagles for a 7-yard touchdown in the first quarter and with Jake Smith for a 33-yard TD in th e third. Freshman Bijan Robinson rushed for 113 yards on 12 carries for Texas. Jarret Doege completed 35 of 50 for 317 yards for West Virginia (4-3, 3-3) but failed to throw a touchdown. Texas had a sizeable edge in first-half yardage - 210-137 - but lef t the field with only a 10-7 lead. On one second-quarter possession, Ehlinger underthrew Eagles, who was open for a possible touchdown. Right before the end of the half, Cameron Dicker was wide left on a 48-yard field-goal attempt. Ehlinger was more accu rate when presented with an open receiver in the third quarter, connecting with Smith for the touchdown. - AP College Football

Sam Ehlinger threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Joshua Moore in overtime and Joseph Ossai sealed the victory by sacking Oklahoma State quarterback Spencer Sanders as Texas knocked off the previously unbeaten and sixth-ranked Cowboys 41-34 on Saturday. Okl ahoma State (4-1, 3-1 Big 12) outgained Texas 530 yards to 287, but the Cowboys turned the ball over four times and saw their hopes to reach the College Football Playoff take a major blow. Same goes for the entire Big 12. After Kansas State's loss to Wes t Virginia earlier in the day, Oklahoma State entered the game as the only remaining unbeaten team in Big 12 play. Now, the race is jumbled and Texas (4-2, 3-2) is back in the picture to possibly play in the championship game.Sanders passed for ca reer highs of 400 yards and four touchdowns, but he fumbled twice and threw an interception - turnovers that led to 13 Texas points. Tylan Wallace caught 11 passes for 187 yards and two touchdowns while Chuba Hubbard was held to 72 yards on 25 carries fo r the Cowboys. Oklahoma State drove into Texas territory late in the first half with a 24-17 lead, but Ossai stripped him and Texas defensive tackle Ta'Quon Graham recovered and returned the ball to the Oklahoma State 20. The Longhorns got just a field g oal out of it, and Oklahoma State took a 24-20 lead into the break. Sanders threw his fourth touchdown pass - a 9-yard toss to a well-covered Wallace - to give Oklahoma State a 31-20 lead. Texas' D'Shawn Jamison returned the kickoff 100 yards for a touch down. Texas missed the extra point, and Oklahoma State's lead was 31-26 midway through the third quarter. - AP College/Texas Football

Sam Ehlinger passed for an early touchdown, then ran for two more in the second half to lead Texas to a 27-16 win over Baylor on Saturday that snapped the Longhorns' two-game losing skid. Ehlinger set up Texas' first touchdown with a 42-yard completion o n a leaping catch by Joshua Moore. Those two connected again on a 3-yard scoring pass that put Texas ahead 13-3 at halftime. Texas (3-2, 2-2 Big 12) went ahead 20-3 with a punishing 80-yard drive to open the third quarter, mixing in runs with freshman Bi jan Robinson in his first career start, before a Baylor pass interference penalty set up Texas inside the Baylor 5. Ehlinger then powered in from 1-yard out. Ehlinger scored again in the third when he rolled to his right before taking off for the end zon e and splitting two defenders near the goal line. It was his seventh rushing touchdown on the season to go with 17 touchdown passes. Baylor (1-2, 1-2) hadn’t played since Oct. 3 and had to shut down its football program for 10 days because of a coronav irus outbreak on the roster. The Bears looked rusty on offense with struggles in pass protection and quarterback Charlie Brewer nearly throwing three first-half interceptions. Brewer finished with 256 yards and two late touchdown passes. - Texas/AP Colle ge Football

Saturday's matchup will be a showdown between two of the Big 12?s most experienced quarterbacks. Both four years into their respective programs, Ehlinger has started in nearly every game of his career while Charlie Brewer is a third-year starter. The two have endured frequent comparisons, and when stacking them up statistically, Ehlinger has been the more productive of the two. He's thrown for 10,081 yards and 84 touchdowns, while Brewer has amassed 8,113 passing yards and 55 touchdowns. Baylor head coa ch Dave Aranda pointed out the similarities between the two during his weekly media availability Monday. "When the game is close and the ball's in his hand, he's going to make a play and own it," he said of the Texas QB. "He's similar to [Brewer] in that respect. I know the offense runs through him. Their ability to have the run game, and there's tempo, there's RPOs, there's some shot plays, there's stacks that they motion to create and try to hide. "But then there's a bunch of key runs by a quarterback counter, quarterback power, by a quarterback zone read. I think when they get into certain parts of the game when they need a play, it goes to him. Our ability to play team defense versus that I think is key." - Dallas Morning News

The Longhorns bring their momentum home, where they are 14-5 under head coach Tom Herman. The Frogs will have to bring their A-game down to Austin to have a chance at beating the top-10 Longhorns. This senior quarterback is one of the nation's best under center. He has 11,149 yards of total offense (9,558 passing and 1,611 running) and 104 touchdowns throughout his career and is sure to be a candidate for the Heisman Trophy this season. So far in his 2020 campaign, Ehlinger has a 71.2% completion rate, completing 52 of 73 passes for 688 yards and scoring 10 touchdowns. He also has recorded 81 rushing yards as well as one rushing touchdown this season. Like TCU quarterback Max Duggan, Ehlinger has dangerous legs. He has scored 26 rushing touchdowns in h is career at Texas. Just like he did last week, Ehlinger seems to step up in the biggest moments for the Longhorns. He has totaled six game-winning drives, so Frog fans should not get comfortable if their team is ahead because Ehlinger won't go down with out a fight. - Dallas Morning News

Texas was trailing Texas Tech by 15 points with just more than 3 minutes to play when Sam Ehlinger walked over to his coach and delivered a message. The No. 8 Longhorns weren't out of it, the senior quarterback said. Far from it. Texas would leave the fi eld a winner. Ehrlinger even predicted it. Ehlinger delivered on his promise, rallying Texas from a 56-41 deficit in the final 3:13 with touchdown passes to Brennan Eagles and Joshua Moore to force overtime, then finding Moore for another touchdown in a wild 63-56 victory.Texas Tech thought it had the game put away late behind a diving touchdown catch by T.J. Vasher and a 75-yard touchdown run by SaRodorick Thompson Jr. Ehlinger just looked at the clock and did his thing with a brilliant finish. Ehlinger first connected with Eagles for a touchdown and the Longhorns snagged the onside kick when the ball bounced high and slipped through the hands of a Red Raiders player. After finding Moore for another score to get within 56-54, Ehlinger passed to Eagles again for the 2-point conversion. - AP College Football

In a 59-3 beating of over UTEP on Saturday night, Ehlinger threw for 426 yards and five touchdowns. Ehlinger completed 25 of his 33 attempts. He played only one series in the second half. Ehlinger's 426 passing yards are the third-most in UT's history. E hlinger and Texas Tech's Alan Bowman, who had 430 yards and two touchdowns in a 35-33 win over Houston Baptist, were the only Big 12 quarterbacks who topped 300 passing yards in their first games. In his postgame press conference, Ehlinger said he was ac tually "disappointed" with how he played against the Miners. Ehlinger noted that he missed on a couple of opportunities to put more points on the scoreboard. On the two first-half drives that Texas attempted field goals on, Ehlinger was unable to connect with receivers Tarik Black and Brennan Eagles on passes into the end zone.During his weekly media availability on Monday, Texas coach Tom Herman was asked about Ehlinger's self-evaluation. Herman was pleased with Ehlinger's performance, but under stood those comments. "Anytime you throw for 424 yards in a half and five touchdowns, that's a pretty good day at the office," Herman said. "There was a few (throws), I could see why he said what he said...Those were only a couple compared to the numerou s really good reads and great throws that he made." - Austin American Statesman

A publishing platform that specializes in helping athletes build their brands believes that Texas Longhorns senior quarterback Sam Ehlinger would benefit tremendously from the financial opportunities provided by the ability to monetize his name, image, a nd likeness, especially on social media. Opendorse provided data to Axios that shows potential earning based on data gained over a decade of working with professional athletes and Ehlinger tops the list at $962k based on factors like school, social prese nce, and success/name recognition. The data illustrates the extent to which having access to a large social media audience could increasingly force college athletes to place a significant priority on building their online followings as the NCAA mov es to lift restrictions. Opendorse's CEO cautioned about the coming shift from "assumptions to reality," but the company's data is already drawing attention on social media, with Texas Director of Recruiting Bryan Carrington using it as a recruiting tool . Expect that to become increasingly common - Forbes expects colleges to hire "brand coaches" to help athletes market themselves. Meanwhile, support personnel and assistant coaches will tout the ability to monetize a prospect's NIL on the recruiting trai l in order to land the top players. - Burnt Orange Nation

Ehlinger's GoFundMe fundraiser has crossed $100,000, thanks to a donation from Nick Foles' foundation. "It's been an awesome effort, and I'm very appreciative of everyone that's helped out." Health wise, Ehlinger said he's moved past a stubborn rib inj ury that cropped up again in February. Quarantine life for Heisman Trophy candidates is just as miserable as it is for us mere mortals. At least Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger is stuck at home with another Longhorn, his younger brother Jake, a linebacke r. "Obviously I have a workout partner," Ehlinger said Thursday, "and he's probably gotten sick of being in quarantine with me because I'll take him in the backyard and I'll pelt footballs at him when I want to throw." Targeting a return to Royal-Memoria l Stadium is far more tricky.Ehlinger spends his days working out in a makeshift weight room in his mom's garage, taking online classes and trying to connect with teammates tossed far and wide. Like everybody else, the senior hopes for the best. " I'm going to approach this as the season is going to start on time," Ehlinger said on a conference call with reporters. "I'm going to take every day as if it's another day when I'm at the facility." Ehlinger has long known his power extends far beyond th e football field. On March 25, the Westlake product started a COVID-19 fundraiser on the GoFundMe website with the goal of raising $1 million. On Wednesday, it crossed $100,000. - Austin American Statesman

After leading Texas to 19 wins over the past three seasons, Sam Ehlinger is doing his part to beat an even bigger opponent. Ehlinger took to social media on Friday to announce a fundraiser for COVID-19 relief. Through a GoFundMe page, the Longhorn quarte rback said he wants to raise $1 million. The donations will be distributed to both national and local organizations like the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and the Central Texas Food Bank. Within the first hour of Ehlinger's fundraiser, he had raised arou nd $5,000. That number had tripled as of Friday afternoon. Names on the list of donors included Mike Yurcich and Tim Beck.On Friday, Texas coach Tom Herman told that American-Statesman that "I'm just so proud. Ever since I've known him, he has use d his celebrity to help other people, more than anybody I've ever seen. And it's real. It is not a show. It's important to him. … Such a great representation not just for Texas football, not just for the University of Texas, not just for Austin, not ju st for the state of Texas but for the entire country. Sam Ehlinger passed for three touchdowns and ran for another, and Texas excised the frustrations of a disappointing regular season with a dominant 38-10 win over No. 12 Utah in the Alamo Bowl on Tuesday night. After a 10-win season in 2018 set up a Top 1 0 ranking to start 2019, Texas underwhelmed in a season the Longhorns expected to contend for the Big 12 title. Instead, they ended the year with both the offensive and defensive coordinators getting replaced. For one game at least, Texas (8-5) wiped all that away with a bruising and convincing win over a Utah team that only a month ago was on the verge of making the College Football Playoff. The Utes (11-3) didn't get there after they were swamped in the Pac-12 title game by Oregon and perhaps struggle d to shake off the heartbreak of what could have been. - AP College Football

Sam Ehlinger passed for two touchdowns and ran for another to lead Texas to a 49-24 win over Texas Tech on Friday, guaranteeing the Longhorns will at least finish a disappointing season with a winning record. Texas fell behind 14-0 in the first quarter b efore Ehlinger and the Longhorns came roaring back. Ehlinger scored his first rushing touchdown in five games, and later connected on scoring strikes of 75 yards to Devin Duvernay and 26 yards to Jake Smith. Ehlinger finished with 348 yards passing and r an for 83 yards on 10 carries. Roschon Johnson added 105 yards rushing and three touchdowns.Texas (7-5, 5-4 Big 12) started the season ranked in the Top 10 after last season’s Sugar Bowl victory, but stumbled badly over the second half of coach Tom Herman’s third season. A loss Friday would have meant Texas had to win its bowl game to have a winning season. Texas avoided that kind of pressure thanks to Ehlinger and the Longhorns offense playing their best football since early October. Texas T ech (4-8, 2-7) jumped out early with two quick touchdown drives as quarterback Jett Duffey was carving up the Longhorns defense. But the Red Raiders also had three drives end on downs deep in Texas territory as Texas Tech’s first-year coach Matt Wells chased an upset win to end the season. Duffey passed for 398 yards. - AP College Football

Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger is still on a tear through the school's single-season passing records, but his last few games have been kind of rough. He's completing less than 60% of his passes the last four games and has six interceptions to eight touch downs. Herman, however, says he has "no issues" about Ehlinger's play and that only one of the turnovers against TCU was his fault. "Everybody wants to look at sacks and say the O-line stinks," Herman said. "Everybody wants to look at interceptions and s ay the quarterback stinks or had a bad game. He made one bad decision." - AP College Football

Sam Ehlinger threw two touchdown passes and ran for two more scores while No. 11 Texas converted three turnovers into TDs in a 42-31 victory over West Virginia on Saturday. Ehlinger and Texas (4-1, 2-0 Big 12) beat the Mountaineers (3-2, 1-1) on the road for the second straight time. The Longhorns had plenty of motivation for this one. Ehlinger and several Texas players were upset last year after several Mountaineers flashed "horns down" signs during West Virginia's 42-41 win in Austin, Texas. Ehlinger noted in a tweet that was later deleted: "Do not think it will be forgotten."Ehlinger finished 18 of 33 for 211 yards. He threw just his second interception of the season that West Virginia turned into a third-quarter field goal. The Texas defense showed no signs of slowing down despite injuries that have decimated the secondary. The Longhorns intercepted Austin Kendall four times, twice by cornerback D'Shawn Jamison. Texas needed those turnovers to break open a close game, too. B.J. Foster's pic k early in the fourth quarter led to Devin Duvernay's 13-yard scoring run. Kendall was intercepted on the next drive by Jamison at the West Virginia 18, and Ehlinger threw a lateral to offensive lineman Samuel Cosmi, who rumbled 12 yards into the end zon e for a 35-17 lead. Kendall threw three TD passes, including pair of fourth-quarter scores, and had a 1-yard scoring run. He finished 31 of 46 for a career-high 367 yards. - Texas/AP College Football

Sam Ehlinger did what he usually does: throw for a bunch of touchdowns and deliver big runs. Put him together with more games like this from the Texas defense, and the Longhorns will go far in the Big 12 this season. Ehlinger passed for four touchdowns f or the third time this season, and the No. 12 Longhorns' defense held Oklahoma State's big playmakers in check for most of the game to slug out a tough 36-30 victory Saturday night to open the Big 12 schedule. Texas (3-1, 1-0) ended a four-game losing st reak to the Cowboys (3-1, 0-1) and ended a five-game skid in the series in games played in Austin dating to 2010.To do it, the Longhorns had to overcome three turnovers, including Ehlinger's first interception of the season, and needed his clock-k illing 29-yard run in the final minute to put the game away. "Once I knew I had the first down and the game was over, it was an incredible feeling," Ehlinger said. "You say you want to win at home." But it was the Texas defense that coach Tom Herman prai sed. The Longhorns held Chuba Hubbard, the nation's leading rusher coming into the night, to 121 yards on 37 carries and a long run of 13 yards. He scored twice but was also stuffed near the goal on key drives early and late. Tylan Wallace, who came in t ied for the national lead with six touchdown receptions, didn't find the end zone against the Longhorns and had just two catches in the second half. - Texas/AP College Football

Texas keeps adding to the offensive firepower around quarterback Sam Ehlinger with some big early results. The No. 12 Longhorns (2-1) will need everyone to chip in if they plan to keep up with Oklahoma State (3-0) on Saturday in the opening week of the B ig 12. Ehlinger is off to one of the best start in school history with 11 touchdowns and 956 yards passing through three games. He is also one of only three major college quarterbacks with no interceptions in at least 100 pass attempts. The way the Longh orns keep giving him more targets for potential touchdowns has certainly grabbed Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy's attention."The quarterback is considerably better than he has been, in my opinion," Gundy said "They've got big and tall receivers a nd they want to throw the ball down the field...They are throwing the ball more than they've ever been." Wide receiver is Texas' deepest position. After losing last season's standout playmaker, Lil'Jordan Humphrey, to the NFL draft, Brennan Eagles and Ma lcolm Epps stepped into the role of big-body receivers who can physically dominate smaller defensive backs. Eagles, who is 6-foot-4 and 225 pounds, has three touchdowns on nine catches with a whopping 22.6-yard average per reception. Epps is even bigger at 6-foot-6 and 245 pounds, and made his first career start last week against Rice with four catches for 53 yards. Texas also has 6-5 senior Collin Johnson, who is expected to return after sitting out last week against Rice with a sore hamstring. The big ger impact is coming underneath with smaller, faster slot receivers Devin Duvernay and Jake Smith, who have combined for six touchdowns. - AP College Football

Texas coach Tom Herman wanted to see his team put last week's loss behind them and start fast Saturday night. The Longhorns did just that. Sam Ehlinger threw for 279 yards and three touchdowns, Jake Smith caught six passes for 75 yards and two touchdowns and No. 12 Texas rebounded from its first loss of the season with a 48-13 rout of Rice. "We said all week elite teams, you don't prove to yourself you're an elite team by winning every top 10 matchup that you face," Herman said. "Obviously, we wish we w ould have played better last week, but this week was going to be the big test to prove to ourselves that we could prepare, train, take care of our bodies at an elite level. And then, obviously, we had to go out there and play and start fast, and I though t both sides of the ball really, really showed they believed in that."Ehlinger threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Roschon Johnson to cap the opening drive before throwing touchdown passes of 53 yards and 12 yards to Smith in the first half. Ehlinge r finished 23 of 27 passing in less than three quarters. "Any type of game where you win after a loss is huge," Ehlinger said. "For us to come out and play to our standard, continue to prove to ourselves that when we work really hard and play to our stan dard, it is hard for people to beat us is great." Keaontay Ingraham rushed for 74 yards and had touchdown runs of 26 yards and 14 yards after rushing for 29 yards on 10 carries last week. - Texas/AP College Football

It took three years to get there, but Texas is finally 1-0 under coach Tom Herman. Sam Ehlinger threw four touchdown passes and the 10th-ranked Longhorns rolled past Louisiana Tech 45-14 on Saturday night, giving Herman his first season-opening victory w ith the program. Texas had started each of the past two seasons with losses to Maryland, but had no trouble overwhelming the Bulldogs from Conference-USA in this one. Ehlinger was coolly efficient from the start with scoring passes on three of Texas' fir st four possessions.Herman dismissed the previous bad starts as "irrelevant," but those losses had hung over his first two seasons, even when Texas finished 2018 with a Sugar Bowl win over Georgia. His players were more willing to acknowledge just how significant getting to 1-0 meant. "It's a testament to the maturity or our team," Ehlinger said. "The confidence we have to just let loose in the opener after the last two years." Offensive lineman Sam Cosmi called the win good for the soul. "Gettin g a win is really good for our heads, our morale and confidence," Cosmi said. Texas is one of the favorites to challenge Oklahoma for the Big 12 title as long as Ehlinger can keep delivering touchdowns like he did last season and Saturday night. The juni or passed for 25 TDs and ran for 16 more last season, and his four scoring thrown against the Bulldogs tied his career high. Ehlinger left the game at 38-0 and did not play in the fourth quarter. - AP College Football

The hits came at Sam Ehlinger from just about every angle this summer. Baker Mayfield jabbed him first. Then Terry Bradshaw landed one. The junior quarterback for Texas didn't seem to mind, and will likely care even less every time he gets to flash a "Ho ok'em horns" hand sign after scoring a touchdown. Which he does a lot. "It's completely irrelevant in my mind," Ehlinger said as he leads No. 10 Texas into a 2019 season when the Longhorns will be expected to again challenge for the Big 12 title. "All th at's outside noise."The noisy Summer of (Bashing) Sam erupted in June when Mayfield, the former Heisman Trophy-winning Oklahoma quarterback now with the Cleveland Browns, used a radio interview to dig deep into a pool of rivalry resentment. He and Ehlinger played for rival powerhouse high school programs in the Austin area. Mayfield said Ehlinger wasn't as good as Drew Brees or Nick Foles, two pro quarterbacks who also came from Ehlinger's Westlake High School (and some pretty good company to be mentioned with). "Sam can stay down there in Texas," Mayfield said. "That'll stir the pot. He doesn't like me, and I hope he knows I don't like him either." Then came Bradshaw, the retired NFL great who said Ehlinger "ain't that good" when speaking to a Louisiana Tech fan group. - AP College Football
