Georgia is hopeful that star safety Richard LeCounte will be able to play Saturday in a make-up game against Missouri, six weeks after he was injured in a motorcycle accident. Coach Kirby Smart said LeCounte was progressing well though he was expected to be held out of contact drills in Monday's practice. LeCounte sustained a shoulder injury, bruised ribs and several cuts and scrapes in the Oct. 31 accident, which occurred just hours after the No. 12 Bulldogs (6-2) returned to Athens from a 14-3 victory at Kentucky. Smart also expressed optimism that defensive lineman Jordan Davis and running back Kendall Milton would be able to play against the Tigers (5-3), who have a three-game winning streak. - AP College Football

LeCounte, the preseason All-American, could be back for a game in mid-December after he sustained bruised ribs and a concussion in dirt bike accident after returning from the Kentucky game. "Whether or not he makes it back or not will depend on how long the season goes," Smart said. Smart said on his radio show Thursday night that LeCounte was able to get into a pool for rehab work on Wednesday. He had already been on an excercise bike. Director of sports medicine Ron Courson, "wouldn't put a timetable on it of four to six weeks. It's more when he heals." LeCounte has been out on the practice field as a nonparticipant with his teammates. "He enjoys being around the meetings," Smart said. "He's making his way back to more normalcy." - Athens Daily Banner

Three days after he was taken to Athens Regional Hospital after a dirt bike wreck Saturday evening, Georgia safety Richard LeCounte returned to the team facilities at the Butts-Mehre building to be attended to at the team's training room. Coach Kirby Smart confirmed Wednesday the senior was released from the hospital. He had been in the intensive care unit after the multiple vehicle incident on Macon Highway. "He was able to get some different treatment and some rehab," Smart said. LeCounte won't play in Saturday's game against Florida in Jacksonville. It's uncertain when he can return to a football field. The preseason All-American sustained a concussion after his motorcycle collided with an automobile making a left turn and then struck another automobile in an oncoming lane. Florida defensive coordinator Todd Grantham offered, "thoughts and prayers," to LeCounte during his session with reporters Tueday night. - Athens Daily Banner

Georgia star safety Richard LeCounte was injured in a motorcycle accident shortly after the Bulldogs returned to Athens from their victory at Kentucky. LeCounte, one of the team's top defensive players, was taken to the trauma center at Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center. He was still being treated Sunday, according to Ron Courson, the school's director of sports medicine. "His injuries are not life-threatening and a full recovery is expected," Courson said in a statement. Courson did not say how long LeCounte might be out of action for No. 5 Georgia (4-1).

The Bulldogs have a huge game next weekend, facing No. 8 Florida (3-1) in the annual "Cocktail Party" clash in Jacksonville. LeCounte's mother, Erika Blocker-LeCounte, said her son was struck by two cars while driving his motorcycle Saturday night, just hours after the Bulldogs had flown home from their 14-3 victory over Kentucky. LeCounte had a career-high 13 tackles and a fumble recovery in the game. For the season, he leads the team with three interceptions. "He's lucky to be alive," Blocker-LeCounte told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "He was wearing his helmet and (that) saved his life." The Journal-Constitution said LeCounte sustained a shoulder injury, bruised ribs and several cuts and scrapes. He did not have any broken bones and no surgery will be required. "God spared him his life, we can't ask for more," his mother said. "Glory to God." - AP College Football

Before they packed up and headed home on a flight to Athens that arrived early Sunday morning, the players on the Georgia football team could lean on recent history to know that all was not lost in the disappointment of Saturday night's 41-24 takedown by No. 2 Alabama. They took some solace in knowing they could see the Crimson Tide again in the SEC championship game in December. "That's what everybody was saying in the locker room," quarterback Stetson Bennett said. "Our destiny is still controlled by us, which is how you want it. If we win out, we'll probably see those guys or somebody else. We'll be in the SEC championship if we win out. Everything we want is still ahead of us."

The Bulldogs (3-1) remain one game ahead of Florida (2-1) in the SEC East in the win column but merely getting to Atlanta isn't the end all and be all for Georgia. Not in Kirby Smart's fifth season. Georgia was throttled by eventual national champion LSU last year 37-10 in the SEC championship and while the Bulldogs looked every bit worthy of the No. 3 ranking Saturday when it led the Crimson Tide 24-20 at the half, the offense was shutout in the second half and the Crimson Tide kept piling on points and yards in Bryant-Denny Stadium. "We're going to be better next time, we're going to be better next game," safety Richard LeCounte said. "They got us this first time." - Athens Daily Banner

Georgia lost preseason All-American safety Richard LeCounte with 3:49 left in the first half Saturday night against Auburn for a targeting call. LeCounte was ejected from the game, but won't have to miss next week's game against Tennessee. On a third-and-3 at the Georgia 15, LeCounte hit wide receiver Shedrick Johnson when he tried to catch a pass from Bo Nix while falling down. LeCounte appeared to hit Johnson with his shoulder but it struck the wideout in the head and the targeting call stood. Following Georgia's 27-6 win, Linebacker Monty Rice disagreed with the referees' assessment of the play. "Y'all saw it, we all saw it, I think it was the best way that he could have tackled him without targeting," Rice said. "Obviously they called it, but that was textbook the way he played it, in my opinion." Auburn defensive back Smoke Monday was also ejected in the first quarter for a targeting call. Georgia held Auburn on a 20-yard field goal for its first points to cut the Georgia lead to 24-20. LeCounte, a senior, had two interceptions last week against Arkansas. - Athens Daily Banner

280 total yards and 10 points given up against an Arkansas team that lost its 20th straight SEC game, It didn't start that way on what is viewed as one of the nation's best defenses. Razorbacks wideout Treylon Burks slid by All-American caliber safety Richard LeCounte on a 49-yard touchdown pass from Feleipe Franks. "We just had a little mix up on the communication,"LeCounte said. Later in the half, Franks was out of the pocket and all the time in the world. He signaled for his receiver to come back and then he threw a dart to Burks for a 20-yard completion in front of LeCounte. On a third-and-4 in the third quarter, he found receiver Mike Woods in the middle of the field to move the chains on a drive that ended with a field goal. Now for the good stuff. LeCounte had a pair of interceptions and cornerback Eric Stokes had his first that he returned 30 yards for a touchdown. Georgia's first points came on a safety when Mark Webb and Azeez Ojulari were in the backfield on a double reverse and the ball trickled out of end zone for with 14:30 left in first half to put Georgia on the scoreboard 7-2. "We came in during halftime," LeCounte said. "Everyone was still positive that we were going to win this football game. We came out I nthe second half and played the game like we know how to play. There was a lot of things we had to fix and we fixed it." - Athens Daily Banner

LeCounte might be the most vital to the defense. He's watched for three years as Reed has acted as one of the quarterbacks on the defensive side. Now, it's his turn. LeCounte has a knack for making big hits and causing turnovers, but he also has lacked discipline in the past. Head coach Kirby Smart has said that his safety sometimes goes off script while patrolling the secondary. As one of the senior leaders of the defense, LeCounte will now be looked at to provide stability, communication and discipline to the Bulldog defenders. After being under Reed's wing, the defense is now his to command. - Macon Telegraph

Georgia football players left for spring break March 6 and haven't worked out on campus since due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. That could change in June with players returning to the school's weight room and practice fields for voluntary workouts. Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity said SEC presidents and chancellors are expected to discuss the issue on May 22. "The first task is determining when voluntary workouts could resume on campus," McGarity said.

The SEC's ban on athletic activity now runs through May 31, but the presidents could choose not to extend that. If the league allows athletes to return as soon as June 1, LSU athletic director Scott Woodward told The Advocate they will be back on campus in Baton Rouge then. Georgia seems unlikely to return that early. UGA president Jere Morehead touched on the issue when the campus might reopen and what safety measures would be in place then in a public letter to faculty members Thursday. "As we move forward, we will continue to prioritize the safety of our faculty, staff, and students and to ensure timely and transparent communications as new information becomes available," he said. - Athens Daily Banner
