Former Michigan cornerback Ambry Thomas opted out before last season, but despite the time away from the game, he is certain he is among the best at his position. Thomas and 10 of his teammates will participate in Michigan's Pro Day on Friday as they continue preparing for the NFL Draft April 29-May 1. The NFL canceled the combine, so this will give scouts a chance to see how the players test and perform in individual drills. "I was the No. 1 cornerback in the Big Ten before I decided to opt out, and I still am. I truly believe that I'm a top-five cornerback, without a doubt," Thomas told reporters on Wednesday. Before the 2019 season, Thomas, a Detroit-native who played at King, spent a month in the hospital with colitis and lost more than 30 pounds. He returned to start every game and had three interceptions, seven pass breakups, two fumble recoveries and 38 tackles. - Detroit News

Michigan will be without a returning starter on defense if it returns to play early in 2021. Senior cornerback Ambry Thomas announced Thursday plans to forego his remaining collegiate eligibility and enter the 2021 NFL Draft. Thomas, a Detroit native, said he came to the decision after "long thought and numerous discussions with may parents," he wrote in a letter on social media. "This is a very difficult decision, as there is nothing I wanted to do more than to suit up in the maize and blue this fall," Thomas continued. "However, in light of the (Big Ten) season being postponed, my family and I decided that beginning to prepare for the draft is the right step to take."

The 6-foot, 183-pound Thomas flirted with the NFL last year, leaving the door open to declaring early in during the lead up to Michigan's Citrus Bowl game against Alabama. As a 13-game starter at cornerback, Thomas amassed 38 tackles (three for a loss), three interceptions, seven pass deflections and two fumble recoveries while garnering third-team all-Big Ten honors by the coaches. But he ultimately decided to return, hoping to use the 2020 season to boost his stock as part of the Wolverines' experienced defense. - Ann Arbor News

Another Michigan football player is out the door. Cornerback Ambry Thomas announced Thursday night he will forego his remaining eligibility and declare for the 2021 NFL draft, just over a week after the Big Ten postponed all fall sports. "This was a very difficult decision as there is nothing I wanted to do more than to suit up in the maize and blue this fall," Thomas wrote in a statement posted on Twitter. "However, in light of the season being postponed, my family and I have decided that beginning to prepare for the draft is the right step to take." - The Detroit News
