Miami's top pass rusher, Jaelen Phillips, recently announced he was opting out of the bowl game to focus on preparing for the NFL Draft. The 6-foot-5, 266-pound defensive end has been one of Miami's top defensive playmakers all season. In addition to bei ng fourth on the team with 45 tackles, he led the Hurricanes with 8.0 sacks and 15.5 tackles for loss. He also had five quarterback hurries, three pass breakups and an interception. "Obviously, a guy like Jaelen is not going to be easy to replace," Miami coach Manny Diaz said. "There are players that have the ability to step in and make some things happen, whether that's a Jahfari Harvey or a Cam Williams. That's part of what bowl games are right now. It gives you the opportunity for the next-man-up sit uation and I think those guys will be excited for the challenge." - Daily Oklahoman

PLAYERS TO WATCH: Despite the decision of Gregory Rousseau to opt out of 2020, Miami has a pair of talented book ends on the defensive line in redshirt junior Jaelan Phillips and redshirt senior Quincy Roche. Though both have never suited up for the Hurr icanes, Phillips was previously ranked the No. 1 recruit in the country out of high school and spent the first two years of his career at UCLA. He redshirted 2019. - Miami Football

Zach McCloud's thoughts on the impressiveness of 6-5, 270-pound defensive end Jaelen Phillips, who previously played for UCLA and was the No. 1 overall recruit coming out of high school in 2017: "One of the most impressive things about him is his just cr azy relentless pursuit to the ball. [On] every play, every scrimmage after the whistle blows, he's still sprinting, getting the last little burst in. It's crazy to see somebody that big just be able to be that consistent all throughout practice, all thro ughout the game. His effort is something else." - Miami Herald

One of the most-ballyhooed transfers in recent UM history apparently is displaying what made him a five-star recruit out of high school. Defensive end Jaelan Phillips, who signed with UCLA and transferred to Miami in 2019 and then sat out last season und er NCAA transfer rules, "has had a phenomenal camp, one of the best camps of anyone on the defensive side of the ball," defensive coordinator Blake Baker told WQAM's Joe Rose Show on Monday. And that's critical, because Phillips is expected to replace NF L-bound Greg Rousseau (who opted out of playing this season) as a starter opposite Quincy Roche. "Phillips will surprise a lot of people," Baker said. "I think he'll kind of shock the world." - Miami Herald

"A special dude," is how UM defensive coordinator Blake Baker described Phillips. "It's like creating a player on NCAA Football, when they used to have that video game. He has very low body fat percentage [and is] flexible. Very, very smart young man, so he's got all the tangibles and intangibles." Defensive line coach Todd Stroud, who has been coaching college football since 1986, said for a 270-pounder, Phillips "runs like a safety." "His ability to run and jump and twitch...I would put Jaelan Phillip s in the 99th percentile of any player I've ever coached in terms of physical attributes. "The athlete meets the hype as far as him being a five-star guy." Phillips had 21 tackles, seven tackles for loss, 3 1/2 sacks (second on team) and two pass breakup s as a UCLA true freshman in 2017. In four games as a sophomore in 2018, he had 20 tackles, a tackle for loss, a sack and quarterback hurry, but he was plagued with injuries, including concussions and a severe wrist injury after the car accident. - Miami Herald

With Rousseau opting out, Jaelan Phillips and Jahfari Harvey will get more snaps as UM's second and third defensive ends (behind Quincy Roche), and several players (Jason Blissett, Chantz Williams, Cameron Williams, Jared Harrison-Hunte) will get a chanc e to compete for the No. 4 job. Here's what defensive line coach Todd Stroud told me this summer about Phillips and Harvey: "Jaelan is an elite pass rusher. The system they played at UCLA is totally different than ours, but he adapts very well and likes our system. He can be a devastating [force]. He runs very well for a big guy. It's a shame we got only four practices in, but he got his feet wet. He had to knock off the rust. He's got a very good skill set. He's eager to learn..."Jahfari is not as vert ical as those other [edge] guys," Stroud said. "He's 6-3 and he's extremely powerful. He was 218 when he got here, and he's over 240 right now. "As far as flat-out speed and ability to run, he's our most elite defensive end in terms of how he runs. He's very twitchy, and his short-area speed is unbelievable. He seems to be getting a better grip on our defense, which allows him to play full speed more. He's responded to the pressure of having to learn this defense very well." - Miami Herald

We have heard plenty lately from the University of Miami's new, intriguing offensive side of the ball, thanks to new coordinator Rhett Lashlee. Monday, the defensive side got its shot. Hurricanes defensive coordinator Blake Baker went on 560 WQAM radio t o talk about all things defense for Miami, which seemed like a good break for the coach, who is working from home as his wife Roslyn navigates most of the family care for children ages 5, 2 and 8 months. Host Joe Rose asked "how good, potentially," are T emple graduate transfer defensive end Quincy Roche, redshirt sophomore defensive end Greg Rousseau and former UCLA defensive end Jaelan Phillips - the latter rated by 247Sports as the No. 1 player in the recruiting class of 2017.Phillips, in only 10 career games at UCLA, had 41 tackles, including eight for losses and 4 1/2 sacks. Various significant injuries limited him to four games in 2018. He sat out last year after transferring to UM and will be a redshirt junior when UM's next season begins. "Getting Jaelan Phillips in there...We got four [spring] practices in and he hadn't played football for coming on nearly two years. But man, he's just a natural. You know how you create a player on your video game? That's how you create a defensive end from a physical standpoint. He still has a long way to go just not playing the game for a couple years. He's still knocking some of the rust off." - Miami Herald

Not only do the Hurricanes have two defensive ends who combined for 28.5 sacks last season in Greg Rousseau and Quincy Roche, but the staff is also very encouraged by what they have seen from former five-star recruit Jaelan Phillips and redshirt freshman Jahfari Harvey. Phillips, who transferred from UCLA after the 2018 season and sat out last season while enrolled at Miami, looked good in UM's first four practices after transforming his body from 220 to 262 pounds since arriving on campus last year. "H e flashes and shows a lot of promise," defensive line coach Todd Stroud said in a phone conversation Thursday. "He runs very well for a big guy. It's a shame we got only four practices in, but he got his feet wet. He had to knock off the rust. He's got a very good skill set. He's eager to learn."Jaelan is an elite pass rusher. The system they played at UCLA is totally different than ours, but he adapts very well and likes our system. He can be a devastating" presence off the edge. In just 10 care er games at UCLA, he had 41 tackles, including eight for loss and 4.5 sacks. He was limited to four games in 2018, his final season at UCLA, because of a concussion and other injuries. He's now fully recovered from a wrist injury that affected him last y ear while he sat out. - Miami Herald

The Miami Hurricanes' defensive end combination of Greg Rousseau and Quincy Roche - two of college football's top 10 sack leaders from last season - could already be one of the nation's fiercest tandems. That doesn't even account for what redshirt junior Jaelan Phillips could provide the UM pass rush this fall. The former five-star recruit has finally practiced with the team during the start of spring drills after sitting out all of 2019, following his transfer from UCLA. It's evident Phillips is motiva ted to contribute as Miami's next pass-rushing specialist. Rousseau and Roche, a grad transfer from Temple, had a combined 28 1/2 sacks last season. "He's a special dude," defensive coordinator Blake Baker said of Phillips. "The thing that's very impress ive about him is how well he hits. He understands leverage. He does a great job getting into the offensive tackle's pads."That's especially encouraging considering Phillips hasn't played in almost two years. Before sitting out in 2019, he missed m ost of 2018 at UCLA with a concussion and various other injuries. "He's a freak of nature. He's huge. He's fast," Rousseau said. "I'm just happy for him because I know what it's like to come back from an injury. It's tough, and he's worked so hard for th ese moments and he's really going to take advantage of them. I believe in him 100 percent. We all do." Coach Manny Diaz said that Phillips' presence could push Rousseau and Roche. - Sun Sentinel

Jaelan Phillips, the nation's No. 1 overall prospect in the Class of 2017 and a former UCLA Bruins defensive end, was officially added to the University of Miami football roster on Thursday. Also added to the roster on Thursday: former Southern Cal safet y Bubba Bolden, who watched practice in street clothes on Wednesday but had not been formally added to the roster. He was seen standing on the sidelines in workout clothes during practice Thursday.
