Kene Nwangwu, Iowa State, Player News

  05/04/21 - RB Kene NwangwurSr/2021, Iowa State, 6-0, 210 (DS#30 RB) + More +

One of the most unselfish football players during Iowa State's rise toward school history last season is headed to the NFL. Kene Nwangwu, the Cyclones' ultra-valuable skill-position backup and premier kickoff returner, was selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the fourth round of the draft Saturday. He projects as a special teams player, primarily a kickoff returner, where he was 11th nationally last season with an average of 28.9 yards per return. "Kene was among a unique group of seniors who were really special," Iowa State coach Matt Campbell said in a statement Saturday. "Kene has been through so much here at Iowa State. He had a great start to his career, and then he tears his Achilles. It was a long tough road back for him, and it wasn't easy. "To watch his leadership grow, see what he has done for our football program, and (Saturday), to see him get drafted, I am so thrilled for him." He's not the only Cyclones representation in NFL camps - tight end Dylan Soehner as a New Orleans free agent, receiver Landen Akers as a Rams free agent, record-setting defensive end JaQuan Bailey likewise with Philadelphia, and defensive back Lawrence White in Tampa's camp. - Ames Tribune

  08/30/20 - RB Kene NwangwurSr/2021, Iowa State, 6-0, 210 (DS#30 RB) + More +

Nwangwu is in the best football shape of his life. Let me repeat: Kene Nwangwu is as healthy as he's been since joining Iowa State's football program as a fleet-footed freshman way back in 2017. The torn Achilles and subsequent surgery he had in February 2017 isn't a factor. The nagging bumps and bruises aren't problematic, either. And yes, insiders say he's still the fastest player on Campbell's team. That should make every Iowa State fan perk up, because this senior from Frisco, Texas, is the most versatile player on what should be a very good team. He returns kicks. He catches passes. He's a tailback, and that's the takeaway here: A 100% Nwangwu means fortification to a running back position that just might, probably is, the finest array of talent on the team. It means one of the Big 12's top kick returners is about to start his final season at full health. It means the Cyclones have options. "Kene is the healthiest he's been in his career," Campbell said. "The strongest, biggest and most powerful that he's looked." He was a second-team all-Big 12 choice in 2018. He enters his senior season with a kickoff return average of 26.3 yards, third in school history. - Des Moines Register
